There will be a scheduling white-board or some-such available on site for you to check on in order to schedule your rides/activities.

I'm not going to say that all we'll do is RIDE as there's a good bit of stuff to do outside in the area if the weather's nice, but let's be honest, we're all kind of bike nuts.

Friday:

Morning- Get to Harrison, AR. The Hub is on HWY 7 due south of Harrison. Check in, etc.. etc.. etc..

Afternoon- Check in and find me for your swag.

Mid-afternoon- Kickstands up at 3:30p for an afternoon ride if you're there early enough to participate and care to go after riding in. Would prefer groups to stay around 3-5 riders to facilitate ease of communication, overtaking and basically looking out for one another. If you're not very experienced in group riding, the MSFUSA website has a good bit of information on courtesies of riding in a group (as well as a few threads here on VFRD). It's worth a look. Also, take time to talk with those in your group about any signals or routes. A few volunteers for leading rides would be welcome.

6:00pm- Rally up at the Cliff House just south of Jasper on HWY 7 for some good home-cookin'! We've got reservations for 6pm as of right now. I'll pass out swag to those who have missed it earlier in the day.

Night- Hang out, laugh, chat and enjoy.

Saturday:

Morning- Would like to see rides staggered for those looking to participate starting for you early birds at around 8:00 (sun should be up by then) through 10:00.

Afternoon- For those interested, group back up at the Hub for secondary routes leaving at 1:00pm, or take a good nap.

Evening- Bathe... Please. VFRD dinner at 7:00... Would love recommendations on a local establishment we can invade that is able to house 20-30 at one time.

Night- Hang out, tell lies, chat, and enjoy.

Sunday:

Morning- Jaunts for those interested starting at around 8:00

NOON- Adios awards ceremony.

Afternoon- Shedding of bitter tears as we part ways.

I'm not going to pretend that this is even remotely well organized. It's a vacation and I'm not one to give everyone a LOCKED IN schedule when you're enjoying your time away from your every-day grind. However, this is a rough outline of what I think we should be doing. The long and short of it, you'll have to fend for yourself to a certain extent regarding meals and keeping yourself entertained. I have neither the time or desire to plan your day out for you, that just puts a lot of pressure on me and invites some people to have a degree of disappointment. If there's something you want to do, DO IT. This is simply a broad-scale guide on what I imagine everyone would be agreeable to.

There will be a white-board or something of that nature posted in a conspicuous place to help with scheduling things ON SITE.

I would politely ask that you try to make the group dinners Friday and Saturday evenings. If I'm calling places for reservations for 20+ folks, I would hate for them to staff for that many customers and then nobody shows up. From someone who's worked foodservice, it's just a courtesy... Besides, you'll be hungry.

That being said, if you've got some people you think you'd gel with quite well from previous experiences on VFRD rides, work some kind of schedule out among yourselves! There's no harm in it. Just please, be available in the evenings :tour:

I'm currently planning on kickstand UP at Pops on Rt66 Friday AM at 8:00am. Route to Harrison will go from 66 through Arcadia to the turnpike near Chandler. From the turnpike, skirt south around Tulsa (construction there is just plain stupid right now) and grab hwy 412 through to Harrison. Should take 5-6 hours with a break for lunch which will put us at the Hub around 1:30pm.

Hello guys and gals!

Due to my schedule sucking the proverbial butt and a myriad of other issues, I'll be missing out on all the fun this Summer/Early Fall with the sanctioned VFRD get-togethers.

That got me thinking.

There may be OTHER poor souls like me out there that WANT to go, just the timing's all wrong.

This is a testing of the water if you will... a way to gauge interest in hitting up the Ozarks in Late September. The temperatures should be good and the weather should be... well... it should be either sunny or rainy. I went with the Riders Association of Triumph this spring to Harrison, AR.... A place called the Hub Hotel. http://www.hubinfo.com/index.html The routes surrounding the area are absolutely fantastic. The hotel itself is... well... the floor in my room was concrete, I'll put it that way. The sheets were clean and they didn't mind a bunch of hooligans hanging around. (You know those Triumph guys.) They invite tents, have a cafe on site, and are a short ride from civilized life. Prices were 60/night for double occupancy if memory serves.

The dates I am thinking of are Sep 21 through 23... that's a Friday through Sunday. It's not a busy holiday weekend, so traffic should be decent, it's not PEAK riding season, so there shouldn't be a lot of pirates out. However, it IS the peak of Fall, so leaves on the roads may be a real concern.

If there's enough folks interested in meeting up, I'll call the Hotel and try to find a group rate next week. Currently on their calendar there are no events being hosted that weekend. If there's call for it, maybe I'll make a T-shirt or something... The main thing is to just have an excuse to meet some of you and enjoy the heck out of what I view as some of the prettiest country in the US.

I'm thinking everyone starts arriving Friday... Group or individual rides Saturday (would need some leaders to volunteer) then go our seperate ways Sunday.

Thoughts? Interested? Put it up here. :)

*note* This ride will not be restricted to ONLY VFR's. If you have friends who would like to come, feel free to invite. While it's something I'm only asking about on this site, I think we all understand that there are loads of people out there just as in love with riding as we are.

*Secondary Note* If I'm one of the people designated to lead a ride it should be said that my pace is NOT the pace of a hooligan. I am a pretty firm believer in keeping within my limits. I would classify myself as a slow to moderate pace. Naturally, you're the one that dictates your pace, and there will be rally points set up if you fall behind where we'll wait to make sure you're good to go. If you're nervous about riding the pace of a group, don't be. Safety is always the first concern. That is not to say that someone else with a desire for a more rapid pace won't be willing to lead a group. :tour:

Oh absolutely.

I was really happy this spring at some of the routes I went on with the RAT group. The roads were in great shape for the most part... the worst thing was that every time it seemed like I hit some amazing bit of pavement I had to stop to get a picture of something.

The magic number is 10! Hahahaa! Figure 10 people could split into two smaller groups easily, and there's always the singles or doubles that will want to ride their own ride with the wife or whatever.

10 may qualify for a group rate as well... I plan on calling Debbie after the holiday to check.

Here's a video I made for my old man. He went with me last spring, the first REAL ride he and I had been on. The pace was pretty slow, he's not a very confident rider.

The roads are amazing. Hope that comes across. There are just beautiful little Ozark Mountain vistas around every turn. The day I video taped was pretty overcast and the lens got a bit foggy, but you get the idea. ;)

One question comes to mind: how do the LEOs view "spirited motorcycle riding"? Images of Cops On The Dragon come to mind.

I am up for this...I like a medium to faster pace when on the VFR, and Arkansas is my favorite place to ride that is close enough to get to in one day for me. A real bed is a good thing, but I'm probably up for camping if the weather looks decent. Keep me posted! Gary, where are you?

I've been going up to AR for several years and most of the trips were at track speed. Only times I got stopped was when I was slabbing back to Texass. A few times we've met cops in the twisties and they'd just flash their lights and keep going.

I can't commit just yet but I'll keep an eye on this thread.

I've been to the Ozarks once for some great riding and the constant comments about "No Leo's" so off I went to the Pig Chasing rally of 04.

Two notes from the trip:

1- I've never seen so Many Cops!!! 5 day one, 7 day two and a Trooper pulled up to our group of 8-10 saying someone called them on a cell phone saying a gang of bikes were passing wrecklessly! :ohmy:

2- I've never had some many people try to Run me Off the road! Don't know what it was, but I've never felt so threatened by nutjob drivers.

Other than those two issues the roads were great! But for me it's twice as far (with total crap between) as the GA/TN/NC triangle and offers no better riding, so I've not returned. :ph34r:

If i ever ride to CO I will surely run the Ozarks again! :tour:

Everyone else, please check the list on the first post and advise me if I've got your name in the right spot. Once again, Debbie at the hub has rooms set aside, just call her to get your name on the list. There's a wedding and some other Honda group at the hotel that weekend, so we've got 10 rooms reserved... can bump that up if needed but we need to be pretty quick about it.

I spent 4 days in Harrison earlier this summer and the best way I can sum up our adventure would be that the roads are 80-90% as good as TN/NC with 10-15% of the traffic (bikes, cars or LEOs). We hit traffic one time and that was only because of construction on 7 past the Hub turn off. Pick up the Motorcycling Arkansas pamphlet from the hotel and check out the Peel's Ferry route. Once you take the ferry across and continue northward, break away from the planned route and stay on 125 a little longer through Missouri, it's a great run. I'd also recommend the DD and I think it's route 341, that was awesome. Mountain Home is also a great stopping point for a break, lunch, etc.

You really can't go wrong anywhere in that area, but be mindful of the critters - especially turtles!!! We saw more of those than anything else. Few deer, dogs, and the normal fare...the turtles were a trip, hah.

Ride safe, it's a great area.

I could swear I saw an Elk when I was there. Didn't see many turtles.

The ride pamphlet was really great for advice for sure, made it really easy to see some of the better routes. :)

Plenty of elk up there but rarely see them. There's no shortage of wildlife.

Deer can be plentiful in the early morning but not so much in the afternoon.

Wow! Didn't know there were bears around. Good to know! I used to bump in to those guys all the time in New Mexico when I was camping. :ohmy:

I do not own a GPS, but do not need one for any of the AR twisty bits...so I will be glad to offer route advice. The delimma for this short trip will be trying to decide which route to take on Saturday. Too many must do roads to cover!

I like to ride a SPIRITED pace through the good national forest roads. If I need to lead a group...lets ride!

Looking forward to meeting everyone and ridin some good twisty bits on the VFR.

As to why we're leaving late morning... I work nights, and there's a couple guys that have contacted me that want to ride as a group, leaving later in the morning fits most of the folks I've talked to.  Obviously it's not set in stone, and really with my new schedule leaving at 8 am would be best.  But there is the early morning traffic congestion to think about etc... I try whenever possible to let the cages slug it out without my being there.  haha!   :tour:

Nope, just been quiet.  I've got a new schedule with added responsibilities at the workplace, so haven't had much time to fritter away on the web.

Just to put the feelers out there, I'm going to have a t-shirt designed for this... simply because I need some new clothes and I get along well with motorcycle t-shirts.

Not sure what the design will be yet, likely very immature and snarky.

Anyone else interested in having one made?  Might have the local shop throw something together.

I'm thinking something completely class-less like the above maybe with a bike instead of a bomb... but still give it fins or something.... Bombing the Ozarks 2012 VFRD blah blah...

I've got a few buddies who do tattoos, so it would be a similarly themed thing like this.  Likely I'd have them knock up some kind of unique flash art.

So I'm curious...your profile says no car...what the heck are you doing in this heat???  I don't think I've been on my bikes in over two weeks and that has got to be a record!  Well, except for living in Spokane when there is snow and ice all over everything for weeks on end...

I am going to try to escape for an early Labor Day run to AR twisty goodness...

Yeah, I bought the VFR back in November after I judged my back had healed enough to start riding again.  Spent some time warming up to riding again and then accidentally sold my pickup the first of March.  I just haven't bothered to replace it.  I am in the market for an older XJ Jeep Cherokee though when winter shows its head.  Love that Jeep 4.0 I-6.

I work nights so it's not SO much like riding into a blow-dryer.  I will admit though, the armor's been sitting at home.  Getting to work soaked in sweat puts me in a bad mood.

Grocery shopping is kinda comical.  Really though, living with only a bike isn't so bad.  Been able to save some money since I can't get the fancy new flat-screen home...  Doing a landscaping project was a pain.  Mulch and garden tools don't REALLY strap down all that well.  You can strap a bicycle to the back of a VFR come to find out.

Dang Steve, you going soft on us or what?  I'm riding every day.  It actually feels good after freezing all day in the office with the hyper active A/C unit.  And I am actually cooler riding ATTGAT, the jacket and closed helmet keep the radiant heat down.  I do change to shorts and a tee as soon as I get home though.

I spent 4 days in Harrison earlier this summer and the best way I can sum up our adventure would be that the roads are 80-90% as good as TN/NC with 10-15% of the traffic (bikes, cars or LEOs).  We hit traffic one time and that was only because of construction on 7 past the Hub turn off.  Pick up the Motorcycling Arkansas pamphlet from the hotel and check out the Peel's Ferry route.  Once you take the ferry across and continue northward, break away from the planned route and stay on 125 a little longer through Missouri, it's a great run.  I'd also recommend the DD and I think it's route 341, that was awesome.  Mountain Home is also a great stopping point for a break, lunch, etc.


Agreed.  That Peel's Ferry is cool and 125 north into Missouri is like Deals Gap.  Right after you cross on the Ferry (going north) there is a small mom & pop resturant on the left.  We stopped there for lunch and it was pretty good.  Link below:

Dang Steve, you going soft on us or what?  I'm riding every day.  It actually feels good after freezing all day in the office with the hyper active A/C unit.  And I am actually cooler riding ATTGAT, the jacket and closed helmet keep the radiant heat down.  I do change to shorts and a tee as soon as I get home though.
Probably am going soft Gary!  I just need to get out earlier on the weekends.  Still not ready for the 100 mile commute home until it gets below 95 degrees.  The ride to work would be perfect tho.

Some friends and I drove Rt. 66 last night from OKC to Chandler, was eerie.  Smoke over the roads and glowing red coals of trees falling and throwing sparks that the wind immediately grabbed and carried off to wreak more havoc.  Hope we get rain soon or we're in trouble this year like 5 years ago when 1/2 the state burned.

You don't know what eerie is until you are standing in your back yard watching the flames shoot up one mile west, praying the wind will shift in the right direction. Estimated 50-60 homes lost Fri thru Sunday morning.

Was just curious about T town guys since it seems like there may be a few hooligans from up there...LOL.  I am still leaning towards an earlier departure Friday to miss the Siloam Springs/Springdale traffic and getting a good camping spot.  Hope one or two others want to leave early too.  I'm counting on "gswanson" but he is at Sum Sum and isn't a for sure yet.

Funny you mention this, I went to my cycle shop and had them order in a set of the 905's sport touring bags for me to take a look at. I didnt understand though, why is the 950 classic $40 more, for no visible difference or size increase? All I can tell is there is a water bottle holder...

And it also looks like I will be recieving a set of frog togs before the trip. Pretty stoked.

Couldn't do SS2 because they schedule a Monday - Friday ordeal and even with the new baby my wife gave me permission to go if I really wanted to.  This is only 13.5 hours from Albuquerque so if I trailer queened it on Thursday and headed back on Sunday that would give me 2 days of prime riding time in banjo land.  Ugh...soooooo tempting as I am dying for a nice ride.  I will have to see how things pan out next month as I have a family reunion the first weekend of October....

There's no registration for this event correct?  I plan on truck camping if I can pull this off so just stay upwind of me for the weekend and we will be fine.   :goofy:

Vanion2 you should come if at all possible...the roads in Arkansas are probably the most under rated in the south due to the attention the Blue Ridge and Appalachians get.  You could even park your rig at my place (Yukon is right off US66 and I-40 & just west of OKC ) and ride out with me.

No, there's no official registration.  However, I will likely make some name laminated "dog tags" for people to wear on lanyards to help with the "You're who?" thing that happens, as well as emergency contact information for a "just in case"

As far as camping goes, Debbie at the Hub Hotel is the contact to reserve a spot.  I don't think there's an up-front cost as I'm sure they keep their reservations on a series of post-it notes in the men's room or something. ;)  Just give her a call.  The "camping area" is a grassy spot near the trees on the north side of the hotel... or anywhere else you can stick a tent I'm sure.  Camping is $15.00 a night.

I'm hoping for it to be a "come as you are on whatever you've got" type of ride, just a chance to meet some of you glorious goons from VFRD and any of your non-VFR buddies you care to bring along.  The big goal is to get together with a group of good folks for a day or two of twisties and laughs.  This event is organized on the website, but not specific to it.  Friends/Family are welcome.

I don't know about everyone else, but with my current schedule for this weekend it looks like I'll be leaving Pop's 66 (Arcadia, OK) at 8:00am the 21st, arriving at the Hub around 1-2pm.

Your directions would be something like this... Take I-35 north from Denton... Take a right on old 66.  Go a mile and a half and start looking to your right.

If memory serves, it's a Army Corps of Engineers project, and it's not a bad spot to camp.  There are facilities on site.  http://www.travelok.....profile/id.259

The directions to the rally point in the morning would be like this:

Get back on eastbound Rt. 66, stop at the 40 foot soda bottle 7 miles down the road.  Start looking for bikes that are not harleys.  That's about as easy as it gets.  :)

Think the route through Tulsa will skirt south through Jenks.  Should be able to rally up on the south side somewhere that has a fuel pump without too much trouble.   :laughing6-hehe:

Think it's going to be 66 though to Chandler, then jump on the Turner Turnpike through to the southern loop around Tulsa, catch 412 through Siloam Springs and over to Harrison.

Sorry guys. My wife and I have had so much going on this summer we have missed every group ride this year. We did take off a couple of weeks ago and went down to Lawton for a weekend to ride around the wildlife refuge and grab a Meers burger. I still need to post the pics for that trip. Think I will name it the "Not so Sum Sum 2 adventure" :laugh: . Anyway, just got a chance to read through the thread and we are on the definate maybe list. I may also have a couple of other riders that would want to go. With that said, if I can get my leave approved for that weekend we will go. Summer travel is winding down and the airport is starting to slow down so I think I can pull it off and get a couple of days off. No way I can get a day off during the summer as we need every employee we have there and then some during this time of the year. My wife will have started her fall semester but she does not have Friday classes so she should not have any scheduling problems. My daughter is moving into her apartment this weekend so I will have an empty room soon, so if we make the definate list I can put up an out of town member that needs a place to stay the night before stands up Friday morning. With everything going on I have not even looked at my wife's 07 this summer and I still have a ton of mods left to finish on it that I started this spring. Finishing up building a new barn/shop for the in-laws and starting to get the tractors and equipment ready for this fall. Probably won't even look at her 07 until after we get fall wheat planted in late September so she will be on the Magna. Her fuel range is usually 95 - 110 miles. I hope that won't be an issue. If it is please let me know. Anyway, hoping to go and be able to put some faces with the names we see on here. We have met Steve and if all the other members going are like him, I know we will have a good time. BTW, my wife says it is time I get some new t-shirts..... :ph34r:

Probably won't even look at her 07 until after we get fall wheat planted in late September so she will be on the Magna. Her fuel range is usually 95 - 110 miles. I hope that won't be an issue. If it is please let me know

Personally, I like to stop every 100 miles or so regardless for a stretch and the VFR 1200 isn't all that great on mileage anyway.  I for one would love to have someone around that needs gas more than I do.   :tour:

I don't think it would be a problem at all.  Would love to have you guys come along!  Besides, we've got a few triumph riders (Friends of mine and of Adam's) that may be joining us and their fuel range will be about the same I imagine.

Thanks Yokel. We are the same way on long rides. 100 miles is a great time to stretch and get a drink. Less fatigued after a long ride. Anyway, I should know if my leave is approved this week. So, if I read the first post right, Saturday morning would be a pick of one of the six routes to ride on. Maybe someone that has ridden those routes could chime in and let me know which one would be the most scenic with a little adventure. I was thinking the Moonshine run or Jasper disaster would be good fun. However, I would have to catch up with the group at each of the checkpoints as I don't ride as aggresivley as others.

That's the idea.

I was out here in the spring and did the Moonshine Run before this storm system parked on us. It was very scenic, decent tarmac and the roads were more technical than I had initially guessed. Traffic was not even remotely an issue.

Some of the planned routes overlap.  Frankly, just about anywhere around Harrison is terrific. I was separated with some other guys in my group and after sending the "we lost you and will meet you back at the hotel" text, i received back, "Lost as hell, having the time of my life, see ya there."

The route I did with my dad was a VERY leisurely pace, 100 miles or so, took 4 hours stopping for pictures and really taking our time.

I'm currently planning on kickstand UP at Pops on Rt66 Friday AM at 8:00am.  Route to Harrison will go from 66 through Arcadia to the turnpike near Chandler.  From the turnpike, skirt south around Tulsa (construction there is just plain stupid right now) and grab hwy 412 through to Harrison.  Should take 5-6 hours with a break for lunch which will put us at the Hub around 1:30pm.

Just saw this part of the thread.  If I am going I will be trailering my VFR all the way up to the Hub.  I will have room for any excess gear on the trailer to lighten your loads a bit for the slab up there and a tool box ready for any road side repairs (hopefully not needed).  Basically I can act as a chaser free of charge.

Not yet.  I have to see how crazy the work schedule is before I can confirm.  Right now we are looking at the end of our fiscal year which translates into a bunch of projects needing to be completed before the end of September.

I'm not trying to change your mind but can't resist suggesting this route.  All good roads with some really tight corners.  No guarantees on gas from I-40 until you get to Jasper so I'd suggest topping off when you get to the interstate.

Well, it looks like the time has come for possible route talk.   I live about 2 miles from the Hub and have ridden here for many years.  The routes listed are NOT the routes I would recommend for Saturday.  I never do any of those routes the way they are laid out!  I am not trying to be difficult but just wanting the groups experience to be as good as possible.

Remember, those routes are put together in a chamber of commerce brochure.  They make sure that you travel through the towns of the sponsors...even if that means keeping you on a main highway and bybassing a great twisty road.

Again, having only one day, Saturday, makes it difficult to suggest a route.  And that does not take into consideration different riding styles, paces and duration preferences.  Possibly the best idea is to get together on Friday and put together some ideas in front of the map.

Speaking of Friday...will anyone be wanting to ride in the area on Friday afternoon?

I was thinking the same thing...I like to avoid the "recommended routes" like 7 and 23.  I tend to like 16, 14, Push Mtn Rd., etc.  Depending on how early I get away, I may game for a late afternoon jaunt.

P.S.  I didn't come by these routes all on my own...HS and some others led some great routes last fall.

Pick a scenic, twisty route that covers about 5-6 hours of ride time including lunch and photo stops and I am in (hopefully) for the Saturday ride.  Preferably light on traffic and Harleys.   :wink:

This is why my initial route over to Harrison was "shorter".

While it would be great to cruise through Talequah and up through from the I-40 side to Harrison, I would almost prefer to get TO Harrison then meet up with the guys/gals coming in from somewhere other than OKC for an afternoon jaunt on Friday.

Taking the scenic route from OK to AR isn't a bad thing... Just food for thought as far as getting to our other riders at a decent time of day.

To each their own though... I'm not about to start telling people how to spend their vacation time. :tour:

I'll be in Harrison no later than 2pm Friday and would be quite interested in a afternoon ride, preferably something that involves BBQ and home-made cobbler with ice-cream....

If a Friday ride is planned, I'm good with getting over there as early as possible and enduring the slab for the sake of speed to a greater good :tour: .  It's not like the ride around Tenkiller and up next to the Illinois River is anything compared to what is in the Ozarks...

And off topic, but is anyone game for riding the Ozarks around Devil's Den Campground over Labor Day weekend?  I'm making a dry run that weekend, camping in Devil's Den State Park.

I'll be on my XR so doing a 400 mile day won't be an option for me especially considering I'll have to do 400+ up there and back.  Consequently, I'll be glad to lead an easy Skuuter style route if any of you aren't up to a long hard day and would prefer a little sight-seeing.

Hooray. Just got my leave approved today. Please add me and VcFR to the "fer sure" list. However, at this time I am not sure how many of our +'s are going to be able to make it. BTW, BBQ sounds excellent for Friday night. Also, VcFR and myself do not mind some super slab riding as we are used to that on our commute to work every day so whatever route the group decides on to get to Harrison is ok with us.

Well getting that Friday off just got solid but not the Thursday so no playing the chaser or making the Friday afternoon ride as I had hoped.

Done and done.  My +1 or 2 are still on the fence as well... Both ride Triumphs and are having fueling issues.  Go figure.   :rolleyes:

Sounds promising!  Playing chaser is thankless pack-mule work anyway.  Not having a chaser will just make everyone else honest when they're packing. :tongue:

Traveled it this past weekend.  They now have a one lane passage so that the road is not closed.

7 south of Jasper is not really a road that I would suggest running anyway.  However, 7 between Jasper and the HUB is lots of fun!
