This is the 9th Annual T-Mac.

I have all the Motel's 60 rooms reserved for VFRD and these rooms will be held for us only until April 15th when all non-reserved rooms will be released for anyone else to rent.
Ask for the VFRD/Kevin Bailey reserved rooms.
Our rates for this event are $59/night for all rooms. Please contact the Microtel in Franklin at 888-403-1700 and reserve your room(s) with a credit card in order to hold them for our event. I would love to have the entire place just for the T-Mac, but doubt we will have that many attenders to do so. They will honor these room rates for the entire week so be sure to ask for the discount if your coming in early or staying later!
Beer is allowed at the Motel and there is a medium size indoor meeting room that we can hang out as a group, but think it's limited to 50 people.

Again this year we are using Eventbrite On-line registration for this years T-Mac.

Please add your VFRD member name to your Paypal payment note AND use your Member Name in the "Job Title" area of registration. Thx.
There is a registration fee that includes an event T-shirt and helps to cover other incidental cost of maps and such for the event.
It will ask for you shirt size, preferred Ride Group, days you plan to attend and emergency contact and info so we know what medication you might need and have someone to contact in case of any problem. On that note it's also advisable to carry emergency contact info on you for the same reason, I like the helmet info packets best myself.
Also with Ride group selection being private you might be less likely to let ego choose your group and I suggest you drop down one level to start with, then move up or down as needed through out the event.
You can now order extra T-Shirts on-line also.
Group Dinner- Again this year we will have everyone together Saturday night for a group dinner, it will be a catered meal at the motel like last years or possibly at the resturant just below the motel.
This is also a chance to hand out any awards or door prizes with everyone in attendance. Right now I have $15 meal Tickets available for purchase in registration.
Group rides
I may only have ride groups organized with Lead/Sweep teams for the Relaxed/Scenic ride groups this year and just let all Int. & Advanced riders organize their own groups. Let me know your thoughts here!
We will have group rides/routes planned for Friday & Saturday that will include both long and short versions so riders can decide just how far they what to ride. Thursday & Sunday will not have any official ride or route planned, just days to acclimate to the area and do whatever you like.
As mentioned we will have long (aprox 250 mile) and short routes (aprox 150 mile) each day and each group will have a Lead/Sweep team to guide/control/maintain a SAFE group ride .
We'll have at least 3 ride group categories, Relaxed(newer riders),Scenic(Int/slow)& Intermediate(Int/fast) groups. The idea here is Not to let Ego choose your ride group. We want everyone to have a fun and safe time while participating in this event and controlling how groups are run is the biggest factor in a successful and safe event. This is not a Competition or Race and our Lead riders will lead for the entire group, not a "your on your own" attitude.
Safety and fun will be the focus of all group rides, the idea is for everyone to make it home safely and share what a great time they had at the T-Mac. Not who's the fastest rider. Please keep the ego's at home.
- Routes will be posted sometime next spring and will include GPS and hard maps of each days ride.
- Lead/Sweep teams will be picked from volunteers I choose that have the attitude I'm looking for which is Group oriented not self and you do not need to be a star rider, super fast or live in the area to be a good team member. I'll start a different thread for that over the next few weeks and will get into more detail then.
- Group size - I hope to have enough quality Lead/sweep teams to keep group sizes small as smaller groups sizes make everything easier and safer. Preferably 6-8 riders per.
Basic Ride Groups:
Scenic: Beginner/newer riders & riders who never go over the posted limits, have little to no twisty experience and are in no hurry to get anywhere. Group stops often for pics/rest/talk.
Relaxed:(Int/slow) Experienced riders, but little twisty experience. Confident in skills except newer to Heavy Mtn Twisties. PACE is Speed limit +/- 5-10 mph. Fun, Safe & consistent PACE. Shorter Loops(150/200 mile) because heavy twisty routes cause fatigue to set in MUCH Faster than normal. Time for extra miles if desired.
Intermediate:(Int/fast) Experienced TWISTY/Mtn riders and or track day experience, confident with non-stop twisties and the endurance to handle them on longer routes(usually 300+ miles) Ride PACE avg. of 10-20 mph over.
Note on group selection:
This area is unmatched in twisties both in volume, duration and technical level compared to 90% of the rest of the country and if you don't ride in similar terrine in that other 10% of the country YOU WILL NOT BE READY FOR WHAT YOU'LL ENCOUNTER HERE !
These twisties there are endless providing little chance to rest and fatigue sets in very quickly. Fatigue multiplies the chance of crashing by 10 fold especially in this area where the turn you just screwed up is only half as hard as the one your now entering from the wrong side of the road. Even the slightest mistake is compounded by the extremely technical nature of these roads that provide little to No room for error!
Please do not take group selection lightly, your life may depend on it! I can not express that fact enough!
We place a lot of importance and responsibility in the roll of our Lead/Sweep Teams and our desire for them to focus on GROUP safety as it's a very important aspect of this events success. But No matter how dedicated out Teams are, we can not control the choices each attendee makes and the effect these have on the entire Event. Posted Image Each rider coming to this event also plays a hug roll in it's success buy choosing a proper and safe ride group for them. If you are an Intermediate rider in most of the country you will be a Relaxed level rider in this part of the country, please don't let ego pick your ride group! This is the single biggest and most important decision you will make when attending the T-Mac, it will play the biggest role in the fun and safety of everyone involved.
Please do your part and focus on the Fun factor along with Not loosing sight of the fact that this is a Memorial Ride for the first VFRD member to loose his life!

Pre-Ride Meetings
We try to have pre-ride meetings each morning before the days ride at breakfast(TBA). The days ride is covered along with maps handed out to anyone that doesn't already have one, the group is then broken down into ride groups with Lead/Sweep teams for each. If there is a planned group lunch stop it will also be discussed.

Ride area
This area has some of the best roads this country has to offer with great pavement, beautiful scenery and tons of twisties. But all of these great twisties can also be a hazard for riders who don't get to ride great twisties often and even for skilled riders who loose focus. It's a great area, but can also be hazardous.
Be careful and don't ride over your head.

Event History
For some members who have no idea what the TexasMac ride is here are some details, Texasmac was a member here who was from *you guessed it* Texas who met Baileyrock and some others for a ride into the Tennesse/North Carolina Smoky mountains to ride the famous Deals Gap. He passed away in a bizarre accident when his bike went off the road and ended up on top of him. He was the first member at VFRD to pass away - it was a shock to many of us, and to those who where with him they decided to honor him with an annual ride to the same spot of the accident, where there is a cross placed in his name. Baileyrock has taken it upon himself to organize this event for the last nine years and each year it gets bigger and better, always with safety in mind so that what happened to Texasmac doesn't happen to another member.
BTW the picture at the top of this thread is the actual Cross Raising for TexasMac Event of April, 2004 which is what the T-Mac anniversary is based on. Bruce Williams aka TexasMac was Lost Dec. 27th, 2003 riding with Baileyrock(Kevin) and Hot Rodder(Ray).
Note:
I was told that some newer riders have some worries about not being a good enough rider to attend this event and I want to dispel that fear. We will have at least one(more if needed) beginner/new rider group with a qualified (for this group) Leader who will maintain a Scenic/Relaxed pace that the entire group can easily maintain. These groups will also run shorter routes so that's there's no pressure to keep up with the entire event and also to prevent fatigue from setting in.
Every group will have both a Lead rider and a Sweeper who tags along behind their group to make sure no one gets lost or left behind and will be there (first to scene) if there's a problem.
Please PM me with any concerns or needs.
On the other side of that, there will also be some faster Paced groups for experienced riders and everything in between. We'll most likely have Scenic/Relaxed/ Int. groups.
BR. I reserved a room for two Starting on Mon 14th / Sun 20th ....... While doing so I was told that the room I requested would be a popular choice and it might be hard to get ......... So I suggested she use the ....... " 1st come, 1st served rule" ........ I think it was a eye opener for her, but got a comfirmation number now............... next move is to register with the TMAC.......

Two queen beds - one me. I'll consider room sharing. Warning:
1) I smoke; I chose a non-smoking room and I will step outside to do so.
2) I snore and can tolerate other snorers - sound sleeping has it's advantages. And I use the bathroom in the middle of the night - hey! I'm an old (62) man.
Co-ed is fine with me - privacy respected.
Note: Kay said I'd be charged the regular rates ($79 - $89) for the early week days when I first made reservations. Later I called her back, told her of the week-long rate offered to the group; she said she did not know that and changed the charges to the special rate for the whole week.

I just registered and booked a room at the Microtel arriving Thursday (17th) and leaving Sunday (20th). I have reserved a room with double queen beds. If anyone is interested in sharing a room, let me know. It would be half of $199.56 for 3 nights. Room comes with a fridge and a microwave. For those of you that don't know me (which is pretty much everybody), I'm a 48 year old professional (accountant), laid back and easy to get along with. I have no hangups or quirks that will shock you upon meeting me other than I'm addicted to motorcycles. I'm also a non-smoker.
I'll be making the horrendous trek from the Atlanta, GA area on my 4th gen and I hope to be able to make the trip (maybe 3 hours) all in one day :tongue: . If anybody would like to ride up together, let me know as well. That's about it. Looking forward to my first event.

THE CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST COULD GET US GOING AN HOUR EARLIER. NO 2 HOURS WAITING ON GRANDMA AND NO NEED TO GO TO MCDONALDS. THEY JUST BETTER STOCK UP. THIS PLACE IS THE RITZ COMPARED TO THE MOTEL.
I shot off a note to the local dealership in franklin, for sponsorship, so we can perhaps rent a tent/tables/chairs and such - if any of you have contacts with a dealership or with honda help would be appreciated.

Well I am bombing to Nashville in 3 days, leaving that Sunday from Colorado and arriving at BR's place Tuesday night and we are heading out a day early on Wed onto Franklin to spend an extra day in the area.
I remember finding this forum just after Tmac 2011, thinking oh man i just missed an awesome event. Now, a year later i am the new kid on the block hoping to be a part of it!

It's called the 'Fun Factory' and that is a go-cart track on the outside. They have a bunch of stuff on the inside like a bowling alley, laser tag, etc.
I'm on the fence about heading south this year. Gotta see if I get a tax return (interest free loan to the gub'ment) or if I owe. The kitchen remodel has me pretty well strapped.
I don't think my kids would want me taking their CHonda CRF50 (and I'd have to take the training wheels off)

At this point, it'll be a last minute thing for me... At best. Job has been running me stupid and it's doubtful I'll be able to disappear in May. If not for TMac, I'd like to run down to the dragon sometime this year. I should have some decent comp time built up after budget is over.
I really want to make it but it's not looking so good for this year. Looks like I'll be in classes and they won't let me take leave unless there's a family emergency or something. If the schedule changes I'll let y'all know.
Still thinking about it. Working on something right now. I'd like to come down a few days ahead and stay a bit longer. Time off of work isn't the problem though.
I know some of you are contending with winter, but it has mostly skipped us this year. So I took a ride and figured I would snap a shot and give you something to daydream about waiting for TMac to roll around.

Do you all typically bring your own tools (just in case), or is there a resident tool bringer. I am already thinking about what to pack! How about bobbles and trinkets for a swap meet or bargin table of sorts? I have some stuff I could bring if it is the norm...

I usually have us pretty well covered - from basic hand tools, chain breakers, tire changers, spare tires, batteries, chains, stators, R/Rs, air tools/compressor, etc.

Well now, my good friend and our VFRD fellow Zoomy, took quite a spill the other day up in Suches (NGA) and totaled his VFR. The bad news is, he has a very black and blue ass and a very bruised ego, as well as was my supposed to be roomie for TMAC.
The good news is, he is well insured, doing fine, and likely to find a good replacement. Maybe he will now join me in the intermediate group instead of trying to live up to his screen name!!!!! LOL Love you buddy, can't wait to see the GOPRO video!

Has anyone else considered following the Blue Ridge Parkway down to the event on Wednesday and Thursday?
Right now I'm tentatively planning to hop on the BRP early Wednesday morning (5/16) at the northern entrance (I-64 at Afton Mountain) and may make a hotel reservation for Wednesday night near or in Asheville, N.C. For Thursday I'll probably follow the BRP all the way (or almost) to Cherokee before heading south for the Microtel in time to arrive that afternoon.
If anyone has similar plans and would be interested in hooking up on the BRP on Wednesday please PM me. I would also consider heading out a day earlier (i.e. on Tuesday.the 15th).
F.y.i. I'll probably keep my cruising speeds on the BRP down to 55 mph (actual/GPS), or less depending on weather and traffic conditions. Note: maximum speed signs along the length of the BRP are limited to 45 mph (or less)..

She is riding the family hand me down Seca 2 now--we plan on heading to Franklin later in the summer....
Weather pending I'll be on the BRP Tuesday, morning. Picking it up around Fancy Gap at I77.
I rode SkyLine drive and the BRP top to bottom back in 09 and it's a blast but there is a 120miles or so from just north of Roanoke to just south of I77 area that will bore the heck out of you. It's flat some what straight and just a bunch of farmers fields. You'll know it when you get too it, it's about 20mins off to I81 of you want to save an hour or so and skip the flat spots.
BRP is a solid 2 day trip if you just ride, but there are some cool things to see so you really want to enjoy it give yourself 3 days.

I am bringing various gear with me to sell too. Not my leathers but other gear that is in really good shape. My helmet for example is a 2011 Shoei from the factory at $500. Some I'm selling, some I'm adding to the door prizes, and some I've already given away. Anyway thought I'd add.

I had originally booked a non-smoking room. Since I do smoke, I've talked to Kay and had my res. changed to a smoking room. According to Kay, that frees up one non-smoking room. She implied that this is the last non-smoking room available. Just one more reason to do the deed now. Esp. if you do not smoke.

Leave the weather forecasts alone people! This time last week Sunday looked great for a ride to the Cherohala. Then it changed to pretty bad. Then sorta not. Then sorta bad again. Finally, on Sunday morning it still looked like a mixed bag. So I looked out the window, saw dry pavement, and went for a ride. Never saw a drop until I put the bike away after a 9 hour day in the saddle.

I've been on vacation for 42mins. Would leave this weekend but wife is going out of town so I have to drive her to the airport Sunday and pick the mother-in-law up at the train station on Monday afternoon to watch the kids, Tuesday morning can't come fast enough
So glad to be bringing the HeroHD to this event. Something tells me, the evening parking lot antics will be the highlight of the trip....

Yep, my very first time down the Dragon was in the pouring rain and 55 degree weather. I was warm and dry riding the pace through the dragon and had a blast. Me and my buddy where 2 of about 8 we saw the entire stretch including Deals Gap resort.
OK, I've rented 70 Chairs for the event so that we can continue our tradition of hanging out in the parking lot telling lies over drinks!
But they won't be delivered until Thursday morning around 10am so you early arrivals will be out of luck till then! :tongue:

Rethink this, Kevin. A bunch of pop-ups leaking all over the place should it rain would be a disaster. We could avert it my having everyone kick in $10. I know some T-partiers don't like new taxes but maybe just this once :rolleyes:
OK, I've rented 70 Chairs for the event so that we can continue our tradition of hanging out in the parking lot telling lies over drinks!
But they won't be delivered until Thursday morning around 10am so you early arrivals will be out of luck till then! :tongue:

We've done the EZ-ups before w/o issue, but if it looks like a deluge we can see if we need to get the tent I can call next Tuesday or Wednesday and he'll set it up.
So glad to be bringing the HeroHD to this event. Something tells me, the evening parking lot antics will be the highlight of the trip....
I'm going to look around and see if I can find some moonshine to bring. Always a good icebreaker....hahahahhaha

we are staying at Fontana, right on 28. Yesterday I took 28 from the gap all the way to SC and it was sublime! Than ended up going through GA for a while and it sucked but somehow just following my hand scribbled rough directions I ended up on Cherahola in TN and rode that to 129 and back tho the lodge, not bad for my first ever ride in the area (it rained Wsdnesday so I only managed 50 miles) yesterday 295 miles, 4 states and 6 state lines.

It's been one hell of a week at work, home, Tmac planning and such. Finally got done with the week and head out to pick up my PP/PR2 set of Michelins I ordered last week and No Rear Tire!!!! :ohmy:
WTF! I checked on it mid week and was told it was on Wednesday's truck, but turns out it was backed ordered! :pissed:
Well picked up the front and mounted it on the bike so I won't have to mess with it also next Tuesday when the rear is suppose to come it. Hopefully I can run and get it after work before HS rolls into my driveway.
Way Too much Stress this week, can't wait to just get on the road. :tour:

Got a brand new PR2 hangining in the garage here in Knoxville. Got the full set-up in the garage if you get stuck just stop in on the way to Franklin and it will be on and balanced in less than 30 minutes. Also got everything else needed to maintain the average VFR including oil and oil filters and quality wheel bearing grease. I am just off I-40/75 so you don't have to plan anything more than an hour or so ahead of time.
If you want you can leave a day early and stay here the night, we have a spare room.

My guy ordered from a different supplier STTgear and they fed him BS about the tire. He ordered from the regular supplier this time and they are Very depenable.
The supplied breakfast(highlights)is a waffle maker(Belgum),bagels w/creamcheese and other stuff,chooses of cereals,fruit,muffins,coffee and a bunch of other stuff.
Last night I walked over to "The Huddle House"(1st time).... lot's of good food kind of like a Waffle House(good).
The staff is frendly here. I'm don't "think" there is a supply of bike towels(but haven't asked yet).

Okay - not only did Adam total his bike and doesn't have a replacement yet but now I approach the weekend you have all been planning for months and I think I may be able to make time to come up for at least a day or two.
Any GA riders looking to get out for a day or two, Saturday to Sunday? If so let me know and I will try and put something together. I would hate for you all not to get to meet or ride with me during the greatest event of the year when I'm only 1.5 hours away....... =)
And by the way - looks like the lack of hotels, we may be roughing it.....

Fatz is pretty good. They had one in Easley, SC where my parents used to live. Good ribs, beer, ect....Imagine upgraded Applebees...

Outstanding! It'll be good to see you again. Although I promised myself I would never again ride behind a 6th gen with a fully gutted exhaust because they just don't make earplugs that good. I know, I know it was lost in a glorious pyrotechnic display. But it is a TMac memory nonetheless.
Dutchy and I went to Fats last night, I had just finished eating(19;30) and met Dutchy in the lobby of the Mic' so we went back over to Fats and had some drinks while he had a healthy salad and drink.......... talked about his trip over and down the BRPW..........Then went to his room for some more conversation and single malt........ That's when the conversation picked up a beat.....Great guy........It's been raining pretty good until today, which is cleared up at this point, and I am going riding, Dutchy had some other places to go and will be back here Wed.
Don't worry, although I have threatened to gut my OEM pipes just for the TMAC events, I still have the sweet Microns. And I'll probably be riding sweep (if needed) for one of the less aggressive groups as I'll be two up. Mrs. BillyJackJimBob is making the trip as well. Her name is Carri, but we'll call her SharronGene for the weekend. ;)
