Might be best to note that Friday is the official departure day.  I was reading the July 10-12 as meaning the departure (checkout) date was Thursday.

A few repeats of the Duffy Lake Loop next year will solidify you, and you'll be golden!

Booked for the trailer I do not yet own.  I'll probably add a day on the end but have not yet decided.  The trailer I plan to own will also be a track day trailer with some sleeping accommodations so I can just sleep the last night in the trailer.  It shall be grand!

Warm to warmer.  Last year, we had a little rain (on the way there and 1 stormy night) but very comfortable.

(F) 80° - 90° during the day: Shorts & T shirts

50° - 57° during the evening: perhaps jeans & a light jacket/ long sleeve

If it's sunny - wear sun screen, hat & shades

If it rains - wear a jacket & shades

If it's cool - wear jeans, a jacket & shades

If it's hot - strip down to shorts & your shades

Rum is for the tropics. Whiskey for the mountains....   OK - I'm good either way....Not too picky....

Made reservations this am for Fred (huntinggunns) and I. All of the $99 rooms are booked up. We booked a king for $109. Looking forward to seeing old friends, meeting new friends, and seeing some beautiful countryside.

Of course ATGATT  is the standard - no squid attire was implied - simply referencing after ride day was done.

Riding temp?  Nothing extreme in the way of AM/PM temp swings in SD, but when getting there (for us out West) a few mountain passes require a few thermal layers.

I always ride with layers.  Like an onion.  So I can peel my scarred emotions and stuff them deep down (in my luggage) only to return when tortured.

LOL.  So shall I.  I may try to squeeze in Utah or Colorado on the return trip so I will probably pack the cold weather stuff, too.  Is it July yet?

We'll be checking in on Monday, 7/9 .... through Thursday ... and rolling out on Friday, 7/13.

I have NOT spoken to them nor checked into this location, other than seeing they have a 4.5 star rating on google maps.

There is also a Best Western a ½ mile S on Mt Rushmore Rd.  605.673.2275.

Again, no knowledge on this location, other than a 3.9 rating on google maps.

The Chief looks like a good alternative . . . covered bike parking, bike cleanup supplies and towel provided and for $8 they'll  wash and fold a bag of laundry (or you can DIY it).    Hmmm . . .

The laundry service is a few doors down, beside the Family Dollar at the 'Lost Sock'.  We used them last summer and yes, for $8 they wash/dry/fluff/fold.

In the new year I'll be updating the lead post with additional area details and working on the itinerary for the event.

Thanks Axel,  Great to see the early interest in the SS4.  I guess this means I really need to do this.

Now that the Christmas week is here, I'll be working on the event minutia including registration.

I'm not using PayPal anymore so I need to come up with new registration options.  Will most likely use Eventbrite again.

Last few times I paid a higher than expected amount due to currency exchange & bank fees.

I may have to seek out a US member to act as treasurer or something.

Been working on a logo.  Still needs tweaking.

Stay tuned in the coming week for the updates as I get them sorted.  Heck, I still need to figure out what I'll be riding   :wacko:   ???

That would be me :tongue:   It was cool to see the herd of VFR's stream into Fossil last year.  So this year I will be participating in the V4 orchestra with the Aprilia.

I haven't decided if I will be riding from Portland or trailering to LaGrande and riding from there.  I knock off almost 900 miles if I trailer to LaGrande.  The big Ape has a habit of eating rear tires and the latter option may save my bacon on this long of a trip.  The roads to LaGrande are great but I plan on covering those roads on a 3 day trip to LaGrande/Lewiston/Hell's Canyon/Baker City before the Sum Sum.  I'm coming up with around 3600 miles round trip not including 2 days riding in the SD area.

Would that be La Grande, Oregon? Isn't that only about 250 miles from you? I would be interested in trailering part way as well.

A route suggestion for the East Siders across the Northern Plains:

Starting from Sioux City IA going west take US 20 to Willis NE, then follow state highway 12 to Valentine NE. That is all I know of this route, Valentine being my destination before heading south. It is called the Outlaw Trail Scenic Byway. 

MotorMike and I took this route on the way to the last SumSum. Quite a scenic two-lane.

And for the high-speed-road-of-your-life (at least in the middle USA) find highway 97 south from Valentine to at least Mullen (~ 75 mi). This road goes through the Sand Hills area of NW Nebraska. Dune-tops are ~ 1 mi apart, with fabulously open sight lines ( nothing along that stretch grows more that 2 ft tall). While I'd never contemplate doing so, it could easly be a 90mph - 120mph ride. There are virtually no intersecting roads and no traffic. I've ridden that road many times without seeing more than a few other vehicles. Only well-fenced grazing cows. The normally staid MotorMike, after leading the pair of us all the way,  exclaimed to me at the end of the route "THAT WAS THE BEST RIDE EVER!"  or something along those lines.

If not this trip, this is a Bucket List worthy road. And it continues south from Mullen. More of the same.

I just booked the last single in the rocket, but she said she has four of the family units left if anyone wants to get a group room.

I'm planning on going this summer, as it should only be about a 6 hour ride for me.  Guess I'll need to start searching for another motel though, if I'm going to get a single room.

Maybe a few brave souls should 'dorm' up with the last few family rooms.

@Axel_7 - Thanks for the ride along invite, but I'm taking a different route to take a day-tour of Little Bighorn battlefield.   Home - Kamiah, ID - Hardin, MT (2 nights) - Custer, SD    

All of our reservations are made and registration forms filled out at this time. This will be our itinerary if anyone wants to catch up along the way. We will be using the bike trailer and will have room in the truck if anyone needs some thing hauled up there. Saturday, July 7th we are traveling from Oklahoma City to Cozad, NE. Sunday, July 8th we will travel from Cozad, NE to Custer, SD and arrive at the Rocket motel. We only have a king in our room but I bet we could do a cot if someone needs a place to crash. Monday, July the 9th we will be traveling from Custer, SD to Baker, MT and eventually ending up in Bowman, ND. Tuesday, July 10th we will be traveling from Bowman, ND back to Custer to start meeting up with Sum Sum arrivals. We are going to catch MT. Rushmore and a couple of other attractions while in the area before the official meet starts. If anyone needs any help transporting things or anything at all, just let us know. See everyone soon.

Great to see all the early interest and registrations coming in.

A big part of choosing Custer & SD as the destination was the monuments in the area, giving a chance to see some incredible sites, perhaps even bucket list items.

The day rides include stops at some of the most known, with time for getting off the bike, checking them out, taking pics.

Of course, there are a bunch of cool, little back roads and smaller vistas to search and enjoy.

I'll be providing a list & route(s) to many of these, some you may know, some you may be surprised to see.

Same with coming through Wichita, Kansas. Although I cannot right now offer grilling of foods. I can do the stoving of foods. Or Braum's. Braum's is tasty!

Have to start booking a route home......   The wife is ready, Me not so much... But can't wait to see everybody, and see the area.

I'm having mixed feelings...what started out as my yearly Moto getaway could be turning into something else entirely. I may have my sixteen year old daughter as pillion. That means I would have to bring the "big dirt bike"...ugh. I was so wanting to bring the Fizzer-09 to play with the VFR's...

Will ride out with the Lower Mainland group if they will have me. looking forward to it.  Will try to book at the Rocket in the event they had cancellations, but I see there are a few motels right close by if they are booked up. Travelling solo otherwise.  Wife has made it perfectly clear she will not get on a bike.

I haven't decided yet if I am returning with the group or finding my own way back.

I have a room at the Rocket. Also working on my own stamina. I'm not in bad shape but also have not done multiple days on a VFR for about 10 years. (My FJR is much more comfy). My wife is encouraging me to trailer over there. Me? NAH! Just muscle through the backpain. Makes a cold beer at the end of the day better anyway.

Looking forward to it also. I've been cleaning the VFR up but I just don't think I can do a week on it anymore, I've gotten so used to the relaxed position on the Multi, I'll probably be on that. Looking forward to some road time!

Um, ya - I guess this would be a good idea. Haven't been on the bike since July last year.  Only 6 weeks to go.

The pressure feels like cramming for exams the night before.  Hoping to solve the non-starting issue this weekend and get out on some seat time.

I suppose this means I should really get serious about doing some maintenance.

I can bring one, even get a BC flag, if there is a reason. I'm finally off the fence--just booked at the Chief and registered.  It's usually not clear to me how the summer will unfold until it gets closer.  But then again, I have managed to make the last two SumSums (didn't have a VFR for the first one), so it would be a shame to break the streak.  I'll most likely be tacking a week of vacation on to the end of the meet (as I have the last couple of times ...), so as before I'll have to slab it most of the way there.  Intercepting  the group headed south from Canada and the Pacific Northwest might still be possible for the last day or two.  Now to get the bike in shape and start envisioning the ride with some of Maxswell's "wild anticipation."  And thanks again to Tony for scouting and organizing!  :beer:

Sadly, as one confirms another cancels.  I thought I had confirmed getting out of work commitments in mid-July, but sadly things have changed and I need to be here in town the third week of July (the 16th...) - so I cancelled my room (regular king bed) at the Rocket a few hours ago (Brenda sounds lovely on the phone!) and it is up for grabs.

Too bad - I was looking forward to catching up with some familiar faces, chasing down some VFR's and looking forward to stretching the legs on my new Tiger 1200 XCA  ... oh well :(

If any Vancouver area riders are planning on heading through the Kootenays on their first day and want some company as far as Nelson, let me know.

My tires are good for the ride down and the day rides, but might be a little sketchy by the time I get home depending on how far I go in Colorado, Utah and Idaho.  I checked Rice's site, and their prices are comparable to FortNine and Rider's Domain with the 35 percent discount.  Any idea what they charge for balancing and installation?  Does the 35 percent discount apply to labour too? 🤔

Regrettably, I have to back out of this trip. I wrote off my truck and to get back into another vehicle is going to cost me more than I had thought.  Spending a lot of money for this trip at this particular time is just not wise.  Maybe next one.

E-Ticket and The Flying Ant are getting kind of tired of the "it's your turn in the barrel."   😥

We had to bow out of the last VFR PNW rally due to getting our 1930's house's cinderblock foundation reinforced.
We are now bullet-proof and hopefully earthquake-'resistant.'    :^)
But it took MAJOR bucks to pull off.

Fast forward to 2018 and we were totally jazzed about SumSum4 in Custer!
(We went north after SumSum3 was over and did Custer/Rushmore/NeedlesHighway/Devil'sTower.  Had a total ball.)

We have a room reserved at the Rocket Motel and were so looking forward to seeing everyone again.

But.  BUT.    Gawd … life always seems to have a 'but' here and there.   :^(

After a major blockage, we have been informed that our main sewer line exiting the house is 80% blocked

by tree roots coming into the pipe joints.   Arrghhhh!!!
Worse yet?   Our main sewer line runs under a concrete wall and driveway/sidewalk.
Initial quote from one plumbing firm was $11,000 freeekin' US dollars to do a pipe burst/replacement.   😳  ….  😣…. 😭
We're hoping to get more bids so we can get the price down … but it's still going to hurt something awful.

So we have the time set aside for SumSum4 … but it looks like the funds for it are about to go bye-bye.  :^(

At this point, we are going to be a 'no-show.'    crapcrapcrapcrap.   ☹️

That being said -- we are not 'officially' throwing in the towel until later in June.
Because, hey …. miracles happen all the time, right?     :^)

At that point, we'll pull the plug … talk to y'all … and release our reserved room at the Rocket Motel in case someone wants

What sort of temperatures are to be expected in this region at that time of year?

FWIW I feel I should chime in here just because. 🙂 South Dakota in mid-July can be extremely hot, the last time, okay

first and last time, I was there in mid-July I stopped for gas at a station in Spearfish. Shade can be scarce up in that area

at times so I was grateful for the station overhang. I checked out the thermometer and it read 106°. So be aware that

extreme temperatures can happen and stay hydrated. I was riding a 1971 Triumph Bonneville and I was waiting for the

darned thing to seize from over heating. But it didn't. 🙂

We usually travel up there in early June or late August, early September. And be patient with the Harley riders that are there

early before Sturgis, they aren't used to curves and I've followed some that were slower than the dump trucks following them.

Those guys can make you feel like you got caught in the Rose Parade.   One run I made between  Red Lodge and Cook City, MT I finally started passing them in groups - sometimes 5 to 10 at a time.  I wasn't trying to be a jerk - but I just couldn't stand it any more - they would take corners marked 25 mph at 15 to 20 - just ridiculous.  The area from Custer north does look to have a lot of very tasty roads - there should be a lot of good ride reports coming. 

Yeah, riding behind a group of them on a semi-twisty road just seems like Christmas time, what with

all the flashing red lights. It will drive you bonkers.

Honest to gawd I did not make that up about the dump truck, only it was a garbage truck and he was

the first in a long line of traffic being held up by group of three or four Harleys that were slowing down

for every slight bend in the road. Crazy.

Well … we have been waiting and hoping …. but NONE of our Powerball tickets have proven to be winners.
So, with the impending big bill ($8-11K USD) for our sewer main repair looming on the immediate horizon … E-Ticket and The Flying Ant 
are going to have to withdraw from SumSum4.    

 
Which just sucks.    :^(   We were so looking forward to seeing everyone again.

We have a room reserved at the host Rocket Motel from July 10-13.
We are going to be contacting the Rocket Motel on Tuesday/Wednesday to cancel our reservation and get our

first night deposit back.

Before doing so, I wanted to check to see if there are any VFRD peeps that wish to slide into our reservation room
before the Rocket Motel just frees it up for general use.

Please reply back as soon as you can -- as we will be pulling the plug on Wednesday, late afternoon.

I've attempted to load the day route options in .gpx file format as the GPS files.

I'm not sure if I did it correctly, so editing is welcome.

There are a few tricky roads that I had to adjust from the google maps/ printed version that I missed as being short, compact gravel roads.

Please, take care to check your routes.  I've done the best I can to avoid gravel and will ensure to double check before heading out.

I'll have my PC and flash drives with me (along with cables) for anyone wishing to upload at the Rocket.

T- 2 weeks & 3 days!!

For those interested in taking in the Minuteman Missile facility, I might recommend checking out their website prior to deciding to go that route.  It's spread out over a bit of distance - the visitor's center, Launch Control Center (LC) and an open silo.  The Launch Control center is an underground tour that requires advance reservations.  I did some searching on their website and it appeared that the LC tours are sold out for 7/11 and 7/12 (someone please double check me on that).   The silo doesn't appear to need a reservation - you look down in to the silo - no underground tour there.  The visitor center (VC) is a few more miles down the road at exit 131 - about 15 miles from the LC to VC.  The VC looks like it might be interesting.  There's also parking garage construction at both the LC and Silo so parking is limited - the latter sounds to be the most so - in the driveway only.  YMMV

I am packing up the tow rig on Saturday with 3-4 VFRs and 3 VFRD'ers and heading towards Custer.

As I read through this thread I see that I have missed several pacing items that required a response.  I will reach out to Tony when we arrive to see if there may be a spare beer or some such convenience.

Reserved my room on page one of this or the other thread but never confirmed.  Not used to such a thorough process. Looking forward to riding this area on a VFR instead of the F6B I went through there on my way home from Alaska on last year. 

Not sure if I will be bringing my bespoke 5th gen that fits like my favorite pair of jeans or the ToroCharged 6th gen which still needs some fuel injection tuning, an exhaust and to have Traxxion work their magic.  See you guys in a week.

It pains me greatly to write this. I will not make the event this time around. Although it is not usually the case in the summer, I've suffered from chronic depression since adolescence. This past month or more I've had a relapse. I have no energy. 

I'm telling my self this is only for now. That it will pass. That I will travel by VFR again. Just not now.

I'll miss seeing all you folks greatly. I hope you have a great and accident free gathering.

I have replaced two stators while on tours.  In both cases, is behaved like it had a dead battery.  Matter of fact, the first time, I did replace the battery.  Hope you get it worked out nd continue on your way.

Feel for you Kevin I’m having a problem as well. Believe it is the stator again. Will limp into Custer and if needed order one in. Good luck with your bike.

Don’t know if stator has been replaced.  If not replaced as park of normal maintenance then not likely.  

At least it died when I was at a rest stop and not out in the middle of nowhere without cell service to call a tow.   Was able to book a hotel for at least 3 nights. 

I’ve also called the Rocket about my predicament. 

Will update when I have news.

It’s not a VFR gathering unless someone has electrical issues. We spent the last couple of hours riding twenty minutes and swapping batteries to get mine to the hotel this spring. Turned out to be burned wires between the stator and r/r. Back on the road in about an hour thanks to Todd.

Todd (trem) was amazing that week. I learned a lot just watching. He saved a lot of bacon, including his own.

The Sweeper/Carver clan just5 crossed into South Dakota on I90...we are about 6 hours out and Randy is driving this tank of petrol.  Fuel sto in less than 15 miles and it will be my turn.

Several of us had to back out last minute due to "life issues and demands."   :^(

These go by so quickly.  What a trip over the Rockies with Derek, Tammy, Rob, Craig, Darren, Jeff and Al.  So great riding and hanging out with you all.   I'd do it again next week.   You're the best.   

Saw old friends and made new ones.   My special thanks to Corner Carver for letting me sample some real hp and to the Carver clan for diving in on our dead stators.  VFRD at its best.

- OUTSTANDING hospitality from Don & Brenda the owners of the Rocket Motel (everyone needs to post 5******* on google & trip adviser for them)

- The many helping hands to make the event such a smooth operation, best in 9 years.

I'm sure a flood of pics will follow as everyone departed today.

Rangemaster and I made it across Nebraska and most of East Colorado, parting ways at 2:40p in Limon, CO. I just rolled into the garage at 4p.

Tammy works on cornering skills in the parking lot while Mr Carver instructs and 4 other volunteers lean the bike so she can get the feel of it.   

The Carvers play tug of war with CagelessinSeattles stator wire.  Those things are a real PITA on a 6th gen, but were no match for a determined bunch of VFRD attendees.  Lots of hands pitching in on that  one. 

Finally the Rocket near sunset.   It was neat as a pin and the owners were super hosts.  I needed a battery for my cell phone - the closest availble was in Rapid City an hour away.   They offered to pick it up for me as they were headed there later in the day.   You won't find that at a chain hotel.  They were super nice people,  and good cooks too!!

A riding buddy of mine (5th gen owner) died in his sleep last year at the way too young age of 49.   He had emigrated from Ireland and motorcycles were his life as well as livelihood.   The sticker I received at his funeral went on my windscreen so he could ride along.   He would have loved it.

I so wished I was able to be there.  Is this an annual event or bi-annual event? Depending on just when it happens, I may be recovered enough from up coming hip surgery to make it next year. That will be the goal anyway.

Made it home last night at 11:15 pm, rattling clutch and all, after parting ways with panamawing and Lee2002. Thanks to Tony for allowing me to register late and for organizing a super event. This was my first big VFRD ride, and I had an absolute blast! I don't think I've ever met a nicer group of people. 

The Carver Clan just pullover into Casa de Carver and unloaded the bikes from the trailer, 21 hours after we left yesterday.  Pics to follow.

Dittos to Tony. I was not there but can only imagine half of the effort it took to put this shin-dig on. Despite not attending - we all benefit from the generosity of Tony and others on this forum. Thank you. 

Once again, Tony arranged an amazing meet.

Huskysooner and I left NE Kansas at 0500 to meet Panamawing in Nebraska.   We then headed west to our first destination.   There is a street in western Nebraska that I share a name with and I've always wanted to visit it, but never had the opportunity.

Heading north we crossed the Sand Hills of Nebraska.... a beautiful but desolate place with little sign of human presence.  It was here that I first noticed I was having problems.  I thought I had lost my speedometer drive nut as my display showed erratic speeds and mileage stopped rolling up.   Unfortunately this was not the case, apparently the pulse generator or electronics that read it have low tolerance of low voltage.  My stator was failing.   At Alliance, NE my bike died when we pulled in to fill the tanks and would not start.  A quick check of the battery showed it sitting at 9 volts.  Huskysooner jumped on his dry clutch Ducati and rattled off to buy me a new battery.   I disabled all non-critical electric circuits.   A  check with the a meter showed that the bike could (just barely) maintain 12 volts at 5,500 rpm.  So off we went to Custer.  Me with no lamps.

At Custer, Huntingguns had returned from saving Cageless in Seattle from his burned stator.  He had already started the process of getting a pair of stators on order.   I was the lucky recipient of his foresight.  Even with the head start, much of my meet was spent waiting for the FedEx truck to arrive.  While I waited, I took a couple of small hikes around the area, taking in the history and scenery.

I was also in the right place at the right time to help in the recovery of Shade's bike when he suffered a broken chain.  A big thanks to Dragonfly and Q Dawg for providing the truck needed in this effort.  It was like a quick response team jumped into action when the call came in.  

As soon as FedEx arrived I got to work repairing my bike while Mini Carver went to work on Cageless' motorbike.  For those who showed interest in my mini ratchet set google <Wadsworth Super Deluxe Mini-ratchet set>

As can be expected with any parking lot repair at a meet, there was a good size "cheering" section with all hands at the ready.  Other than stubborn gaskets, all went well on both bikes.

Not to be outdone, I burned my stator (right) to a slighly toastier state than Cageless.   My bike had 55,xxx miles on it at this point.  (New - 24 vac @ idle, 62 vac @ 5500 rpm)

The evening festivities were entertaining and fun with Didit keeping everyone in stitches with Corner Carver's help on occasion.  (They are not quite the team that Timmy and Carver are, but there was no shortage of things to laugh at.)

My multi-meet roomate, GSwanson has moved from his sixth gen VFR to a BMW S1000 XR.   He choked me up when he made a presentation of his Sargent saddle to me.   I can tell you that it is a huge improvement over the stock seat as witnessed by the comfort I had on my 750+ mile ride home.

I was greatly honored when CVVFR arranged to gift me a flag signed by the Canadians.   It is a huge honor and a life treasure that I will display proudly.  I can't even begin to explain how much this gesture meant to me.  Thank you Canadian crew!!!!!

At the advice of Axel_7 and Tammy, I was up before the sun the next day to take in the local sights on a foggy morning before the crowds could settle in.   It was great advice as I had everything to myself.

Following the ride Huskysooner, Panamawing and I joined forces again for the ride to our homes.   Led by Panamawing, we took in a few more sights on our way out of Custer.   We were able to witness the overnight/day shift change at the bison roadblock when the bison going off duty was relieved by his mate.  As one wandered off the road another quickly stepped forward to maintain the post.

Rangemaster made it home Saturday to Albuquerque just before the afternoon monsoon. Did another 100 miles after COS_VFR (many thanks) and I part ways in Limon Co. Great to have a riding partner thru some of the most desolate country I've ever seen. Great time, nice to see everybody and meet some new great people. Many thanks to Tony for a fun few days. 

I don't want to turn this into a "technical thread" …..  b-u-u-t-tttt.   😜

A quick question:  my '99 5th-Gen Viffer is now north of 50,000 miles.   
I have replaced the regulator/rectifier with a better unit … and I have the upgraded wiring harness thingy.

But should I also be thinking about just replacing the stator as a "just in case?"
And if so, what with?   Stock unit?   Or is there something better out there?

I don't have an answer to that but you have a limited number of members who are monitoring this thread so even though there may be very experienced and capable people here, you are missing out on many.  I suggest you consider posting a specific thread about this.  You will get far more replies than on this thread I am sure.

I only mentioned it here because the immediacy of the recent events that occurred on SumSum to a couple of peeps.

It's the 6th gens that fry stators.
5th gens fry R/Rs.

I have only seen 2x 5th gen stators go south compared to hundreds of 6th gen ones.

If concerned do the multimeter tests for Stator output on all 3 phases and check resistance and continuity. It's in the workshop manual. You could place the bike on centre stand, place wide diameter basin below to catch the little oil that will leak, pop the Stator cover and check its colour and general visual aspect. Does it look like it's crispy dark brown or black?
Have a little gasket goo for reassembly. But like I said, not common on 5th gens.

Took Lolo Pass back yesterday.   Repaving has begun for the balance of summer.   It needs it - the pavement further up toward the summit on the Idaho side is deteriorating (visible in the photo).  The Montana side is still very nice.  I thought they might not be working on a Sunday - they were.   Delays ran about 30 mins. total. I'd wager it will take at least this summer and next to finish it.

Based on the photos, I am very impressed by the high % of VFR's on a VFRD ride!

I arrived home about 10:30 last night. Got in one last day of riding with the gang around the world famous Dragon. Didn't get a lot of pics because there wasn't much stopping.

I just got home and will be converting/ posting one up this weekend.

Well, after 4 more days of riding, 2½ days off at the lake, I've finally arrived home and unpacked for the last time (this month).

Incredible weather on the final leg today, with lingering smoke in the valley.

Glad I chose the return route I did, as Hwy 97 was closed in one section due to fires.

Once I get my files sorted, I'll see if I have any post worthy images, but hard to compare the great stuff shared by others.

Note to self: assign a designated, camera happy person to cover the event in full (both family & NSFW)!

Click on the icon and then copy the web address

Go to Name (upper right of screen) 》Account settings 》Signature

Click on "Insert other media"

Select "insert image from url"

Paste the web address in

Before saving, double click on the image

A box opens.  

Click on pixels, select 85

Click Save

If you wish to rearrange icons, drag them as appropriate and save.

A little slow on posting. Home safe and sound. Thanks to everyone who shared this great event. Thanks to Tony for an incredible job of organizing. I look forward to the next ride.

I got home Sunday afternoon after spending a couple of days in Denver, then riding to Park City, UT, spending four days hiking there and taking three to ride the 1,000 miles from Utah home.  No issues with the bike, total mileage for the tour was 3,525 miles/5,673 kms.

First, thanks to Tony (Didit) for organizing another great SumSum.  It's always nice to see familiar faces and meet some new folks too.  The rides were great, and this was the most educational VFRD event I've attended.  I learned a lot watching Lee and Kevin's stator-ectomies as well as Ernest's chain resection.  My bike is due for some maintenance this winter.  Since reliability is important to me, I'll be inspecting (and probably replacing) my stator.  The chain also has some stiff, slightly kinky links, so chain and sprockets are on the list too.

I also enjoyed the parking lot Corner Carver Clinic™ with Tammy as pilot.   For some reason I always like turning right better than left.  The cornering tips gave me a new way of thinking about cornering so that left turns were more enjoyable (an opportunity to practice) for the rest of the tour.  It was great to finally meet the famous Carver clan, and see the enthusiasm with which mini-Carver tore into Kevin's stator transplant. 

It was unfortunate that Kevin and Lee had to sit out the ride days waiting for parts, but the superhuman effort by Fred and Lisa to rescue Kevin from Bozeman, MT and the parking lot repairs that allowed everyone to ride home were inspiring.

I hope Honda is aware of sites (thanks Miguel) and rider communities like ours and that it encourages them to continue development of the V4 800 and bring it back into the North American market.

I decided to try something new on this tour.  I left my trusty Nikon digital camera and Samsung netbook behind and brought only my Samsung smartphone.  I hate typing with my thumbs, so I picked up a small, folding bluetooth keyboard to use with the phone.  I also bought a US SIM card to avoid outrageous roaming charges.  It all seemed to work pretty well and was a much smaller, lighter setup.

I arrived at The Chief Motel on Tuesday, unloaded the bike, showered and headed toward The Rocket looking for other VFRD inmates.  I spotted Tony and a few others walking to the brew pub next door for dinner--and SumSum4 was on!

The next morning I set off with Curry, Al and Gordon but our progress was quickly halted by a lot of unprocessed hamburger meat in the road.

All the photos are nice Belfry but that last one is quite majestic.  It really hits home in that one just how small our own things are in comparrison to Mother Earth. Fantastic.  Looks like you really enjoy our nature.

I started combining bike tours and hiking about 15 years ago. That shot of the Wasatch range was taken after 2,500 feet of elevation gain--a lot of switchbacks were ... back switched by that point.  I haven't found a way (or a camera) to adequately capture steep grades in photos.  But to your point:  180 degrees from where that photo was taken was this:

The summit of Mt. Timpanogos.  We didn't go all the way to the top.  We were already three hours in and though we started early, the temps were getting high and water was low.   On the way down, we started to catch up to some other hikers.  Speaking of small, insignificant things:  They're the little dots of colour on the trail.  :smile:

A few years ago I was discussing summer holidays with a neighbour. She said: "So you must really like Neil Peart."  I knew Peart was the drummer for Rush, but I thought it was a bit of a non sequitur until she explained that he had written some books about motorcycle touring, hiking--and playing stadium rock concerts.  She lent me her copy of Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road.  It was written after his wife and daughter died.  He took to the road to work things out.  He rides a BMW GS, but don't hold that against him.  :wink:   I read another of his books (Roadshow:  Landscape with Drums, a Concert Tour by Motorcycle), where he rides between Rush gigs.  I'm only a moderate Rush fan, but in those books he mostly avoids the rock lifestyle and writes about riding and hiking.
