Holding Our Helmet

Folks,

After a nice long ride to my favorite bike shop, with a few bucks to spend, I stopped and parked in the lot. Beside me was FZ 600 and Bandit s 1200. Both bikes had their helmets securely attached to the bike.

I typically carry my helmet with me, but it would be nice to secure my helmet to my ride.

So the question is where do you guys stow the melon protection device? Pics would be very helpful.

Hook mine on the hook under the seat, when its cool here, otherwise it goes with me so I'm not tossin on a lid thats 180 degrees :biggrin:

I get the impression that 02's don't have a helmet hook and lock under that rear seat. The fifth gen bikes have the same lock/seat release operated with
the ignition key.

Helmet Lock

Yea... There's a hook under the seat to attach to the D-ring on your helmet. Something to think about is to get a cable, thin(little finger size or less with a inline combo on it) from a bicycle shop. Long enough to stick though your jacket sleeve as well. Then you can lock both without messing with the seat....

I usually hang mine on the base of the right mirror, not the best place though!

My Nolan has a propriatary wratchet system and clasp thats makes it easy to snap around my mirror, my hard bag rack, everything except the locking helmet lock on my 5th gen!

My Nolan always goes in the nook between the bags and the solo seat. Hasnt fallen off in te 18 months Ive been doing this. If I am going away from the bike, I use the aforementioned ratchet bickle system an loop it through the handle of one of my bags. I know that isnt totaly secure, but it looks and acts as if it is locked on and 999 out of 1000 helmet thiefs will go on to another bike.

Also, with a flip-up like my Nolan, an open helmet fits perfectly between the clip-on and rests on the top triple. It sounds strange, but it is really secure there.

Yeah, the D-ring strap on many helmets isn't long enough to use the OEM provided under seat hook on the early 6th gens. I have seen those t-shaped metal extenders that slip through the D-ring and might be useful in this application. Not sure where to get those; perhaps someone on the board can post a linky.

I would take a picture of my install, but the wife's got the camera out of town.

I've hung mine on the right mirror, but it's not my favorite thing to do, plus of course it'd be easy to steal. Instead my preferred method is to lock it either thru the triple tree or the right passenger peg with a small cable and brass lock. It's always in my backpack.

I usually hang mine from the right side passenger peg. Scratches up the helmet sometimes, and not secure.

If I want to secure it, I'll lock it in the saddlebag. The OEM bags will take most helmets.

After riding a bike that did not have a helmet lock for part of the 3 years I have owned it I thought the helmet lock on my 07n VFR was great. Popping the seat seems to take all of a second and adding another second to put it back on brings me up to about 6 seconds total.

You guys are spoiled. :biggrin:

I carry mine with my arm through the visor hole - like a purse. I've had too many things stolen over the years.. If I am somewhere I know is secure I just sit it on the ground.

That's exactly what I do, but of course I don't carry it around like a purse (I hope).

Oh well of course it doesn't look like a purse when YOU do it.. :laugh:

Mine either goes with me, or stays in the hard luggage. The seat hooks on the 6th gen work fine, but they're a pain to use.

It works fine if you like scratching the paint on your rear cowl as the helmet bangs up against it.

You lost 4 seconds! I just can't take that kind of inefficiency, so I leave mine strapped to the helmet lock all the time, then I tuck my flip-flops in it while I play beach volleyball or whatever it is I am doing dressed in a tank top and short shorts.

Another vote for "in the luggage", one more reason my Givi top case is rarely off my bike. I can fit my helmet and jacket in there without a lot of struggle.

Really the only time I take that case off is when I know I'll have a passenger with and we're just running around, because it's easier to get on and off without the case on the bike (I think, never tried it mounted), life without a top case is noticeably more difficult.

Yeah, but the VFR looks SO-o-o-o much better without the luggage cases on it and with the pillion cover. I put my cases on for trips, and take them off for all other times. A PITA, but what the hey!

I put mine on the ground underneath the shifter close to the fairing. If anyone wants to steal a stinky helmet - be my guest. I don't think there's much of a black-market value on used motorcycle helmets ;)

Someone told me you can find them at flea markets, and they're not new. Stolen maybe?

I put mine in one of the hard cases or just carry it with me if I leave the cases home. At work I just bring it inside. I didn't know there was a "helmet lock tab" under the seat. I have a couple of those "T" lock thingies so now maybe I can use them. Learn something new every day. :idea3:

Only if you like the idea of scratching your paint...

I have never scratched my paint using the under seat hooks. The bottom of my helmet has a soft collar around it. Are you talking about while you ride?

I just carry mine in with me. I have the Axio tail bag on my seat and it's a bit of a pain to get the seat re-latched due to the thickness of the straps so I just forget my bike has a helmet lock.

My collar doesn't go all the way to the edge, so the edges could scratch. NO, I would never trust that for while riding!

I have tried a few different models but they all were difficult to use with the factory hardbags, the helmet guardian worked best for me and is easy to use with luggage and 2 helmets, no fumbling with lock or key.

Should not hang helmet on mirrors, inside the helmet is polystyrene which compresses in the event of an accident, it can and will compress hanging on the mirror. FYI
