Going single side-exit

I saw a photo on here of a Aussie guy who went single side exit on the exhaust using an older VFR system. I liked the look, and coupled with a header am thinking it will give me the look and sound I am looking for (something bad ass and racy, compared to the two-bothers I have on now which sounds aggressive for the timid). The RWD scheme is not being helped out at all in the exhaust department.

The main issue is, the huge void that will be left under the seat. My business is selling car parts, and one of the items we offer is a bumper cap for S2000s. The cap that we produce is designed to go over the OEM bumper to cover the left-side tip cutout when people convert to a single-outlet system. The part is one of our biggest sellers and looks awesome.

I was eye-balling the rear of my VFR today thinking of doing a cap or under-tray that would cleanly cover the void. I can do it in carbon fiber, fiberglass, sheet aluminum, etc. But given the R&D and mold costs, I was wondering if this was something others might be interested in as well. Or, if it has been done by someone else already!

I'm definitely in, and I know at least a few others on vfrd have expressed interest or have already installed a single side-mounted exhaust system. I know such a panel has already been made by someone for a Repsol replica VTEC, but I believe that was a one-off (and it was on the other side of the pond, as well).

So, is anyone else interested? I know teksdailyride contacted me about my plans to build one a few months ago, but I definitely don't have the time nor the resources to do it right now, so if MrHeeltoe, if you were up for it, I think at least 3 or 4 guys would pony up to help offset the mold and development costs.

Anyone else? Come on, my bike needs a nice undertail panel to balance it out...

I once saw a picture of a 6th gen. VFR where somebody did the conversion you're talking about. Yes, the void looked awful.

If you're absolutely sure this is what you want to do, consider buying a subframe and rear cowl that came off a sport bike that didn't have an undertail exhaust system to begin with (the GSX-R 1000 being one example). Since there is no way it would bolt directly onto your bike, you'll have to fabricate the brackets to make it work.

What you see below is an example of what I'm talking about (only in this case, they went from a single, side-mounted exhaust canister to an undertail setup.) This bike started out as a 5th generation ('98-'01) VFR. The subframe and rear cowl came off a previous generation ('04-'07) CBR1000RR. There's no way on earth it was a direct bolt-on. The guys that built this bike fabricated the brackets to make it work.

EDIT:
Another possibility is to buy just the rear cowl off a GSX-R 1000 and finding a way to make it bolt onto your existing subframe. Since you're no longer going to have an undertail exhaust system, your subframe wouldn't need to be anywhere near as strong as it currently is. Where I'm going with this is that, conceivably, you could cut some of your subframe (if needed) to make the new cowl fit.

On a final note, I admit the Repsol VTEC looks sharp; however, I'd like to see before and after dyno charts. Just because its got a MotoGP-style exhaust, doesn't necessarily mean it's making more power. It might even be making less.

The reposol bike looks hot. The look like they have just a cover, like a roll pan on a mini-truck, probably open underneath.

I was out looking at the bike again today though...and was thinking there is a pretty good opportunity to put a storage bin there...

I`ve done a titanium side-mount on my `10 vfr and have been playing with cardboard templates to try and make an undertail cover

...................but to no luck!!

I would definately look into and be willing to through it down to clean my @^!&... rear end on my little beauty.

Here`s a picture of it before the `93 rear wheel, chinese PAZZO levers and tined screen.

Ah, yours is the bike I saw!

Well, the cap I make for S2000s runs $180 in FG and $280 or so in Carbon Fiber:

I think this part could end up running a bit more because I don't image we'll get lots of buyers. But, the cost should be pretty accessible. Hell, maybe I would make a CF front fender too, for kicks.


First things first I think I need to actually MOVE the exhaust to get working on the under-panel. Got any sound clips of your bike?

It actually isn`t all that loud!

It sounds like this bike off youtube, same brand mufflers, just one instead of 2, but identical sound!
