Does the VFR have throttle bodies that need to be synched like an inline four and if so does that make the engine smoother? I never hear it discussed much.

The starter valve sync does pretty much the same as the carb sync on older bikes.
Is this something that needs to be done on a regular basis to keep the engine smooth?
Yes. I'm not sure why or how they get out of sync, but I have performed 2 syncs on my VFR, and it was noticeably smoother each time.
