R1 Exhaust Installed!

I had a midpipe bent and welded to install my R1 cans. It came out pretty good. I think it looks better than the stock exhaust, and is only slightly louder. With a very long road trip approaching, I couldn't do it with the open exhaust I've been running. Cost for the midpipe was $100. The cans were free from a friend.

I'll get better pics up soon.

I didn't do the race baffle mod. I don't know what that is, can you explain?

I used the original mounting tabs from the R1 cans without modification.

Very cool, I would like to try this mod, but would most likely cut off 3-4 " from the total length. This would make them slightly louder, but still extremely quite IMO. :blush:

The GSXR boys are all pissed at us for stealing their mirrors and now the R1 boys will be equally miffed when they can't find any stock mufflers on eBay. :laugh:
I am still leaning towards the Ducati 1098 Zard exhaust if I am going to go this route. :wub:

I like! 3" shorter would be perfect! Do you happen to know how much the stock R1 cans weigh? Gotta be less than the VFR's for sure.

I've been waiting to see pictures of this mod. It was one of the first mods I thought about having Seb do for me but we were unsure about how the mounting tabs would line up. It's cool that you were willing to give this mod a try. While the R1 cans look better than the stockers, I, too, would cut 3"-4" off of them.

Definitely post more pics when you've got the chance.

Yep, I made the titanium sleeves for Bailey's cans, and I could weld those up for you if you cut them and sent them here. I could probably cut them for you too, if you gave me enough clear info on what you wanted.

Here's the race baffles I was talking about, basically turns those stock cans into slip ons, while keeping the factory look/fit, and DOT/factory print on the outside of the can. I think I linked these in your last thread?

And what year R1 were your mufflers from Alien?

They should be pretty quiet, being OEM mufflers?

Really? Your link included a link to a YouTube video. It sounded pretty loud to me...but then you can never really judge a video based on the mic quality.

Oh that! Yeah, those inserts equate to having put a set of slip ons on the R1, so they should be louder! Shouldn't be as loud on the VFR, less displacement + the V4 roar instead of the higher pitched I4 sting.

Dunno on the work, would be different re-doing stockers, with all the internal baffling to consider. Would be easier to hollow them out, cut/weld, cut the race inserts, then assemble... It would take a few hours, maybe $100?

Sounds reasonable to me. Let me investigate more into these pipes and I will PM you for availability of your time (yes...I read up on all those projects you are doing). ;)

If you parked my bike next to a vfr with stock pipes, it would be hard to tell them apart by sound alone.

I already miss the sound of the open pipes, and I'm sure I'll run them again. But for now it is nice to have some peace and quiet. Like I said, I had this put together so when I take long road trips, I will be more comfortable, and will draw less leo attention while far from home.

The cans came off a 2008 R1.

And good to know on the sound issue. I am trying to find a happy compromise between letting the V4 be heard but tastefully so. :fing02:

Well Alien...thanks to your inspiration I have just purchased a set of 07-08 R1 mufflers. I plan to get them sent to Seb to have them cut down a wee bit here in the next couple of weeks once I get a mid pipe setup. :fing02:

And I am still awaiting pics of the rear shot to hold me over until I can get mine assembled. ;)
