Starting noise

Ok, so I had a starting noise before, I took everything apart, checked for any signs of wear/grinding etc and nothing, I went ahead and changed out the starter clutch springs and after that, no more noise....Until today. It's quite odd in that the noise only happens when starting the bike with the choke ON, if I have it off...No noise. You can listen to the video below and hear for your self, audio is crap but gives a better idea than I could explain. You can hear the first try, which is without choke, the 2nd try is with, another note is that when the noise happens if I let it keep going it will stop turning over, seems to just "lock". I then cut it off and start the bike without choke on, with it getting cooler and cooler I don't see myself being able to start it much longer without choke. Year is 93.

I would get your battery tested first.

This is the year the starter clutch pins wear out correct? They get rounded over or somthing like that - which prompted a redesign on the next model. I would suspect it takes more torque to start a motor with the choke on so it slips.

For my 2 cents you get this....

I am going with 'hondalover' and suggest your battery sounds low.

If I am correct, I am thinking that with the choke on it makes it a little harder to spin the engine due to the increased resistance of the air flow.

At least that's what it sounded like to me. Sounds like it just doesn't have enough umpf (technical term) to turn it over. Then, with no choke, it cranks until it fires and runs enough to stay idling.

I do not believe it to be the battery. As the sharp grinding noise does not really make sense in that. Also, I tested with both batteries, both I checked on the charger to be perfect.

As far as these "starter clutch pins"....Where do I find these? I looked on ayers but could not seem to find anything relating to this part.

after using the search engine click here It seems a common issue with your generation is a cracked starter clutch housing. I am not sure you said you bought new springs so you must have inspected it?

Yes, I looked it over, though I did not look for cracks, but I would have seen them had they been there, when I replaced the springs, it was also some time ago, maybe it has cracked since then. And only one real way to find out, I will be taking her apart tomorrow. I had a spare set of springs I believe, so I will replace everything while it is apart I guess. And here I was thinking that little bit of toy money left over would be going to a new pair of winter pants.
