Top Speed Per Gear?

Sorry if this is already posted somewhere, but I couldn't seem to find it.

I was wondering what the top speed for each gear was on a 6th gen?

Howdy,I am sorry but I dont have that information to give to you,however speed in each gear
would be dependent on the gear ratio of the bike. Alot of guys either increase the rear sprocket size
or reduce the pinion or front sprocket a tooth. This is so the bike accelerates a little faster
but the tradeoff is a reduction of top speed. You could actually calculate the speed in each gear yourself.
I am not familiar with the calculations but if you know the gear ratios of first thru sixth and the final drive ratio
and the top RPM that you plan on using you can figure it out yourself. eddie

With a 180/55/17 rear tire

And gear ratios of
1 2.846
2 2.062
3 1.578
4 1.291
5 1.111
6 0.965

and reduction of (Primary/Final) 1.939/2.687


We have the following speeds at 11500RPM:
1st gear: 57.21mph
2nd gear:78.96mph
3rd gear: 103.18mph
4th gear: 126.12mph
5th gear: 146.56mph
6th gear: 168.73mph

If you like to play around with gear ratios, you can go to Gearingcommander.com. You can put different rations and see the difference from stock. It will also give you speed in each gear.

Action

I'm not sure why this matters. If your looking at the speedo and flogging the bike at the same time you are paying too much attention to the speedo.

When the little needle on the tach gets into the red you should probably shift to the next gear.

I only know that 4th gear on my 6th gen. tops out at an indicated 130mph at redline. I did it Saturday just out of boredom..... :ph34r: :rolleyes: :wheel:

You bring up a good point.... I went riding Sunday, and I'm usually spending an ungoody amount of time watching my gages. So yesterday I did a dis-engaged ride (with only a few glances on the straights to keep the speed in range(LEO) of the speed limit). But I was doing a lot better on my turns by keeping a 4 to 8 sec. gaze down the road, instead of breaking it up with glances at the instruments. A world of difference....... Just look/sound/feel......... Thx for confirming......

This gets me in trouble because I don't stare at the speedo constantly, I'd rather know what's going on in the real world around me vs. the blank eye of a radar gun that may be aimed at me. Riding per the conditions isn't that interesting to revenue collectors for the state though so, now and then, I end up handing over cash. But I agree, going through corners with little to no glancing at the gauges and especially the speedometer, seems to help everything go smoother.

IMHO,
If ya ring the guts out of it in any gear higher than 3rd, you had best be looking where ya wanta go, or there ain't no tellin' where you'll end up.
