Staintune exhaust is melting boot, cooking right leg

This is my first post, so please help me in case this has already been answered elsewhere. I have an '03 VFR with about 17k on it. I bought it used with only a few thousand miles on it, and it came w/ the Power Commander and Staintune Exhaust installed. I love the bike, but the exhaust cooks my right leg. It has melted the rubber on the heel of my boot and is wearing out my aerostich suit on the inside right ankle as well.

Aside from wrapping it in exhaust tape, what else can I do? Please help!

Does the staintune mid-pipe (the one going up to the mufflers) have an additional shield/plate attached to it in the area of your boot or is it just the pipe?

Is your fuel map too lean?? This could be the culprit. Your exhaust should not be getting that hot. I have a 2003, Staintune exhaust and a PCIII, and my exhaust never gets as hot as you describe.

Got to the downloads section here and download the Cozye map for your Power Commander. See if that helps.

I wonder if your bike has the heat shield installed over the rear header pipes? (not the one that goes to the cans, the 2 that come off the engine)

If that was removed, that would let out a LOT of heat.

if you have a thermal thermometer you could measure the temps and compare your results.

I had a similar problem with the Staintune on my 4th Gen. I solved it with a quick trip to my local engineering shop and they whipped one of these up for me. It attached onto a couple of cut-out tabs on the back with a couple of hose clams. Simple and solves the problem.

You might be running really lean. My Sidi's haven't melted yet.

The plastic heel cup on my Sidis would melt to the exhaust pipe before I got this. I have never noticed any heat, but I wear leathers.

Going to echo the lean condition. I'd check that first, then if it's still not cooling it down, those heat shields don't look bad!
