Phone as GPS, Rim Stripes and more

New member, had my VFR coming up on a year now and departing Friday for a trip from LA area to Colorado. Forum has been a great help and wanted to share some of what I've done.

I used a Powerlet adapter to take my Battery Tender hookup and make it a phone charger, hiding the rest of the wiring in my tankbag.

Still have to mount the hard luggage on the VFR but it looks so good without it I only use them for long trips.

Colorado thats my Neck of the Woods, I suppose your doing the obligatory Million Dollar Highway, it wont dissapoint its a great road hwy 550 up from Durango to Ouray. Then if you have time check out hwy 92 about 20 miles west of Gunnison on hwy 50 - cross the gunnison river over the blue mesa resevouir and then its 32 miles of some of the best twisties west of the missippi. Well its my favorite road anyway, there are all kinds of good roads in Colorado with great scenery but those are my favorite. Then head up to Paonia and ride the fast sweeper up and over McClure Pass, slab it a bit over to Aspen and over Independence Pass from there who knows there is all sorts of good there

This route is a good days ride!

If your comming in from LA I am sure the Grand Canyon is in your list, thats great of course but then head over to Monument Valley thats a good one, or Zion up in Utah, hwy 12 in Utah is fantastic scenery its called the Escalante Staircase, Southern Utah is scenery central, there are good roads east of SLC too but not as pretty. Enjoy the ride, pm me when you get to Colorado if you have the means.

Be careful leaking any electronics in the sunlight while riding. Be it in direct sunlight or under a clear layer of whatever. You'd be amazed at how hot they get and you never know until you pick it up or it shuts it's self down. Also tank bags can turn into a furnace. I keep the back half unzipped but there's still no air flow into it.

Might not be a bad idea to use a safety strap in addition to velcro, too. Velcro is pretty good, but you'd hate to have your phone come off at 60 mph.

HispanicSlammer, you can read minds. I'm going from Durango to Boulder and looks like you have a good route planned there. I did the Million Dollar Highway last summer on the DR650 but always fun and would gladly ride it again. My other potential route was Durango to Monte Vista then up to Fairplay and over.

I tried looking into potential problems with my phone and the overheating, didn't see any forcing shutdown, but you're correct the thing really warms up when running GPS. May turn it on and off according to need for GPS.
