I purchased a new 2007 Honda VFR800 2 weeks ago that had been sitting on a showroom floor for probably about 2 years. Well, the bike runs ok when it's at operating temperature however, it can be a real pain to start first thing before a ride. When cold started it will take several cranks and then it fires up and only runs at 700-800 rpm and really rough. You CANNOT give it gas to pick it up for the first minute as this will only kill it. After a few minutes it will finally reach 1000, but will not reach 1200 (idle speed) until you've been out riding and it's really hot.
Under warranty this past week the wax unit was replaced and this has not changed a thing. It has not effected the cold start problem and it runs no differently anywhere else that I can detect. I almost think it's some kind of electrical component that is supposed to idle it up (automatic choke?) that's out, but I'm no mechanic.
Ideas? It's driving me crazy!

BUmp up your idle speed to 1300. THe little dial on the right side of your bike is the adjuster. Try that and see if it helps.

I actually have already played with the idle speed. I have idle set at 1200-1300 currenty while it's hot and still have the problem.
It baffles me because every motorcycle I have ever had has cold started and immediately fast idled at around 2000rpm to warm itself up then slowly comes down to proper idle. This is the only bike that refuses to do that and it makes no sense to me.
If your dealership did the wax unit - could they have left some vacuum hoses unhooked?
I'm curious as to why they did your wax unit already?

That's not right at all. I'm guessing they replaced the wax unit to try and fix this? My guess is that they didn't replace it correctly...
my bike never idles fast when it warms up.i would say it idles around 1100 all the time.

i would deffinetely like to get to the bottom of this one. for as long as i can remember my 07 has always idled low when first started for the day (around 750 rpms) and then slowly raised up to about 11 or 12 hundred rpms as it gets hot. i never really noticed this as a problem until borrowing a friends 06 yzf1. being that this is the first FI bike ive owned i didnt know that they were supposed to high idle like cars till riding the yamaha.
now im not really sure if this is the way my bikes always been or if its just a result of all the modifications on it...
i looked in to this a lot but the best answer that i could come up with was that i needed to adjust the wax unit, and being that yours was actually replaced i have no idea. i also heard that you need to bump up the idle a few hundred rpms after ditching the pair valves(which i did), but im assuming that yours is stock...
maybe its an 07 thing? something needs to be recalled?
I can tell you without hestitation that your new bike should cold start immediately and idle fine all the time. Yes there is a cold start unit that is CPU controlled to advance the idle cams. My guess is that is not working. The CPU will also enrich the mixture and that may also be the problem.
Your dealer sucks if they can't fix this. I'd contact Honda USA or wherever you are and get this straightened out.
Your dealer should replace the computer controller to see if that helps. Are they saying they can't fix it or that it's normal? Time to get serious with the dealer.
I have a 2007 bought new in Sept. 08. It was out of the crate new when I got it. It starts immediately from cold and goes right to 1100 - 1200 RPM idle. Never a change ever when cold started or when fully warm. Post your location up. That will help members here refer you to a dealer nearby that actually has a service shop and not just a bunch of "parts changers" out back. I hope you get it resolved as my VFR is the best ever to ride from cold. FI works exceptionally well at all temps. Keep us posted on how it gets fixed. BTW, have you posted up a picture of your bike yet? What color is it? Maybe mine works like it does because it is RWB and your issue is related to the color of your bike? :blush: :laugh: I once had a Harley that ran like crap because it was green. I rebuilt the engine and painted the bike red and then it ran great! See? Color related. :ohmy:

personally i don't really mind it, because it encourages me to be easy on the bike and let it fully warm up before riding her hard... i just don't like the fact that something is off or broken... if someone could just tell me, "its because you ditched your evap canister, or pair valves, or the o2 eliminators", id be fine with it and just except it.
