Fuel Tank Compatibility

I dropped my girl at the track last fall and have been piecing it back together since. There is a pretty good dent in the gas tank and I just took it in to get inspected. The guys at the shop told me they can't pass it because there is a crease in the gas tank and it is starting to rust. Boy was I pissed. I was REALLY hoping I didn't have to replace the tank.

The bike is a white '06 and would love to replace with same tank but can't spend too much. I'm just starting my search so any help would be appreciated.

What are my options? Can I use a 5th Gen? If it must be a 6th Gen, will any tank from '02 on work?

Any pitfalls I should keep my eyes open for, like pumps and gauges or the like?

PM'd ya, I have a spare 06 white tank. Small dent, I'll send pics later today.

edit - yes, any 6th gen tank will work, the colors are the only difference. Not sure if the 5th gen uses the same fuel pump or not, gas caps will interchange between the two, not sure on the mounting bolt pattern/location.

2002 on will fit, 5th gen will not.

Check inside for rust. Use your own fuel pump assembly or make sure to at least blow their fuel filter out if you use a new one.
