Too rich?

A friend of mine and I was just looking at my bike a few ago. He saw a light coat of black on the inside of my muffler and said I am running rich. Well, yeah. I kind of knew that already, I mean, I have the TC FPR and running the MAP in the forums for the smooth VTEC transition. Also, I added a tad at take off from the - side because I was stalling out at stoplights.

Question: How rich is too rich? I'd rather be rich than lean personally. We all know the dangers of lean. But what is your take on running rich other than loss of some MPG? Any inherant dangers from running rich?

popping from the exhaust, destroying your cat and the oxy sensor, and the gas mileage thing too. so you want to run the bike on the rich side... so get it tuned so you dont get the "popping" sound from the exhaust then go a little bit leaner then that and you'll be fine

You are right that too rich is better than too lean. But if your exhaust is that sooty you might want to consider backing down a little bit.

Coderighter posted a thread about the PC V with Autotune - you might check that out. If you're really worried about it, you could take it to a dyno and have them sniff the exhaust for the correct ratio. Besides the other maladies mentioned above, run too rich and it will tend to get more carbon deposits on the valves, combustion chambers and tops of the pistons as well as less fuel mileage.

even a stock vfr will have black spooge, but since your modded with a high pressure fuel pump, you might be rich, youd really have to look at your plugs. On a side note, Leaded race fuel will clean your motor from entry to exhaust tip . You look into my tail pipe its clean metal, no spooge, other than alittle gray paint.

I think most maps assume that you are running a stock fuel pressure regulator. So my guess is with the TC FPR you are running over rich. Suggest that you take the bike to a dyno shop and get it tuned properly. Good luck.
