New Oil Impressions - Also new Gagit I really like

So this weekend I needed to change my oil as well as get a new hose for my air compressor as mine busted last weekend.

I usually use Castrol 5w30 oil as my CCT's rattle like mad using cycle oil and the Castrol really helps and I can tell when I need to change my oil when my CCT starts making noise again. However, this time I wanted to try something new as with the Castrol I do notice some clutch slip from time to time. So I looked through all the forums and found a post about Delo 400 10w40. From what I read it seemed good so I picked up 1gal at Wally World and while I was there I picked up a new hose and this:

Let me tell you how nice my new air tool is. Checking my tire pressure with a separate Gage then airing it up was such a PITA. With this tool I simply click it on and it shows the pressure on the Gage. I adjust as needed and if I go over a tiny bit I simply push the button to release a bit of air. Checking/Adjusting my tire pressure is now a very simple task done in just a few seconds. I HIGHLY recommend spending the $12.

Now to the Oil Review - At first I was not happy with this oil because my CCT was noisy as hell. On first start up it was fine but as I backed out of the garage it started clattering and didn't stop for quite some time. When it did stop finally and I pulled in the clutch you would hear it want to start up again but then stop. So I was seriously going to go back to Wally World and get some Castrol and change it again. However, I decided to go for a long ride on Sat instead and when I fired her up Sun morning to go to the store there was no CCT noise. I rode around a bit and still no noise. So now I'm feeling better and I start to notice a few other things. My bike seemed to be running smoother. My shifts were noticeably smoother as well both on the up shift and the down shift. Coming to work this AM (Monday) there was no CCT noise and again the shifts were really nice with not so much clunking as with the Castrol. As it stands right now I'm very happy with the choice to switch. I can only assume because I let my oil drain for about 3 hours that it took a bit for the oil to work back up into the CCT to stop the noise. The overall smoothness of the bike is really nice. It might just be a placebo effect but I really don't believe so.

When my 2004 was new I ran Honda mineral oil the first year or two and then switched to Honda synthetic and then to the blend of Honda mineral/synthetic. I ran the last oil a little longer than I like and it was a bit dark when I changed it and I noticed the shifting was getting a little reluctant. I just put in Honda full synthetic and my bike seems to like it a lot and it shifts easier. I'm on my second CCT but so far there is no noise after about 14,000 miles. In all, my bike now has about 57,500 miles and has been very reliable. I like your tire filler upper thingy.

Did you hear the one about the logger turned surveyor and sometime wordsmith who resorted to using bad puns?

That air gauge and nozzle I need to get. Mine is a solid piece and getting air into the motorcycle tires is a PIA. Walmart you say? Looks like I need to get over there. :fing02:

I've had the same air gauge for years. Mine has a different end on it though- yours is straight & cylindrical, mine is round and angled... ? Combine it with 90� valve stems and you'll never hesitate to check your air again! :laughing6-hehe:

Your ccts should not make noise, the castrol wasnt really working if your ccts were telling you when to change the oil, if its working, you will NEVER have cct noise.

you need one more ride, and if no noise, then I say you found a solution.


you jumped quite a bit in film strength, 5w30 is way too thin for a bike IMO
I think the Delo is 15w40, ive run it for the last 10 to 15,000 miles, very usable.

Your ccts should not make noise, the castrol wasnt really working if your ccts were telling you when to change the oil, if its working, you will NEVER have cct noise.

I guess if you can find a tip the hose could be cut and the tip added. 5w30 might be a bit thin and is one of the reasons why I wanted to try another oil. My CCT gets pretty loud when it makes noise. The Castrol did real well at keeping them quite but as the oil lost it's viscosity my CCT would eventually start making noise on startup. Not sure why but that is how it went. There would be no noise for a few thousand miles then it might start.

I will continue to run it until time for the next change and at that time make a decision. Thus far I'm happy with the oil. The shift are smoother than before and the CCT is quite.

:+1: :+1: YESSSS...angled valve stems are the most excellent invention, ever!

Wondering if perhaps you are using oil with friction modifiers which could result in the clutch slipping.

The end is crimped on, so I think it's easier to find one with an angled head like mine:

I have had good luck with Delo 400 as well its cheap and works well, I use it during the winter in Az.

I run mobil 1 15w50 usually in my VFR in the summer because I live in the valley here in AZ and lately it has been 109-115 outside
when commuting to and from school. Plus I am able to get it from Napa a lot of the time for 4.99 a quart!

I have a small compressor with the cheap plastic yellow coiled hose. I want to upgrad to a longer, rubber hose and get an inflator nozzle that is more motorcycle friendly. the one I have is long (6-8 inches) and I have to snake it up and around the brake disc.

Appreciate the sentiment however, neither walmart.com or amazon.com ship to Canada. The .ca version of each does ship to Canada however they don't sell the item (as far as I can see).

My non axe-murdering friend V-Fore has very kindly offered to go the extra mile and bring one to me on the Kootenay tour. :cheerleader: Now I'm trying to lure him to bring it to BC in exchange for free lodging and copious libations but I'm not sure he's convinced yet.
