How Low Have You Gone?

I thought about this the other day while filling up, then forgot about it (ADD), but Wingnut reminded me...

How low has your tank been before filling up?

I usually push things, not wanting to stop for gas any more than I have to, and usually get a little more than 5 gal of gas at each fill-up.

The other day, I knew I was pretty low. When entering my info, I got 5.547 gal. That's cutting it pretty close IMO.

I wondered if anyone else has gotten into the vapors?

Not into the vapors, Mac, but I don't usually let it get that low. (Better safe than sorry in my book.) I don't put the bike on the centerstand to gas up, so I'm not competely filling it up. However, IIRC the most I've put in is 5.1 gallons US.

I'm curious if anyone here has ever run a 6th gen. out of fuel. Any special tricks needed to get it started after refueling? :unsure:

No tricks for me. Kicked right off after refill.

I have, and there are not. I've even changed gas lines which involves spilling a bit of fuel out of the lines and it fired right up after only a few more cranks.

I've tried to see how much I can get in there (is it really a 5.8 gallon tank?) and never gotten more than 5.4 or so. The times I ran out of fuel I was short on cash but I should've filled them up then.

I would "think" that we'd just have to turn the key on, and give the pump time to prime that dime(of gas).

I ran out once in the middle of rt 50 Colo. back in 76 ..... and I've gotten down to where the flasher comes on 2 or 3 times lately, but was in areas I knew I could get to a station....

I've ran mine dry twice. Fillups were at 5.624 and 5.638 gallons (I fill it on the bike, so it's level and up to the neck). No issues restarting.

I've been told that it's bad for the fuel pump when you run too low (or out) of fuel, so I try not to go that far.

If 5.6XX is the high, I'm pretty close. Probably only a matter of time before I hit the wall and have to walk/call someone. I only let it get really low when I'm near stations. If I'm traveling I'll fill up a safer point.

I usually fill up while on the bike too so it's level.

Not good to run the pump dry and have to 're-prime' all the time. But occasionally shouldn't be a problem.

I personally don't think running the tank low should be an issue. I've heard/read arguements pro and con on this in many different engines. Haven't seen any hard data to back up either side.

I never get gas until the gauge starts flashing. The most I've ever gotten on a fill up is 4.8 gallons.

Prime and start.

I must be weird... I try to never let the tank get below 1/4. It's good to know that there shouldn't be any problems if I ever encountered a situation where it would it empty tho! Thanks for the knowledge! :biggrin:

On my first 6gen, I ran it dry because I wanted to remove the tank and paint it. After I got it very low, I ran it around the block (and around and around and around and around....) so I wouldn't have to push it very far when it finally died. Anyway, to my surprise and dismay, it still had several cups worth of gas in it when I removed the fuel pump.

I've ran it out before, only because I normally go off of miles per tank. I didn't put into account a strong head wind. 200miles per tank that day, normally I don't have a problem getting 220 miles with gas to spare.

Anyway it took 5.8 gallons if you top it off all the way. I didn't have any problems starting it after that.

Twice for me also. First time I had to push it 50 yrds or so.....lucky me. Second time it ran out while parked in the garage. Im not sure how much fuel it held when dry. Im sure I'll run it out again and then I'll see if I holds 5.8

I try not to get that low. Remember, if there is any crap in your tank, it usually is at the bottom. When the only gas you have is at the bottom, that junk is more concentrated in solution and can leave your tank and cause more issues with the filter etc...........

For us older riders, it is not a problem.We need to pee at every gas station anyway-might as well top it off.

5.3 gallon as I recall
