Almost Wrecked, But Why Did The Bike Shut Down?

Riding on a NC mountain road (Double Island for those in the area) I hit a trail of oil in the middle of a right hander. The back end kicked way out, but I saved it. Then the engine shut down and wouldn't start for about 30 seconds. Any ideas what caused this?

Was your sidestep steep enough for the bank angle sensor to trip? Glad you saved it! I believe the bank angle sensor is reset once you key off - then key on again.

It may have been steep enough, I was almost a full lean and it kicked waaay out. I got very lucky. When it wouldn't start, I did turn the key off before it started again.

Yea, tip sensor. If it stepped way out then caught and nearly high sided, the fast deceleration could trigger the sensor.

Could have been the bank sensor. I'm not aware of anything else that would do that.

I had the same thing happened to me last year. My rear stepped out and then regained traction in a steep turn. That caused a motha' of a tank slapper which in turn shut down the engine. I saved it (not sure how) and was rolling in neutral while trying to restart the engine, but it wouldn't budge. I had to stop, turn the key off and then on to get rolling again.

I did the exact thing a few years ago! Would have kept riding, and try to keep looking cool about it, but mine also was shut down and needed to be keyed off first.

I had some mud on my tires because I ride on my little trail around my house to tuck the VFR into garage. Anyway, friends say why dont you clean muddy tires off?,,,,,I say (like an idiot) I never clean my bikes, lol .....Would you believe first right hand corner my rear starts passing the front..it was thrilling, fun...I chuckled as bike didnt hit the ground..was a superslide but ride it out I did...damn VFR shuts off..why? was a fun (check yer shorts) ride....bike was off , not me...it shut off on its own, so same thing happened to me, Doug

You can still look cool, just key off, then back on while still rolling. As long as you're still in gear, engine will restart. :fing02:

Glad you saved it Andrew!! Wonder what causes the tip sensor to engage some times but not others? Weird!!
