Just recently during a long distance trip with near 250km of straight road and very less traffic, a friend of mine(Fazer 1000) and I (Vfr800 vtec) decide to travel a little faster then our usual speed which is around 150km/h. As I pass the vtec opening rpm and beyond I notice the temperature begins to climb up from 98�C onwards,as our speed reaches 180km/hr the temperature hit a high of 110�C. But shouldn't the temperature be lower instead of higher when travel faster.
The air temperature is around 32�C (hot)
Beside with k&n filter no other mod is done to the my 2002 model bike
Has anyone here ever experience this before ? Is this normal ?

I'd say it isnt normal and that your thermostat may not be fully opening.
The thermostats on VFRs is a known weakness, although I have only known them to stick open, anything is possible.
Kelvin, Your bike has a lean air fuel mixture from the factory,then you add a k&n air filter which makes it run even leaner,then running at 111 mph,that makes for a good clip anywhere.With that combination I think your near the ragged edge. So what dogman said is valid but in concert with the cooling system check,I think you should add a Power Commander, program it to give you the proper a/f ratio and run that road again,I bet you will see a difference.Also when running at say 60mph what kind of temp. do you see? eddie
Few years back I was on the east coast when an accident happened just in front of me closing the highway no one was hurt but the road was blocked, once the LEOs got there I got talking to one as they where waiting for wrecker to come clear the mess and this very nice LEO let me walk the bike pass the mess of parts and head down the highway. A 35km stretch of wide open 4 lane slab. I ran up around 215km/h for about 15km of road and temps never really changed from the normal 85�c I see on the slab. Was about 28�c out that day.
On hot days my 02 runs between 180-200 F at highway speeds. Was there any incline to the road you were on? The VFR's altimeter...er I mean temp gauge always gets hotter the longer you are on an incline. And if you are running the engine beyond the VTEC engagement point then it also means you are running above 7k rpms (for the 02) which will of course cause an increase in temperature because you are running it harder. I wouldn't worry about it and try running lower rpms next time. ;)

thanks but another friend did not had the problem with the same mod I had thats what worry me,
so maybe I really should install a pc
travel at 60mph the temp is around 90 to 95 with air temp at 30�C.
however travelling at air-temp 28�C it reads 86�C

Hi Kelvin, Since I comprend in fahrenheit I did the conversions and your temperature at 60mph is satisfactory. So I am pretty sure your thermostat is ok,but one never knows. I would certainly
check your cooling system for contamination,but going back to your 60mph speed I would say your cooling system is doing its job. Never hurts to flush the system and refill with 50/50
anti freeze and distilled water. I bet you would really see a difference with a properly programed PC. eddie

Are you saying your bike normally runs at 98�C at legal highway speeds? Mine hovers around the 78� to 82�, like everyone I did a few top speed runs (none of which lasted more than a minute at WOT), temperature doesn't change at all. I once had a stuck thermostat (open), temperature would drop much too low at highway speeds, I got that fixed by running half a bottle of Water-wetter for 10 days before flushing the system with premixed Honda coolant, definitely worth a try before digging into the throttle body to replace a potentially stuck t-stat.
The highest temperature I ever saw on the dashboard was 107�C, the fan quickly brings it down below 100�. But I wouldn't worry too much, 110� isn't dangerous, I believe (someone please confirm) that the temperature indicator will flash (or go solid red) at 120�, anything below that must be perfectly safe, especially for short periods of time.
My prob. is something similar. My '02 ran 185ish at highway speed. My new to me '04 sits at 215 degrees on the highway and actually starts to cool down when I come off the highway. So my T-stat is either not opening all the way, cuz I know it's opening some as both radiators are hot! hot!!, or its blocked partly. So I am gonna flush the system as it has been sitting more than running for the last two years, and add back in some 50/50 and see what happens. If that doesn't fix it, I guess I will check the t-stat.

Mine is the same, 78-82�C when running 110km/h on the highway.. Never seen anything over 108�c before, and to get that I was stuck on the 401 in traffic for an hour when it was 33+�C
