Greetings all. I apologize if this is in the wrong section. I am fairly new and still learning my way around.
I have come up with a list of Mods that it appears are in high demand after reading alot of threads in these forums. However, I do have some questions regarding them.
1. The "Flapper" and "Snorkle" mod. I clicked on the picture link and it seems the pic for the air filter area of the hoses we are supposed to remove is missing. Can anyone provide this pic please?
2. Exhaust. I am going to assume this is a beaten topic, but any preference for what would be best? I like shiney, so the carbon exhaust i will prefer not to do. Two brothers? Suggestions welcome.
3. The Fuel Pressure Regulator replacement mod. I have seen a DIY thread and a comment on putting on an adjustable one. Which one is the prefered method? And anyone got any additional information in regards to how the Adjustable one enhaneces performance?
4. The Power Commander. How many of you are using the LCD unit? Is it needed? I am guessing that I only need to order the commander and set it up then it's done?
A few questions to consider before you plunge into mods.
1 - What kind of riding do you do?
2 - Do you have a problem now that you would like to fix with a mod?
3 - What is your budget?
If you are planning to do any kind of spirited riding and money is not much of an issue, then, I'd suggest to begin modding the suspension. this is where you will see the most benefit by far.
If you're broke (like me) and you just want to spend some quality garage time with your new ride, you can do the PAIR, flapper, de-snorkel, de-EVAP, FPR, etc... mods.
Power commander is another pricey option which works best when you install an aftermarket exhaust. Not cheap and I would only recommend it if you really do have a problem that needs to be remedied.

Well, currently I own three bikes. One I will have sold by the weekend, my Marauder. I bought the VFR because I wanted a street bike and the paint scheme sold me. (Im retired military and one solid patriot) I won't be doing any cross country trips with this bike sorry to say. Most of my riding with this bike so far has been short trips and heading out to tracks and stuff. I don't race but like the option of going fast if I want to. The bike only has 200 miles on it so no problems yet. I only bought the bike for 8 grand as the guy had it in the showroom for 2 years and couldn't sell it. Bought it brand new like 2 weeks ago. My budget is high. Got about 4 grand to play with at the moment. I figure if I am going to put more than 4 grand in it I could have bought a Hayabusa and had it painted red white and blue lol.
You mentioned a PAIR mod? Can you explain that one a tad further? Also, won't deEVAP kind of set a code or something like in automobiles or cause driveability concerns if the ECM commands it on? Forgive the noobness in my questions but I am new to the streetbike world. My riding up to this piont has been on my 97 marauder cruising and my dirt bikes having fun.
Basically what I am trying to achieve with my 07 is keep the stock look, (Love the Red Whte Blue) would LOVE a more aggressive sound, and get some more power to my bike for kicks and giggles. The only appearance mod I plan on doing is take the rear pegs off.
Just ride the damn thing. I agree with Rice that suspension upgrades/tuning will give you better return than anything. Spend your money on rider training, gas and tires. Honda has engineered a pretty damn good bike that even in stock form is hard to push to the limit on the street.
I always recommend putting some miles on a stock bike before doing mods. Having said that, however, the most common mods are aftermarket seat (usually Sargent), bar risers, exhaust cans, K&N or other aftermarket air filter, Power Commander III and oxygen sensor eliminators, fender eliminator, aftermarket windshield, matching OEM hard luggage (made by Givi), frame sliders and aftermarket hand levers (usually Pazzo).
Being that your bike is an '07 and should have a smoother VTEC transition than the '02-'05 bikes, you may not really need the PC and O2 sensor eliminators. If you feel like your bike is running lean, the PC, etc. is the way to go.
The PAIR and flapper mods might be fine but again, maybe not necessary. I'm not familiar with the FRP mod, sorry.
As for aftermarket exhausts, check out Staintune cans. They are definitely shiny and have a nice deep, throaty sound. They are very popular and can even be found used sometimes, on this forum and on ebay.
BTW, of the mods I listed above, my '04 has a Sargent seat, PCIII and O2 eliminators, , K&N, Pazzo levers, R&G frame sliders and matching hard bags. My next mods are suspension, front and rear.
I say ride it for a couple thousand miles then decide if you want to mod it. Sounds like you want a different sound regardless, so you could do that; hold off on other mods and decide later. You may find you're happy with it like it is.
At least the BMC is suppose to offer more flow because of it's larger element size. The K&N was made with the smaller element to flow the same as the stock filter. K&N did this on purpose so that it could be used without any changes to the fuel mapping. Thats why most PC maps say "stock or aftermarket filter" Really all you gain is reuse, at the cost of extra dirt. The extra dirt over time is going to lower power, IMO.
I just bought an 07' too, in June of 09. I love it! A luxury crotch rocket that's sort of rare. There's a bike night by me (Quacker Steak - Valley View, OH) that gets 1k-2k bikes, and there will be maybe 5-10 VFR's in the whole crowd, which is surprising to me since they've made them for so long. Anyway, VFR's always gets a little extra stare time from walkers by because of their look.
So here's what I've done to mine so far.
1. fender eliminator, a must have!!
2. removed the passenger pegs (the Wife's got her own SV650SF) open that rear wheel up!
3. removed the passenger handles and put the block off covers in (clean and streamline).
4. added HID lights 10k. with slim digital ballast. (xerayusa.com) BTW i recommend them I was sent a bad ballast, returned it and the shipped the replacement the same day they received the return, they were also very easy going on the phone. a lot of times buying inline can turn into a nightmare especially if there's a problem, good customer service is worth it's weight in gold.
5. Sargent seat. (looks nice, great quality, but I didn't notice a comfort change, I'm overall disappointed with the money spent)
6. K&N, I do it on my cars and bikes just because I trust the name and it changes the exhaust note.
The things I'm going to do aren't going to make it a race bike. I've accepted that it will never take a 600R (or my wife's sv650sf for that matter) no matter what I do. but I can keep up by rolling on the throttle before everyone else, and the VTEC boost will always be a rush that they don't get to experience, even if they're already going faster when it kicks in, it feels like a turbo boost, like the bike's saying "OK, it's business time let me turn on my second engine" the whole dynamic of the bike changes.
tune the suspension to my 185lb body (anyone who's 185lbs with setting suggestions please speak up I'm clueless right now)
get some better tires (when the OEM ones wear down or when I get the rims chromed)
cup holder (LOL, not really)
GSXR mirror mod. if there's another production run of the brackets (I already bought the mirrors) or I'll just have to model my own and get them CNC'd (ugg work and effort)
Learn the Bike better, it's free (minus gas) and will add to the bike's performance with me on it, which is the only performance that really matters.

No performance mods like PC and the Flapper / Snorkle deal?
These are NOT performance mods. I would recommend not modding simply because others have. These mods are to fix problems that you don't know if you have yet. Get some seat time, ride it around a few thousand more miles and then decide what you want to do.
Here are the mods that do affect performance:
Suspension (handling)
Aftermarket sprockets with different ratios (accelleration)
New/gutted exhaust flows slightly better, but with Cat still in place not much of a difference. May or may not require PCIII (or even better, PCV- it's the same price and allows future upgrades). Aftermarket pipes are lighter.
catless headers -- expensive or rare. Definitely requires new fuel mapping.
What is your goal in modding? Mine was to make my bike more comfortable, safer, and look better. Maybe eventually if I want a faster bike I'll do more than just the partial gut on my exhaust. But if it ain't broke, why fix it until it is?
Just the same, I'd recommend: gutting exhaust, throttle lock, heated grips, fender eliminator, and if you want speed, get a different front sprocket with less teeth.
Wow, alot of nice opinions. Glad to see many different ones to boot. Guess that is what makes this forum so great!
I have come to the conclusion that I am just going to remove the rear pegs for now and let 'er eat. I like the idea of clockin' some miles on it and seeing what's what. Guess I kind of thought of that from the get go, but figured it couldn't hurt to hook it up a tad since I had the coin already on hand.
Oh well.. am printing this thread out though for the future modathon that will no doubt happen!

Thanks to all for your input.
I have the same bike as you, and have done a few slight mods, mainly cosmetic, I suggest you look at he Leo Vince pipes, anyway, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Thanks in advance for all your help.
Make sure you get the wireless option on the power commander; it sends ECU info to your Blackberry/iPod so that you can monitor your ratios in real time while riding at the track or in traffic. Also, the carbon fibre version of the power commander save an ounce, but if you mount the thing in the oil pan, you'll feel the weight difference immediately.
I kid. There was a time that I was upset that I was being passed by guys on ratbikes even though my bike was adorned with Staintunes, a PCIII, and an 02 sensor workaround. I used to blame it on the weight of my Corbin saddle, but now I realize that I was too concerned about trashing all those expensive mods in a crash.
The staintunes look good and sound nice and are lighter. Whatever. The PCIII is fun to play with, 'cuz you can hook your laptop up to your bike with the garage door open and impress the fourteen year-old kid across the street ("Yep, got a race comin' up this week. Motogp. Stoner's out. I may get the call, what with a red bike and all.") Looking back on it, the one modification that I should have done was suspension work.
And a torocharger. And maybe a hugger. And one of those bug thingies.
This guy....don't ever follow him but he's got a great list started for ya'.
He's spot on about the suspension. Mine is NOT done yet but I've ridden those that are and it's a night and day difference....best money spent next to a set of grippy, fun tires.....'course they would feel even better with new boingers. This winter.
Seat upgrade is a worhty purchase as is a K&N filter. Shane's right ...last one you'll buy.
Enjoy it and learn to love your vtec.

Staintune exhaust(polished stainless steel)
Aftermarket rear shock sprung for your weight
Respring the front forks for your weight
Get good tires
Use the rest for gas!
