As lovely as I think my fire engine red '02 VFR is, ... I'm feeling nostalgic. I remember making trips to the local Honda dealership in the mid 80's just to sit on the first gen Interceptors.
So... how much you guys think a factory-quality paint job to RWB scheme would cost? I'm guessing I'd start at my local Honda dealership for a ballpark...

The 07 Honda factory paint (and stickers) are phenomenal, the metallic is just right and is found equal on all colors. You could buy all the plastics for a ton of money from your local Honda dealer, or you could have a local body shop do it, but to get the same quality would cost either way.
I only know of one guy who was able to buy a complete set of used RWB plastics, and he was a big, stupid, poophead and wrecked his bike at T-mac last year...:ph34r:...

You could just buy a set of 07 RWB skins from Mother Honda $$$$$$
OR just get the color codes and a quality set of photos and have the local custom painted create a copy. I am restoring an 85 VF1000R and had all my piece done for around $1K...However, the painter told me he would never do it again because of all the work to align the sections of bodywork for three colors. He felt it should have cost double.
But the costs don't stop there... In addition, you would need to get new VFR/Honda decals and get the old one off the fairing to be painted or buy another donor set. So you have to do some prep work to the fairing and the tank just to begin. If you have the time/skills/equipment, you can do all the prep and have it professionally painted and probably get away for about $2K.

VFRDylan brings up a good point. Getting a painter who's good enough to make sure the lines all line up correctly across the various body panels would be important.
You know, I didn't even think of 'just' getting a set of plastics instead of painting mine... right now, there's a right side front fairing RWB for $60 on ebay. And then just having a painter paint the tank...

probably cheaper to sel your 2002 for $4500 or so, and pay 7K for a new RWB....new bike AND the color you want. Plus then you don't have to explain the color change to your DMV, insurance, etc.
I was sorely tempted to get a blue set for my bike, but I ended up getting a good deal on the tank and rear fairing from members here, so I bought the rest from Mason City Honda. Not cheap but much cheaper than my local place (plus insurance paid for it).

If it'll cost $2k for a full good paintjob, then a 2007 is 'only' $500 more. PLUS it may have less miles than mine, but I got lots of nice extras on mine...
Are you looking for a factory RWB, or a representative/similar paint job? 'Similar' could be a bunch cheaper. Also, I found the factory RWB to be too dark aft of the tank unless the seat cowl was fitted, in which case it was tasty.

I agree that $2k sounds about right. If you decide to go with a custom RWB paint job, why don't you go with something that sets your bike apart from the '07? Below are a couple possibilities. Flip through some magazines or look online for more ideas. Oh, and don't forget to insure your bike for aftermarket accessories. Even though a custom paint job isn't an accessory, it's usually covered.
That first one is my favorite. I'd like to get close to the 80's theme/style, that's why I liked the 25th Anniv paint job. But, that's true, I don't have to have it EXACT! :fing02:
And the Chinese plastic route isn't a bad one, either... $579 for a new full set... something to think about. :comp13:

And I just saw that the RWB bike does have a black frame and engine doodads, but I'm not looking to make it a STRICT '07 copy.
Maybe a slightly customized paint scheme would be better.

I'm with Tightwad. I'd find a new leftover RWB at a motivated dealer and buy at a deep discount. Or, I'd consider buying used from a motivated seller. The paint job route and aftermarket plastics won't get you the black frame or clear lenses. . .. Plus, the Chinese plastics don't give you the anniversary tank. And of course, you still have the different wheels and cockpit issue....
I went a different route than you. I took the '07 RWB Mother Honda bought me and turned it into an '07 Anniversary Asphalt (Ryan got the RWB plastics and tank ....):
A thought to consider,.... What about blue and white, over the stock red, then a finite metallic clear over the whole thing? Could be the least expensive option, with assured quality.
