Luggage rack

I am looking to add a luggage rack to my 06 VFR and I am debating between the OEM and a GIVI. I was wondering if anyone had personal use and thoughts on either of these two produsts?

I'm going to pick up the OEM one this year, just because I've been told the GIVI system will not work with the OEM side bags which I have. Which is a pain because GIVI has a top box that maches the color of my 07 where the OEM top box is just black :angry:

Yeah I have heard that too. Seems whichever system you buy into, that is the one you have. I am just curious to pros/cons of either. The Honda ones look nice but are a little more expensive.

Thanks for the info on the Givi's not working with the OEM side cases. I just put my side cases on and am thinking about going with a luggage rack and top case next winter. So now I know I have to stick with OEM.

Thats odd since Givi manufactures the OEM boxes, must be made to Honda spec? I think one option is just to get the Givi top box and a Givi plate, use the Givi plate instead of the Honda top plate - a set of 3 Givi matching barrel locks, I dont know if the OEM bags use the same type of Givi locks.

Yes, you can pop the Givi lock barrels into the Honda bags. I'd do what Slammer said and make the Givi plate fit on the Honda rack.

Or, if you don't need the passenger space, you can get a solo rack from KanadianKen and use whatever top box you want. :fing02:

:offtopic: Side note... I just recently bought a Honda rack and top box from a member here, to go with my oem side cases for weekend trips with my wife. Wow, is that rack heavy!! :blink:

I heard the same thing that Givi made the rack for Honda. I believe they just change the top plate. I also read someone had trouble afixing a different plate but maybe he just wasn't doing it right. Givi also makes a luggageg rack that can be used with Honda OEM side cases. I think it operates just like the Honda one, attaching to the grab rail bolts. I saw it and now I can't remember what site I was on! Any how, just some thoughts.

Just some advice on what I used. I went with an Alu-rack Top Mounting Plate and a rather large Givi E-52. My setup is very unique in that I sit more upright then most because of the handlebar conversion I used, so my wide shoulders block the wind from hitting the case (hence getting away with the larger case). However on a factory setup i've been told a V-46 is probably the largest you'd want to go. But as a word of advice, the Alu-rack moves the topcase further inward towards you to reduce the handling feel of having a box on back hanging so far out - which a givi mounting kit would otherwise do on the VFR. Also the suspension system on the Alu-rack seems a little loose for my taste - it's made to rock a bit, which is understandable, but you may need to finagle with it some.

...oh yeah, the alu-rack works in tandem with the factory bags that I have on my '07. One thing I also would say is that the construction of the rack has mounting points off the passenger grab handles (above them - see pictures) and that's it, so it routes straight backward. There are times I've been interested in making support bars off the factory luggage mounting bars below to reduce the slight flex they have - but there doesn't seem to be any benefit to it unless you have someone on back because large bumps seem to hammer the case into their backs - my wife has had the breathe knocked out of her on occasion from it - she's only 5'2" and 103 lbs, but the case does get to moving a good 2 inches or so forward to aft from the hard suspension on heavy hits...just a word of advice if you have a passenger - this is pretty much unavoidable.

And if anyone's wondering, that's an antislip cover from triboseat (find him on eBay) over a corbin seat. Worth it's weight in gold - haven't gotten my nuts mashed into the tank on hard stops ever since (from wife sliding into my back).
