I noticed one low beam bulb on my '04 is out. The shop manual recommends removing both the upper and lower fairing to access and swap out the bulb. Is there a way to change the bulb without removing all the body plastic?

It's no problem to do do it without taking of the plastics, as long as you have good lighting and nimble fingers...
go ahead and replace both low beams, as the other normally blows soon after like a week
but you just turn the handle bars and get right in there , no tools needed. theres a wire bracket that is a gate, its kinda of a press fit latch. sqeeze the sides of the plug, dont pull hard it should unplug very easy.
using some armorall on the large rubber gromet makes it very easy to get back on and seated

Before you go through the trouble of removing the bulb make sure that you don't have a loose connection. My left low beam was out and I went ahead and ordered a new bulb without checking the connections. After wiggling the wiring on the back of the bulb the light came back on and has been fine for the last 4 months. At least now I have a spare bulb in case the light really does burn out.

You can also see the bulb through the hlight lens - check to see if the filament is seperated before you remove. I had a loose connector at one time too. Problem was it was loose for so long it fried the contacts. I ended up having to replace the connector end to fix it, so pay close attention to this. The bulb was ok that time. Definitely replace both bulbs if it does have one out, otherwise you'll be constantly replacing bulbs as others have mentioned....
I have fat hands and I can get them out by turning the bars too. Kind of a PITA, but it can be done.
