I have been looking to "upgrade" from my homebrew voltmeter to a Datel meter. I already have the meter (someone bought it and then backed out), and I like them. Mine has been fine, except it isn't waterproof and sometimes it goes bonkers in the rain...not a problem just an annoyance.
As I look at the Datel meter, it is twice as deep as my meter, so it won't fit in that nifty side panel that is oh so perfect. Searching this site returned very little in the way of mounting locations...so where have you put yours?
Options so far:
Top triple tree, left side. Saw a picture of this on another VFR site.
Inside the mirror....this is a tough one but kinda cool...this was referenced on the ST forum I think, found on a VFR originally.
I want it somewhere easily visible, but where it won't stick out like a sore thumb.
I have been looking at getting one but haven't figured out the logistics just yet myself. Having recently removed all my fairings I have been contemplating putting it on the dash panel near the bottom but need to measure it out.

It won't fit in the dash panel anywhere that I have been able to find yet, not without gauge modification at least. I THINK it could fit in JUST the right spot on the left or right pod panel, but it is too close for comfortably cutting that panel only to be wrong...
Here is mine...as well as a few notes about the installation.
As you can see there is a gap between the left meter panel and the trim piece that goes around the gauges. This is because I mounted the voltmeter just a smidge too far to the right--inside/behind the meter panel the voltmeter housing slightly contacts the headlight assembly. I reduced most of the interference by using my dremel to grind away some of the voltmeter housing. FYI...I still have a little contact but think it's okay, and the voltmeter housing is fairly thick and also encapsulated so I didn't compromise it's resistance to water. Anyway, I think it would have fit perfectly had I mounted it 1/8" of an inch or so to the left.
The voltmeter comes with a rectangle metal backing piece that is supposed hold it in place, but I didn't use it because to me it seemed a little loose and I figured it would just get worse over time. It's tough to tell in this picture, but the meter has a small front bezel, so if you cut the rectangle carefully and make the hole just big enough, it will sit flush with the panel. And rather than use the metal backing piece, I instead ran a generous bead of 3-minute epoxy along the edge of the meter where it comes thru the inside the panel.
Hmm, I will have to pull off the left panel again and check it, I assumed it had the same issues the right side seems to. Good idea about shortening the meter, that might be doable as well.
