Going, Going..... Gone

I just traded my 2005 VFR on a 2009 BMW F 800 GS - GPS and Hard Case equipped. I had a long long ride back from T-Mac with lots of time to think.

My VFR has been good to me and it was everything I expected it to be and more. A while back I traded my Honda 919 when I had very limited options for luggage. Factory hard bags were just what I was looking for and it might sound stupid, but I bought my VFR because of the great hard side cases. The build quality was there and the bike had been name the BEST several years in a row. So I got the VFR.

I've been happy with the modifications and the new Roadsmart tyres and EBC brake pads were well worth the trouble. Remote alarm. Nice seat. Lots of goodies.

The bike is not me. I didn't like the "exposure" that came with the high speeds and the ridiculous handling. After running the dragon as few times I was done. Didn't get my knee down or anything, but everything else scraped a little. So I'm taking the needle out of my arm while I'm still alive and I'm going to travel slow enough to enjoy the sights. I'd like to get off the beaten track. So it's lots of dirt roads for me.

Thanks for everything guys. I'll lurk around for a while. But it's not the same any more.

Certainly a change from your last couple bikes. I stopped at the local BMW dealer Sat. morning. I like the F800GS, but it's too tall for me, plus it's not the style of bike I'd usually go for.

But they did have a couple new '09 K1300S models on the floor! :wub:
But at $18k per... :(

........just kidding, of course....
I agree with you somethimes that we fall too much for the "red mist" and forget to "enjoy the scenery" as much as we should, but try not to go as far as installing a stereo and gimballed drink holder on your new BImmer! Us ST/Sport bikers have a reputation to maintain afterall! :rolleyes:
Enjoy your new ride and please feel welcome to come back to the VFR fold if you decide to change "sceneries" once again.

There's nothing wrong with wanting something a little different. What's important is that you're still riding.

I once helped a guy in Exton buy an F650GS. He kept it a couple years before trading it in on an R1200GS. He let me ride the latter once and, although it's not really my type of bike, I still liked it.

Hey Seb - I'll be up for the a ride in the Fall - is it too soon to register? I'll be riding at 6/10ths and not 9/10ths , but I will get there. So take it for a ride... I was quite surprised at the whole package. Not quite SuperMoto but the bike has some pick up down low. Short shift every corner and the low ends pulls hard.

Hey Ed - Atlanta is just an afternoon ride away and I'm sure I'll be back at TMac next year. I'm not sure the ADV guys know how to throw a party like that!

OK - Photos will follow and a comprehensive ride report. So far 600 miles in two days.

FOR SALE - Canyon Dancer version one AND version two. No reasonable offer refused. Will deliver in person anywhere in North America ( OK I might ship UPS). I also have a BRAND NEW pair of high end Alpinstars MotoGP gloves NEVER worn. Watch for the post - going cheap.

Yeah I would be very interested in the extended ride report as I came very close to getting an F800S a couple of weeks back. I was just afraid that I would not like the engine as much as the VFR over the long term.

Brian, I fully understand your choices. Do stay around though. I was at the BMW dealer last week and was really liking the GS but my short 30 inch inseam legs didn't! We can talk some at the Catskill ride. I would like to get your impressions on the differing experiences between the two rides. :+1:

Seriously, that is one beautiful bike! The most eye-opening experience at TMac was the variety of motorcycles there. All riders were welcomed and in nearly every other riding group I have been in, this kinda of mixture would not have worked. Stick around and show us your bike with plenty of pictures. Good luck, JD

Sweet bike. Those F800 look like fun rides. As for the ADV guys throwing a party... I know nothing about a party at TWO every year... nothing at all. A couple of friends from Florida ride D/S and i've hung out at some of the gatherings. They do throw a great party.

Errrr was that an actual beer can inthe exhaust...

I have been looking at BMW's but the horrror of not having a dealer anywhere close, and the horrid final drive stories I have read... Makes me like my trusty VFR even more :biggrin:

I am a card carring member of the BMW car O'haulic club... :491: yesser.. double digit fleet on hand....
