Rubber bumpers on gas tank

I'm refering to parts 24 and 30 in the link below. I've only got one. I removed it when I got the bike.

they keep the tank from rocking side to side and rubbing the frame. no big deal if they are gone.

If they are gone, the tank will eventually rub deep gouge marks into the frame and that's probably a big deal to some.

I'd worry that the seam line on the tank would eventually be compromised by rubbing on the frame. Honda put the bumpers there for a reason.

thats the least of your worries..
i had a 86, with no bumper since 86 up till 2008.. and it barely marked the frame let alone dent the seam.. and that was with NO mounting nut for 3 years..driving it everyday..

The bumpers are cheap, and I only need one. Guess I'll go ahead and replace them.

You could always find some black radiator hose and cut a short chunk, slit it lengthwise and call it a day.

Cheap and efficient. You could do the whole tank around just to be safe... :rolleyes:

using a rubber just to keep on the safe side is always a good idea :biggrin:

I second this motion. Save your money for gas or beer. :)

You could always source something similar from an auto parts store by searching the "Help" aisle that sells a bunch of random parts. I'm sure there is something in there that would work.

Or, like others have said, just wittle something up yourself out of a block of rubber from an old tire or other rubber bit from your junk drawer/magic box of wonders you've been building up over the years full of old parts and ideas that never panned out. We've all got some of those don't we?

On my '98 I lost one of mine and went without it for a long time. No big deal. They don't sit in there very tightly and as others have said, they probably don't do a whole lot. I think Honda put them in there as a cosmetic safety feature so the tank wouldn't rub on the frame and make it look "ugly."

The one I lost I eventually found. It was just sitting down on the engine for a few oil changes. When I pulled the radiator off to do the SuperHawk fanblad swap recently, I found it just sitting there hanging out and chillin. I wouldn't have been surprised if it was laying back with a margarita or some other drink with an umbrella in it just enjoying the ride. I put it back in where it belongs on the tank seam. It might fall out again. I don't think it's a big deal either way.

I just lifted the tank to see if I've had any damage running without the rubbers. The bike has 10k miles on it and there are no marks on the tank or frame. I'm inclined to leave 'em out.

To avoid your rubbers falling off I suggest gluing them on permanently with some black silicone cement.

Where does your knee rest when braking and during hard cornering?
That tank does not just sit there.
