Catless Header W/out Pciii Possible?

I have a set of '98 catless headers sitting in my shed right now...they've been there waiting for installation for three years. I figured I shouldn't install them without installing a PCIII at the same time. But, I'm getting curious. What would happen if I installed the headers and didn't fiddle with the fueling? Bike is an '02, semi-gutted stock exhaust and K&N airfilter.

I am thinking it would cause the bike to run too lean.

You really should use a PCIII with the catless headers.

Tinyminds had a good map for this......might be a good place to start if you don't want to do it on a dyno.

I'm sure others have done it w/o a PCIII, but you would think it can only Lean out and already lean stock Map. I would suggest you at least look for someone selling their high pressure fuel reguator, they were like $100 new and I've seen them for $50-60 here used. It would rich'en the entire range for you.
If you do buy a new PC in the future, be sure to get the PCV instead of the PCIII as it would allow you to add the self mapping feature whenever you wanted and cost basically the same. :cool:

Problem solved, and now you don't have to shell out the money for a PCIII.

Thanks for the reply y'all. I'll hold on to the headers until I can save up some cash for the PCIII.

I bought a used TFI box on ebay for $25 (described as possibly damaged but it wasn't). Not plug and play (original units) nor can you "load maps" (it's a manual device) but it will do what you want/need.
