Pictures Of The Carnage ...

So my denial has started to pass this weekend and a few parts showed up on my doorstep so it was time to take a look at the damage in my accident a few weeks bac. if you missed the original post then click here Original post

The body is good, my back is all healed up from the road rash where my jacket rode up as I slid along the ground. My ankle however isnt there yet, it appears I did more than just a good twist. I will start trying a little running in a week (after my business trip this week) and hopefully it will strengthen back up again. I have had a strange lingering pain along the outside of the ankle up the leg so I may have bruised a bone or something. Moral of the story here .. wear gear ! I had Oxtar boots on, the ones that look like a high top sneaker, and likely they saved me a lot more pain and damage however a harder full boot would have been even better I think so they are on the list for next season along with Kevlar jeans !

The bike on the other hand is not so good ... here is the damage ...

Left side is pretty rough ...

Nose cone is in rough shape too, the tab on for the interior cosmetic cover behind the mirror broke off on the left side. ...

Right side has cracked and broken some tabs, it seems that the left side impact popped the right side out.

The tail cone cracked too, although no scratches so it seemed to crack from the stress somehow like the right side, and the grab handle took a bump ...

The new right side fairing was $25 and has 2 small scratches but no cracks so for the price it will save a ton of body work if I repaint the plastics ...

And what worries me most ...

With the controls straghtened out the front wheel is tweaked to the left. Hopefully, as someone suggested, its just tweaked and loosening the forks will allow it to fall back into position, I will try and give that a shot tomorow.

Now I am in a debate about finding a replacement left fairing and nose cone and painting the fairings or going with a Chinese replica kit. I am talking with a couple manufacturers about their kits but still looking for a supplier with tank covers for the VFR. The season is done here, or at least it will be next week so I am less anxious about her sitting idle in the garage and I have started stripping down the broken parts this afternoon. As long as the forks arent screwed I think its fixable but if the forks are toast then I might change plans and talk with the insurance company ... hopefully I dont have to go there.

I was just getting ready to get a pair of boots like you describe. I think I will RETHINK that idea. Glad to see you are getting better.

Glad you didn't hurt yourself seriously!!! Don't worry about the bike, those scratches should just buff out :biggrin:

As for Boots, Yes racing boots will save your ankles most of the time but they transfer the impact to your knee and hip. you can still walk with a twisted knee, but a broken ankle puts a whole new twist on things..

I wear the Oxtar TiEvo boots (discontinued) and they saved my Ankle with zero damage, My knee and hip didnt fair so well. They didnt like getting twisted around backwards..

my left fairing looks pretty much like yours and the nose fairing isn't quite as bad. i have just been riding it, but i have started thinking about the Hong Kong stuff too. Where did you get a $25 fairing? I tried ebay, but with shipping, mine was 3x that price with more scratches....the nose piece is just too rich for my blood when i can get the entire hong kong kit for the same prices...

If you'd just fix up the bike, TC, you could ride faster than just a "crawl". It's all about looking good. That's why why I'm so slow... :laugh:

Did some street surfing, didja? Im glad you are healing. You brought something up that is probably good for another thread: how our jackets respond to a get off (riding up while sliding). I think our jackets should fit like a tailored shirt personally.... like I said, another thread. Your bike is probably gonna be fine after you throw some dead presidents at it. Glad it was mostly plastic and the tweak on the forks! Get well!

@Infidel - The boots I had probably saved me a bunch more serious damage. My left fot got crushed between the bike and the road and actually punched a small hole through the boot on the inside. I will absolutely not ride without gear in the future, not that I have in the past either, this reinforces why we wear gear.

@turtlecreek - the fairing was a lucky grab on Ebay, right color and everything ! It has a small scratch along the top and along the bottom so it needs work but WAAAY less work than the damaged one on the bike.

@Auspa�ol - thanks, I am pretty ok with painting the bike to fix the cosmetics, its the thought of a new front end that makes me shiver a little. I cant do my own work so the price on that jumps considerably.

@DarkKnight - yup, I had a nice shiny new Joe Rocket jacket that is full coverage and a bunch of it zips away to become a great mesh summer jacket. Its in good shape still, where I fell to my back the black color is more of a grey but that might wash off when I get a chance to throw it into the washer. I guess I just found another reason to wear a 3/4 length jacket !

Boots: I have a pair of those Oxtar sneaker/boots, too. I think they're designed more for casual riders and stunters than for serious street use. I wore them for a short time before I bought better boots, but for short trips they're better than just sneakers, so I still wear them once in awhile.
