I just installed a 45 litre top case on my 07 VFR. I purchased the top case from David Silver Spares and couldn't pass up on the deal. Problem is it's the wrong colour and doesn't match my OEM side cases.

I want to paint the top case to either match the side cases or matt black to go with the black seat and non-painted areas of the cases.

Colorite offers the 3-way paint system to match the colour but $90 seems steep for 3 cans of spray paint. I'm guessing a local body shop could paint it for equal or less.

I thought I'd put it to the group to offer feedback. Should I match the colours or go with black for a different look? Thoughts?

Could you post the cost of an auto-body shop, curious what it would be, if that's the route you choose? Color, really like that red on that year, match the bike and side cases that's my opinion.

I painted mine Krylon Satin Black. Spent less than $25 on paint and supplies and you can't tell it apart from a pro job.

I'm guessing you haven't gone to a body-shop recently? To have them color-match it to your bike would cost a lot more than $90. I had my hardbags painted for $75, but that's because I did all the prep work myself, and had them use the closest color they could find (and not necessarily an exact match.) I consider $75 to be extremely cheap for the quality paint job I got, and the match is really, really close for a red. It's hard to tell it's not an exact match. About the same difference in shade you might expect to see from 2 OEM panels sold at different times.

Did you spray satin paint followed by a satin clear coat or flat clear? I think satin or matte black finish would look great. If I could find a local shop I'd consider a vinyl wrap in satin black for all the luggage.

Just the satin, no clear coat. I did wax it after it cured. The satin is very easy to spray with an even coat. Biggest trick I found was to wet sand and use a tack cloth between coats.

Two words....

Canadian Tire.

Take off a bit of bodywork and wander around the touch-up paint aisle. The top case isn't going to be close to the Honda paint, so a slight difference won't be noticable. Rough up the surface with #400 wet, put on a couple of mist coats, 2-3 top coats, wet sand, rub down and polish. It won't be as good as Honda's finish, but it'll be about $20. If you're not sure about painting it yourself, buy a six-pack of Keiths for a more practiced friend.
