This year's PNW VFRD meet is in Nelson, BC - The Kootenay Hootenanny 2

Meet Dates
August 19, 20, 21 - 2011 (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)

Costs

The total cost per person will work out to $42.00. That will cover the shirt, printing, prizes and the first round of beer when we meet on Friday night. :beer: The shirts are a bit more money, but, they are unique again for this meet and being a poly/cotton blended shirt it'll last you for years.

Please send payment as soon as you can so I don't have this order sitting on my credit card for too long. If you could send payment by July 15th I'd really appreciate it as I'll be away on my Alaska adventure ride.

Hotels

The New Grand Hotel - Our Homebase

New Grand Hotel - Rates

A standard room, based on double occupancy, will be $97/night (plus taxes) for August 2011. We are offering a discount to you, as you are valued guests that we look forward to having.

***You may let your members know that they now may start booking for your event, but do ask that they let up know that they are with the Honda VFR Group at the time of booking so we may extend this special rate. As you may know, the BC Senior Games are taking place at the same time, so it is important that your members call as soon as possible for reservations, or if you have an idea of how many rooms you will be needing, we can block them out now for you.***

Rooms must be reserved/booked before November 30 to hold our block of rooms (15 rooms).

Free parking in the back with a bike wash station for you neat freaks.
Pub downstairs where we'll gather on the first night

** Make sure to ask in your booking to be in a room away from the pub - less noisy**

Alternate Hotel Suggestions

• The Hume Hotel - I can highly recommend the historic Hume hotel (we'll be going down there for beer and meals - Mike's Pub)
• The Dancing Bear Inn - a small youth hostel/hotel - This place is excellent! You can split a private room for $50/night. Shared bathrooms.
• Bed and Breakfast Information - there are quite a few really great B&Bs right around the Nelson area (but you'll have to ride in to town)

"Short Ride" Route - Around the Lake including Kaslo/New Denver Run (Fun, Fun, Fun!)

Still a full day ride (400 kilometres). It includes the Kaslo to New Denver run (which is long fast sweepers), the run from Creston to Crawford Bay Ferry (70+ kilometres of twisty roads), and a nice run over one of Canada's highest passes (very scenic).

Voted for mid-week to permit taking 1 week of vacation, but still having 2 weekends for extra time before and after the meet for extended riding in BC. Regardless of the dates selected, I'll be there.

I am not going to vote for either mid-week date yet (both would be fine), but mid-week worked well at Troutdale for me. I am sure mid-week may get a little lower attendance, but I liked the mid week timing of Troutdale.

Third week should be fine, same as the other events. Weather has been good that time of year. I think mid-week events might work better for having less traffic, but other than that the weekend date will work fine and help some avoid taking too much vacation.

Voted for Aug. 5,6,7. Already commited to family RV camping Aug. 10-21. First time to the Kootenays this year - looking forward to getting back there!

Ainsworth is too small for the group that will attend the Hootenanny ~ assume you will stay in Nelson again, although you might also try Nakusp at the other end for a change of scenery. They have a hot springs there, too.

So with the feedback I've received the meet will be August 19, 20, 21, 2011.

I know some like the midweek meets but this was the most popular vote (a weekend). So….

Also having ridden in Washington and Oregon and up to Nelson on the way home each year - it's basically a long-day ride from Northern Oregon to Nelson. Two days from southern Oregon. So I don't think people will need the whole week to get there. Also in my experience there isn't too much traffic at this time of year so I don't think that'll be an issue either.

I'll keep updating the first post with details as I confirm hotels, meals, etc.

We really had a good time in 2008. If you've never been to Nelson, BC it's really a little jewel of a town and some great roads directly outside of the town.

Hope to see y'all there.

P.S. If there are any dual-sport riders with extra time on their hands before the meet that would like to join me on a ride to Inuvik in the Northwest Territories you're welcome to come along and I'd appreciate the company.

This sounds like an excellent idea! I'll start the planning now. The New Grand was an excellent hotel and as far as I know they treated us very well. Off-street parking (quasi secure) reasonable rate and pretty darn central. One comment; the local dealer was a tad miffed we were in town and he didn't know about it. Maybe hooking him in up front might just add a free lunch, a farkle or two and go to the head of the line servicing if the need should arise. Couldn't hurt to send a heads up that direction.

The Grand gave Jasonsmith the major run around for the2010 event. Kicked us out in favour of the Triumph club. I know its one of the bigger places to stay, but I would find out when the triumph guys are going to be there. not that would hold any water as to who get to stay.

Cool! I'll do what I can to join, but won't know probably until July next summer.

Yes, warning the owner of Main Jet would be wise. When I organized the unofficial one last summer, the owner of Main Jet offered 15% off any parts if I remember correctly right off the bat. Just saying, maybe he can do the same and should anyone need a tire of a combination of stator-r/r-battery, it may be worth it.

As far as accommodations are concerned, I vote for the New Grand, but if it is full by the time I am ready to book, I will look for B&Bs and hostels. There are a number in the area within walking distance, which is one of the best reason to have it in Nelson. ........... Oh, and the Nelson Brewery, did I forget to mention the brewery?!? :cheerleader:

I'll definitely contact the motorcycle dealership this time and invite him over for a beer or two. We'll see if he's interested in some level of sponsorship or can offer deals on merchandise.

About the New Grand
The home base will likely be the New Grand Hotel again.

We had 25-30 riders stay in the hotel last time and all had a good experience. The only negative one was the crappy one-man band. I'll talk to the owners about this.

For those that haven't been to Nelson, don't let this bad experience by some colour your views of Nelson, BC. It's a great spot to hang out, it's very welcoming and I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay here. I ride out from Calgary two or three times a year or stop in Nelson on my way home from summer rides. It's really a jewel of the interior of BC.

Alternatives
There are other hotels and accomodations there, so my suggestion is that if you're are unhappy with them your more than welcome to stay at the Hume or other venues - don't let it be a reason to not come to the meet. Nelson is small enough that you can walk down the street for meals and to hang out with us. I really don't think this is an issue. I'll post alternatives soon. There are some excellent B&Bs, hostels and other hotels within a stone's throw of the New Grand.

I have no axe to grind with the Grand. Just a heads up so the double booking / one group leaving issue. I had no problem with the way I was treated, they told me before I could even book a room. It sucked to find someplace else in a rush. Ainsworth was so-so.

It would take more than a bad dealing with a hotel to stop me from showing up to this event. I met some great people, and enjoyed my ride in the USA with my brother in law.

My plan is to go the USA, San Fransisco ( Alcatraz ) and hope to meet up with some of the USA riders making their way to Canada.

Count me in.

Otherwise, the RCMP have been dealing with lots of complaints about 'speeding bikes' in the area especially on the New Denver to Kaslo stretch, and I am sure it will continue next year too. BC's new excessive speeding laws call for immediate and mandatory 7 day vehicle impoundment for 40 kph and over the posted limit. Thank god I am on a KLR :biggrin:

Cut and paste from a local sportbike site specifically re: Kaslo/New Denver :

Due to local public pressure, the police have adopted the tactic of running a two car rolling speed trap along this route.......you see the the first police car and dial it down......but he has already radioed your speed back to the police car that's following behind him.........you think it's all good having met the one car and dial it back up........and then you get stopped by the second car,who now has the two speed readings on you to compare
I was dicussing with the officer,the possibility of giving this old guy a warning, when around the corner comes four sport bikes,doing the speed limit, because they had been warned,by hand signal that there was a police car on the road,.....but not two. The first rider gives the officer thumbs down for stopping bikes,the last rider in line,is a little more expressive and gives the one finger salute
Around the corner they go and you can hear them ramping up,totally unaware that they are riding into a trap My officer sprints back to his car,yelling over his shoulder "you've got your warning"
I guess the message here is that the police are changing tatics and aggressivly targetting riders on these popular roads
The key word here is "targetting",with todays penalties it might be worth the argument in traffic court,even if only for a reduced outcome,like,say keeping your bike!

It will still be fun and the beer will be cold!

OK I'm in for the 19,20,21. As far as the Grand goes, If you guys want to try again, I'm OK with that. Obviously there was more going on with that deal than I was aware of... As far as Ainsworth is concerned I offer my apologies as it was my idea. I enjoyed the hotsprings for my aching body. It was a few bucks more but I thought it was worth it. This was my first VFR ride and I had a great time on the Kootney ride please count me in on this one too! I look forward to seeing everyone again. Does the grand at least have a hot tub? Is this just a meet at Nelson or is there an organized ride?

Last time through we contacted the New Grand and asked for a better than the average bear rate and a block of rooms (I think it was 20 rooms) be held until June (??), they were most accommodating. Might have merit for 2011.

I've contacted the mgmt at the hotel. They are currently putting together a package rate.

I have stayed at the Hume and The Grand and neither has a hot tub. I have friends who have stayed at The Best Western after skiing, and it has a hot tub. Only a couple of blocks from the Grand - easy walking distance if you must have a hot tub.

There will be a meet-up at Nelson, and a variety of rides to choose from - varying in distance and speed... or none at all if you stay in the hot tub :goofy:

Time will tell. Depends on what my shifts will be at that time. Best Western sounds good to me. I don't intend on supporting the New Grand after last year. I see there has been some editing of this post from its original form. Just so there is no mistake. It was me who contacted the BBB. I fail to see what is wrong with that. That is what they are there for. The Houston Texas BBB were instrumental in convincing Greyhound to replace some golf clubs of mine they were responsible for loosing when I shipped them off and rode the bike to a golf game in Vernon a couple years back.

As far as the RCMP targeting bike, well that is life. We all know we push the speed limits. Getting caught is a risk we take. Now the stakes are higher. If you do not want to loose your bike for a few days, then drive accordingly. This should not be a surprise folks. The new regulations were well publicized. Recently I had my company car impounded for illegal parking by Vancouver. The parking zone changed five minutes before the ticket was placed on the car and the car impounded. It was costly. I had to pay cause it was not the company's fault. Who's fault was it?

I've updated the first post in the thread. I have the room rates for the hotel.

Book soon to make sure we have the rooms as there is a provincial senior games event taking place at roughly the same time. Even if you are not staying at the New Grand make sure to book before the Xmas break or you'll likely be out of luck.

If you're flying, what will you be riding? I've been thinking about riding there, but it's 1500 miles away.

Blocks of rooms must be booked by November 30th. I've booked a block of 15 rooms.

Please use the hotel's online booking system (New Grand Hotel - Bookings) or call the number provided in the first post. Rooms are being booked fast for that weekend so if you are booking a room do it soon as they will become scarce very soon. This includes the alternate hotels - I've checked with them and they are already receiving bookings for that weekend next year.

Also we can begin to confirm who will be going. Post up or send me a PM or e-mail - superfunkomatic@gmail.com

I've booked a room for this event. I have a question though, Rhonda said that superfunk booked the block for the 18th 19th and 20th going home the 21st I assume? Is that correct? Are we to meet there on the Thursday and head home on the Sunday?

I'll be there a day early. The meet is Friday (19th), Saturday (20th) and go home Sunday (21st).

I'll be going a day early to hang out in Nelson and relax.

I've booked a room for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. A friend from Montana may join me on his ST 1100.

Did I arrange to share a room with you and forgot about it? Geez I hope not. I'm not opposed to throwing a cott in the room to drive the cost down either but the third wheel gets the cott!!

I'm also not opposed to stretching the trip out one side or the other if someone or a couple of someones want to make a longer trip out of it.

No, didn't have any arrangement with me, so it's all good. What I meant --I probably wasn't clear enough--was that BCMCRider shared with V-Fore last year I think and I shared with you, and this year I'm sharing with V-Fore and BCMC is sharing with you. Simple swap. In any case, as long as everyone has a room, it's all good.
As for skiing, I haven't skied in a long time, but if I do decide to go, I'll let you know. Question is: will you be bale to keep up with me?!?   Posted Image     kidding.

I just booked my room at the New Grand.  I reserved an economy/single room for 3 nights for myself (I tend to snore, just ask didit, radar, snakeman, thumper8, tyke...   :musik20: ).  

FYI - If you booked a room using the NG's on-line reservation system and didn't get a return call or email to confirm your reservation, give the hotel a call.  I was told my Nov 6th reservation didn't get processed because their on-line system has been deleting reservation requests the last couple of weeks.  

I'll be taking the following week off  from work and I'm already planning my route to extend my travels in BC and then visit Glacier National Park.

Yep, I can vouch for you Gary, as I was right on your tail and watched you pull that somewhat unbelievable maneuver with finesse and a touch of bravado.  I though maybe you'd just ridden over the bank to pick up a roadside treasure of some sort but then when you came shooting back onto the road, I guessed it may not have been intentional.  The only thing that would have made it better is a wheelie as you hooked up on the pavement after leaving the gravel.

Hey guys, just checking in also. Got home last night after spending a couple of days in Penticton with the fam. You bet I hit those flies. the windscreen on the bike was red by the time I passed through. Had to stop in Grand Forks to clean the visor so I could see again. Just wanted to add my thanks to Mr & Mrs Superfunk for the planning, say it was great to meet some of you and put some actual faces to the screen names. Pat from Nova Scotia, thanks for helping me completely wear out my tires. My riding season is now done :(  

On a down note, I think I got nabbed by a photo radar van as I was pulling into Calgary. It went from 110 to 90 and the bugger was about 100 M inside the 90 zone. Just what I always wanted for my birthday.

Nelson this year. We have already booked out our time for Colorado meet.  (CANT MISS THE SUMMIT)

We really missed not seeing some of our favorites like (Lee, Rob, Paul, Tony2, Quesnel, OK i guess Mike as well :) ). And getting to know some of the others.

Actually, several of the assembled vifferati asked whether it is harder to keep black clean. I don't think so.  I've had other bikes in silver, red and (mostly) white and can't really say I've noticed any difference.  No issues with birds so far (touches wood desk...).  Where my car is concerned on the other hand, I'm convinced there's a squadron of seagulls and pigeons tasked with patrolling, reporting its movements when out of the garage, then strafing it when parked ...

Hey, they are Bridgstone Battleaxe BT021's. They were on the bike when I got it last year with 46837 km. The bike now has 54942 km so I only put about 8100 Km on them. When I left Nelson there was the worn/flat spot in the middle. By the time I got to Penticton there were these little horizontal crack like things just showing in the center and that is the tire from Penticton to Calgary. Anyone have ideas on a replacement that will get decent life? They seem to have worn out pretty fast. I don't think I would get them again.

One other thought - these get togethers are much more enjoyable without The Amazing McCrory  :)

Suzanne and I got an 11 am start on Sunday and came home via the ferry and the East side of Kootenay Lake, then a blast over Kootenay Pass and across the border to Metaline Falls. Fortunately, the chip sealing on Hwy 20 was already well-sealed, so no loose gravel or rock chips that I can tell. About 15 miles East of Colville, while mid-corner in a right-hand sweeper, I felt a sharp pain in my gut and when we arrived in town I stopped and confirmed a bee sting. I guess I had my Aerostich a little too open and he got sucked right down my shirt. Finally rolled into Republic at around 7:30 and got a good night's sleep. Left around 10 the next morning and zoomed over to Tonasket, then down and over to Winthrop for lunch. Fifty miles along the North Cascades Highway, the rains came, and continued all the way to Arlington, soaking my "waterproof" gloves. Suzanne, behind her big windscreen and holding on to the  heated grips of that big BMW, was in better spirits. Slabbed it down I-5 to the 7:20pm ferry and home. I'm glad we broke up the return trip into two days, and I've learned that my favorite road is the one without someone in front of me.

A few photos from the weekend. Suzannes BMW caught my wifes attention. Its the bike I can buy to park next to the VFR so she can ride in comfort.

I just got home.  Almost 2000 miles in all.  Enjoyed the Nelson meet.  On the way home I visited Glacier National Park.  Took the red bus "crown of the continent" tour of the Going-to-the-Sun road.  I later stopped by the Many Glacier section and saw my first grizzly bear crossing the road ahead of me.  Luckily no big mama grizz with this juvenile.

Our trip home was fantastic (we got back on the 24th).

We rode with Gary (V-Fore) through BC/Osoyoos/North Central Washington, then on our own through: Winthrop; across Washington to Sandpoint, ID; Glacier National Park and Waterton then across the prairies and home. Fiona's longest trip in such a short time - 2500+ kilometres in 4 days.

I did Glacier in 2008 and Winthrop a couple of years before that.  Nice country. Thanks for sharing your pics.

Hey all, I enjoyed the wekend at Nelson and meeting a great group, I especially enjoyed the company and "spirited ride" on Saturday the weather was great and the roads good.
I made it to  Indy on Friday 4PM, stopping at the honda dealer in Colorado springs to pick up some spark plugs, only 13 each as opposed to the 40 they want at the dealer home!!!! The races in Indy were great, well worth the trip, maybe next time I will not take the detour to Vancouver!
The ride throught Montana, Wyoming and Colorado was incredable every type of landscape, very good mountain roads.
I have a few extra days so will take secondary roads through New York, Vermont and New Hampshire. Any suggestion would be appriciated.
