Air Filter Question

Had a day off so I decided to see what type of air filter was in my bike (bought it used). I got to the filter and it was an orange color pleated K&N style filter, but I don't know what brand it is, and was a little dirty not too bad but I want to clean or replace it. So do any of you know how to clean those style of filters? I think it's paper so I don't really know what to do with it as far as cleaning goes, as the only filters I've only really dealt with up until now were the foam ones on my dirt bikes. Also if you can't clean it and it just gets replaced, for street purposes what generally works better K&N style filters or UNI foam filters? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Can't be THAT dirty, you can tell it's orange. I took mine out the other day because my fuel economy was the pits. It was so dirty it was black. I soaked it in soapy water for an hour, blasted it with the hose, dried it in the sun and lo and behold it was orange! I put it back in and saw a marked improvement in the fuel economy. I also now find the infamous VTEC transition to be more abrupt, until the motor gets roaring hot. I'm guessing the motor was running rich with the clogged filter.

Unless its really dirty, there is not reason to change it, unless you're looking for a warm fuzzy feeling...a couple of beer works for me...

No it's not too bad but I'm ordering an oil filter and am going to order an air filter as well so I was just going to do them both now and only pay shippig once, since I have a $30 gift card to use. I found out today though that the filter is stock and I heard you can't clean the stock filters though so does anyone know if there's any real differences between foam and the paper/pleated style filters, or any personal preferences? I'm kind of swaying towards foam, for one they're cheaper and two I already have filter oil for the foam ones, but I'm open to the other style if they're actually better.

If it is a reusable filter (should not be paper) you just use regular dishsoap and water to clean it.

Then you lightly oil it with filter oil.

It's not a reusable one it's just the stock paper one I found out, but at least now I know how to clean the K&N style pleated filters thanks.

Paper offers the best filtration by lab testing, ive stuck with oem, even though the recommend is 12,000 mile change, only if you live in a really nasty area should it not go closer to 18,000 mile with no real notice. Probably alot longer, maybe 20,000 mile. Normally mine look about 40% clogged. K&n's are alot more porous, the oil is what filters, so its important with K&n.

The price is really about the same between an oem and K&N , if you know where to buy, but I dont like filter cleaning, and nothing is more filtering than the OEM.
