Ok,

I have been off this board for a while now after I sold by '96 VFR with an F4i front end to my buddy. A decision that I came to regret right away.

I have been riding a 2006 CBR1000RR and I enjoy the bike, but I am really just looking to have a great "Streetbike".

I have not been very tuned into all the sixth generation VFR's and I am looking for some feedback.

I have an opertunity to trade my bike out for one of two bikes (so far).

One is a 2005 (Silver) VFR800 w/ ABS and 2800 miles. It is absolutly showroom clean and completly stock. I have never seen a motorcycle as clean as this one!

The other is a 2006 (White - love the color!) VRF800 non-ABS. it has 5500 miles and is also very clean - but not showroom clean - it gets ridden - but it could be pristine with very little effort. It has Heli bars and the rear fender has been chopped a little - but all stock otherwise.

Which is the better bike? Is there anything I sould look for? I read a lot of mixed opinions on the VTEC thing and don't quite know what to make of it.

Or is this a thing where you pick the VFR that is the color ya want that is in the best condition?

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks!

Hey Brett,

The 05 w/ABS is a big plus IMO, but the 06 is the first year for the lower vtec transtion point(6400 vs 7000 rpm) for suposidly smoother action, but I couldn't tell a difference between my 02 and 06.
I would test ride each and go from there!

Let us know w/pics!

Brett, just my opinion but I would opt for showroom and ABS. Color is nice but ABS makes it for me - I regret not spending the extra 1k for ABS on mine for the difference it would have made in payments.

Thanks for the fast reply!

You guys make a good point about the ABS. I was wondering if there have been any problems with the reliability on the ABS. Seems like just more stuff to fail.

So what I am hearing is that there is no general reason to stay away from the 2005. He has the service records and it looks like the recall for the wiring harness was already done. Does that actually correct the problem?

I really don't mind the Silver at all - I think it was a good color as well. Both bikes look real nice and I need to really consider both.

Any other feedback is welcome.

I'll let ya know what I am going to do.

Thanks!

Brett.

If you don't get the ABS and you ever dump the '06 you'll kick yourself.

No issues with ABS, not that no one has ever had a problem, but there sure Not know for problems!

I woud jump om the 05, but again I would arrange a test ride of both. If they won't let you with your CBR1000 sitting there then shop somewhere else.

I've had both (an '05 without ABS & '06 with ABS) my current VFR. I'd definitely go with the '05 With ABS. My '05 was a great bike but the ABS has saved me several times... The only reason I got rid of her was it was totaled by my insurance co. So I replaced her with my '06 (with ABS) I won't ever ride another bike without ABS again! (except in the Dirt...) Good luck!

I'd go for the '05 w/ABS. The difference in mileage is a non-issue, since VFRs will run forever. I can't remember hearing about any problems with Honda's ABS, or at least no big issues. Insurance will likely be a little cheaper with the 1-year older bike, and the ABS might get you a small discount, too. I wanted a VFR w/ABS when I bought mine, but settled for a perfect low-miles non-ABS model bought from the original owner instead. Haven't regretted it yet, but I still sometimes wish I'd held out for one w/ABS.

VTEC being a problem is a bunch of nonsense IMO. I love my VTEC bike. The change in the VTEC transition point in '06 was supposed to be an improvement, but my '04's transition was never a problem, especially once I hit 10k on the odometer. And since I installed a DynoJet Power Commander III and oxygen sensor eliminators last year, my '04's transition is butter-smooth.

If the wiring harness recall has been performed you should have no problems, tho Hondas are not usually known for perfect electrics. But other electrical issues are usually fairly minor, given time to diagnose and fix them. And this forum is invaluable source for help with anything to do with VFRs. And for suggesting what mods to spend your money on! ;)

Decided to go for the stock '05 VFR800 with the ABS. 2800 miles and the cleanest bike I have seen. So far, I am very happy with it and it's much more comfortable to ride that the 1000RR!

I really would like to go with an Ohlins and the F4i front end like I did on my '96 VFR. The ABS and the linked brakes add some complications. Maybe I will just upgrade the internals on the forks - I do like the brakes the way they are.

One thing is for sure, I am glad to be back on a great street bike!

What a beauty! Congrats on your new VFR!! :)

The 1st VFR I ever saw (after I started riding anyway) was a silver '05 on a dealer's showroom floor. It was love at first sight, and tho RED is my favorite color (and the color of my VFR), I still dig that silver. :fing02:

Now, let the mods begin! ;)
