Is there an official name of the pads you add to the tank for gripping with the knees?

I rode a VFR with black leather/foamy ones - who makes them?

Honda supplied knee grips with the ST1300. They could probably be modified to fit the VFR.

I have the techspec on my 03 and I really like them. They make a pre-cut 3 piece set for most all bikes. I think this is the one mod, besides new tires, that actually helps me ride better.

Here's mine with Stompgrips -- I've used these grips for 40K plus miles, all weather, no issue. Controlling your ride with your lower body smooths the bar inputs tremendously. Key is clean surface and careful application. I use alcohol to clean and then apply slowly inch by inch with aid of a hair dryer (I don't live in Phoenix. . ..). Other tank grip options include technics or some clearer type application. Good luck.
