Noisy 02

Ok I know this is hard to do on the interent but on my friends 02 he has a rattle coming from the engine area it sounds metal to metal and starts at around 5000 rpm. there is nothing before then but it is loud when it starts. We though it might be valve train related. but we don't know for sure. It is rpm dependent but not in exactly proportional?????

Any Ideas????

sounds like a cam chain thats loose, do a search on cam chain tensioners here plenty of topics on that.

+1. One of the only things that tend to go wrong with V4 engines.

that what I told him but I needed a second, third,etc opinons

Most likely the CCT. If it is the CCT, it's no problem to continue to ride it. It's more of a nuisance than anything, but should eventually be replaced.

Mine is rattling a bit on the right side at 30,000 miles. May wait until the second valve clearance check to replace it.

Replacing its a crap shoot, that you dont end up with the same issue only a couple thousand later, like me. Hell of a lot of work for nothing.

I got alot of flak, when I mentioned simple 10w40 EXXON superflow car oil fixed my issue over 25,000 miles ago. I did go back to another oil for test purposes and the tentioner noise came at about 1000 mile later. After that it was clear

10w40 exxon superflow, not a peep on the front cct running it

The front tentioner, is near vertical on the vfr, its hard for oil to get up in there, there are also some other oils, people say they've had no cct noise.

Give it a shot before shelling out $200 on a temporary fix, that will come back

Now what I'm reading is that the CCT makes noise at idle not under load. But his doesn't make any noise at all until past 5,000 rpms. Does that still sound like the CCT. I'll tell him about the oil it's worth a try anyway. I know he's been running 10w40 honda oil since it was new

The only common noise issue on VFR is the front CCT, The cct can make noise at 5000 rpm and enough that you'll feel the vibration from it.

My CCTs don't make any noise at 5K rpm, possibly because the opportunity for oscillation is much reduced.
