My '02 VFR800 has 39,850mi. When I dumped it back in Dec '05, it damaged the tach, so it doesn't work anymore. I found a guage cluster on eBay claiming to have 40k mi on it.
When I plugged it in last night, it turned out that that cluster has 31k mi instead of the claimed 40k.
So my question is: is there anyway to adjust the mileage to match whats actually on the bike?

wow, thats pricey shipping!
Anybody know if I can do this myself?
Maybe a better question would be, does anybody know how the speedo/odo works so that I can replicate it and adjust the mileage?

Remember the scene from
Ferris Bueller's Day Off? Replace Ferrari with Viffer... Pop it up in the center stand, leave it in gear, and let 'er rip!
Normally, you pick up a form from the motor vehicle branch to deal with odometer error.

I'd thought of that, but I think I'll pass this time.
What about swaping the Tach from the new gauges with your broken one? Or is it really broken?

That had crossed my mind, and its still an option. Just haven't looked at the clusters close enough to see if its possible.
The tach on my original one looks fine, but at idle, it reads about 2200RPM and goes DOWN when revving. Stopping at the pin at the bottom.
Plugging in the new cluster, that tach works just fine so I assume its the tach itself and nothing wrong with the rest of the system.
If I have time this evening, I'll pull both clusters apart and see what I can figure out.
While i'm in there, I'm going to see if I can't dim that darn hi-beam light!
