So far I bought the GoPro and have made a few ride vid's. Went from the suction cup to a sticky(to much bouncing with the suc-cup). Also I'm picking up some noise which I traced to where the windsreen connects to the front fairing, so now I'm in the process of making the screen quiet.

I've recorded in default 4 vid, will try 5 vid next. I've been able to transfer it from the GP to my Windows 7 computer, and there wasn't any problems doing the tranfer. That's as far as I've gotten so far. The next step, I guess is to edit the film. So what is the next step? should I use Windows Moviemaker or try another FREE service(I'd like to use my 5 setting for Hi-def? I've been looking though the web and Adobe came up as a source.

Here's some links I've been looking though.

http://lostindetail.dyinglight.de/?p=112

http://gopro.com/support/

http://download.cnet.com/Pazera-Free-MP4-to-AVI-Converter/3000-2194_4-10784027.html?tag=mncol%3B1

http://goprouser.freeforums.org/stickie-how-to-convert-to-avi-for-easy-editing-t212.html

I'd like to have a step by step what to do from camera to posting a hi-def vid. But if no one can give me the steps in order, than I'll work on one step at a time and ask for the next step as I go. Any help would be appreciated.

Step #1...... What service to edit?

#2

I went out and did a few runs using 5. The results are it works and will let me watch from the GoPro directly to my PC..... But everything runs slow (pic & sound). Each film is just over 8 min(which may be to long to handle?) Should I download and see if it works right (and should I cut the run time to under 8 min. on an editor ? )

#3

i think this is why most folks dont use the top setting on these things.

if it is MP4, then it will not work on MS Moviemaker.

#4

As far as the windscreen as a mounting base.... I find that it works as a sound magnifier, I was able to cut out the noises from the screen being connected to the fairing by putting a couple of pieces hard foam wedged in the air-port under the screen, one each near the sides. But I'll need to hear it with the film running at the correct speed to be sure. I'm thinking as much as I like it mounted there(visually), it's a sound problem(although I like the motor sounds from there, and that's with the sealed back on).

Yep you need to transfer it to your computer. The connection speed over USB is too slow to run HD stuff. Transfer it to your PC and it should be okay.

I got this right off the GoPro web-site.... Could use some help following these instructions?

"My PC will not playback the .mp4 video files.

•If using Windows Media Player or Movie Maker, make sure you download the latest HD-capable version and also download a H.264 decoder to update media or movie maker. CoreCodec CoreAVC is one company that offers a codec pack for h.264.

•VLC media player is another video media player program that you can download for free, which supports .mp4 h.264 files: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/"

you probably won't like my solution, but i ended up buying a mac so i could edit the HD files that my old windows xp lap top couldn't even play smoothly. vlc is a good program that i use on my mac so it will play windows media files...

I found myself a copy of Sony Vegas Pro 10, it handels the high end video no issue, even on a slower older PC. But its a $700 program to buy.

Sony Vegas Movie Studio would be a better fit if you are not doing anything fancy. Added bonus it's only ~$40

Very good, John. It appears you have quickly got a handle on the technology. Nice job editing; and adding comments..

What a dream of a road; lots of green, curvy and well maintained; and so few cars! I took a couple two hour rides this 4th of July weekend and never was able to escape the tourists in cages (with no concept of the purpose of slower traffic turnouts). But I digress. You displayed very smooth and consistent riding in your video, too. Kudos.

I'll tell you how to get rid of that rattle:

Put a strip od electrical tape on the base mount before you slide the little doohickie on it. (the sella retrofit little red plastic thingy for this now)

Also put 2 thicknesses of electrical tap right on the battery so it snugs up better when the back of the case is closed.

and viola.....case closed.

Here's my 1st attempt at posting a home made video. I'm working on getting rid of the bouncing and weird noises, and I have much better roads than this. One thing nice about this area of the country, is the lack of traffic on most back roads.

Nice video Monk, makes me want to go for a ride.... Now.

Cheers, BC

Nicely done! It looks like you are coming along real good learning how to use that thing. :fing02:

Now that I added some more anti-noise mod's(electric tape to batt and sticky base) thx to Timmy, I'm heading out to another local road. Working on 10 min films.

Thx for all the comments.

In case you don't know what the red thingy Timmy is talking about.. its coming with all the new cameras and accesories for 2011. mine have all been white rubber, haven't seen the red one yet, but acts as a lock once you slide the camera on to mount. they stop the camera from shaking and causing a click noise on all your videos.

Mork if you figure out how to cut back the whine of the engine and make is sound more like a bike and less like a 2 stroke blender let me know.

Just checked out your video Monk, looks a lot better than my first try did... :laughing6-hehe:

Did you use the suction cup to your windscreen? Because I can hear the rattle that rubber thing'y will stop, but its only for the stick on mounts not the suction cup that's why I asked how you set it up.

Looks like your on the r4 setting, I would switch to the r3 setting if your not going to use the full HD mode of r5, its a wider 170 view over the 120 with r4 doesn't change the quality of the video a whole lot but you see a lot more around you.

I've been playing around with the r5 (highest setting) and with a 16gig card the battery still dies before the card fills ups, so I'm thinking I'm going to stick with that and see how editing goes. Had it on my sailboard on the weekend, not much to see as there wasn't a whole lot of wind, but just wanted to try out different mount setups and so on. Once we get a windy day should make for some really good video.

there is a "skeleton case" for sale to try an up the volume.

Also, I have seen folks drill a 2 mm hole in the back of the case near the microphone to try an get better sound. (not waterproof any more)

Monk,

In terms of paid software, for about $50 you can get Adobe Premier which will let you edit and export just about anything. Not sure what version of windows you are running but have no problems with Windows 7 and the new Windows Media Player

Here is a quick short one I did last night with Adobe Premier for a buddy.

I exported it in several versions. I can even burn to a DVD & play on my PS3 or DVD player.

Love my GoPro's

Best way to mount is with the stick on mounts on a large body surface that does not flex, such as a side faring, tail section, etc. Windscreens flex too much. Also, mounting in front of windscreen can be tough as the camera will vibrate from the wind buffeting. Use the case back for the noise/sound level you want to achieve with either the waterproof case or the skeleton case. Try your different sound setting via the menu options.

Have fun

Yeh, I used the suction-cup on that one, the next one I just posted is mounted on the sticky base and all sound mod's were done except for the rubber thingy(just wanted to see if the home brew was working.
Thx, I start using the r3 setting next. "tharkun" said the Adobe thing works well for $50(if that's a one time cost I'll do it), I had looked into that some but wasn't sure about the thing being free or what.
So, how many min do you get out of the batt ? I bought an extra batt but I'm not sure if I'll lose what I'm recording if I changed it mid stream???

I was looking at that Adobe.... Is that a one time $50 for their editer ?

That's a nice vid you did, I for sure want to use HD......... I haven't excepted putting those sticky bases on everywhere yet, I'll succumb with time.

I haven't done this yet, but it looks like an "All free" step-by-step how-to on using GP-HD on Movie maker live.
It would be nice if someone better at using PC's than myself could give this a try and let us know how to do it.

I'm posting this Vid here not for the rider training but for the learning the GoPro's functions. I was trying to cut long sections out of the vid using the Win-Mov-Maker's edit tools. One is a Trim (which I couldn't get to work). Then tried the Split (Did work). Now I'd like some input on how to soften the gap between the splits(fade in-and-out) ???????? Also would like to know how the Trim works, Or if someone has found a how-to on using the Windows Movie Maker ??????
#36
to fade into a new clip, just "push" the clip to the left. click it, hold it down and to the left with it.  you will then see an overlapping blue ramp that indicates how slow or fast the fade is.  It will make more sense when you actually do it.
#37
I'm impressed with the encoding, I may have to pick up a GoPro soon. I played with my Sony HD cam on the bike a few years ago. It was all pre-VFR (and pre-decent-GoPro) but should apply. Up front the summary is: hard mount the camera to a frame component.  You'll see a lot of good video taken from down low.  I had pretty good success with a frame slider mount.  Close to your knee is also surprisingly convenient to reach the camera controls.   Unfortunately that puts the GoPro out into the wind, so you'll have to use an external microphone, tucked into quiet air (and also picking up your exhaust note).  Decoupling microphone mount from camera mount gives you much more flexibility. Looks like GoPro does not support external microphone yet, but if you're brave you can DIY.  Unfortunately these might be older models? I had to do something similar for my Sony - which uses a proprietary external hot shoe interface so I had to hack up an external microphone to make the connection. I ran stereo microphones to my AutoCom and then used its passenger output to hook into the camera.  That way I could mount the mics out of the wind and near the Remus.  Plus picked up the bike to bike chatter (had to warn my buddies when recording).  Note the AutoCom output had to be attenuated to be compatible with the unpowered microphone input - just a simple voltage divider did the trick. Added benefit - I enjoyed listening to my engine better than my iPod - I had a microphone volume adjustment so I could mix in as much as I wanted. Ultimately, I was not satisfied with the Sony - its HD encoder was not designed for fast paced movement of the entire image.  It had a funky wave effect, your GoPro looks far superior. Here's a movie FX guy's mount, no gyro and no shock mount.   Forgot what movie it was used in.   He said that shock mounts work until they reach their limits, but then they act like drunken sailors.  He asserts that the frame (or rider) are already shock mounted, and have enough mass to dampen vibration.

I'm not sure if you're talking about the trim or cut.... I've been working on how to use both.... It seems that you're telling me how to merge the cut sections?

a few things here,

not sure what type of computer you have or your specs - need more info.

i have the go pro and while i have a beefed up mac book pro because i teach adobe apps, i use the 1080 setting but, i havent burned to a dvd to watch on a big screen.
point in case  - no point of shooting 1080 if you are going to upload to youtube and watch on the laptop

also get the chest harness, works much better i think, the pov is different - personal taste

you can get adobe premier pro for free for 30 days, then the basic editing version is pretty cheap.

any problem just pm me

It seems like there was a comment in another thread that the GoPro needs to have something in its field of view that is moving in sync with the camera in order for the image stabilization to really work well.  In other words, you can't see any of the bike from your windscreen mount, so the GoPro has to work harder to have a frame of reference as to what is "shaking" and what is "not."

If you like where it is, you should stick with it (no pun intended), but if you get to the point where you can't tolerate the jitters anymore, you might try another mount where a fender, fairing, mirror, dash, or some part of the bike is in the picture.  Keep up the learnin' - I aim to get one of these camera one of these days too.   :fing02:

Thx. I just came from my garage, working on a new mounting location. It was suggested that I should find a place so part of my bike is being registered by the cameras' automated syncretisation thingy. So I was trying to set it up so I can get in the pic's frame what I'd like to see if I were watching a video. I want to see the signals/rpm/speed and if I get it closer to me it might get some lever action..... I'll give it a run tomorrow.
I'm using the suc-cup with a few extentions mounted close to the r-centre of the tank. ... If the noise/view work. I'll at least know where I want it, and if it bounces I'll have to come up with a more sturdy mount if needed.
#55
These two tapes are a test for sound and view, I'd like any input on what you think. It was suggested to put the bike in view. I'd like to show the instrument cluster as well as trying to get the hands in the pic but it doesn't seem to get low enough for the hands without losing the esthetics of the whole view. I'm using r3 with these shots. I mounted the GoPro with the suc-cup near the middle of the tank and up against the tank bag(also tethered tight to the bag) to check the movement. I'm hearing a sound that I think is not related to the GP mount, but the mc working parts or panels, etc. (I'm not concerned but curious). Any placement suggestions for showing the instrument cluster; Closer/lower/higher(more movement)/r-settings/etc.

If I were to just cut off the shutter button while riding in order to shorten the editing time...... Does it still eat as much battery as if it were running?

I know it can be programmed for one button... But that seems to involve shutting the camera off...Which is more time consuming and harder to tell if it's back on while riding.

I've discovered a few things that the cameras sound does, makes a good audio tool for finding noises....... In this case I went for a ride only wearing a half helmet and no air plugs, armed with the sounds I heard on the GoPro I rode while trying to figure out what I was hearing..... One was the cam-chain(which sounds fine)..... the other was body plastics...
Problems/lack of, solved.

Here is a video I made of some different roads in the area(working on putting clips together, and adding music). There's no music on this one(because of copywrite crap, I would have had to use YouTubes' canned music which doesn't have any thing I like..... So just turn on some music you like while watching )

I'd rather not have music either, I just wanted to learn how to mix it(which I did, it just wasn't excepted) At some point you'd think these artist would want the free exposure, widens the audience field.
Have you ever heard of John Prine....."Illegal smile","Dear Abby","Half a inch of water and you think you're going to drown" ?

I like A 48 better.  you see less of your tank bag and more dashboard.   :fing02:
Thx........ Also do you like having the bike in or out of the frame, all together?

I like some of the bike in the frame.
Thx...... I'll keep an eye on what others are doing.

Looks good John, sound comes out nicely, and picture looks good.

Still using Windows Movie maker to edit the videos.

THAT'S WHAT THAT'S FOR?!?!?!?!?!   :comp13:

AHHHH....thanks! I had no idea.   :cheerleader:

FrankoQ ...
Looks and sounds good except for the "Rice Krispies".......... Which can be taken care of by going back to post #17, & 23 of this thread and follow Tim&Dave's suggestions.

Now what setting were you using? I've been using r3(Dave's recommendation). And can I see a pic of your mounting attachments?

Good work with the Videos and the Mounting Monk.

I have been debating using a string or something as a saftey rope incase the mount gave out.

I have only used my GoPro once....I took a 1Hour and 45min long video of a series of roads I took on a long 10 hour day ride.

I mounted the Camera to the Tank using the Large Suction cup. I then went home and editted it using Windows Movie maker.

I left it on the default Video setting and plugging the GoPro Directly into my HD TV the video looks crisp and very nice.

I made 2 short clips using Movie maker but I used the "recommended settings" when i went to save it and I should have used the "HD Settings" instead. Quality isn't as good now.

Looks good..... Were you using the open back of your GoPro ? I could hear some wind noise, I've been using the closed back.

Thanks.  I will do those suggestions to take care of the rice krispies. lol.
I was using r5 for this test.  I'll try r3 and see how it looks.

For mounting, I'm using Ram mounts as follows:

for low angle on the left side:

For setting the camera to video the rider or forward facing:

I also need to fix the shaky video.  Yours do not have that.

Don't worry about using r3 if you are using r5..... I can't use r5 because I haven't been able to use/edit r5 with "Windows Movie Maker" ....... What are you using to edit?

As for the shakes, I've been keeping my mounts short, I tried a semi longer one on the tank, but strapped the upper portion to my tankbag to absorb the shakes.

I was using the Open back. It says to use it for under 100mph riding and I was usually around 80-120km/h.

The open back is good for low speed riding where it picks up the sound of the bike nicely...maybe next time I'll use the closed door?

I'm also using Win Movie Maker on a Dell XPS with a P4 processor. An old gaming desktop that still does the job.
It takes a while to "prep" the video, but once loaded, I can do editing fine.
Mmm... shorter mount... will try that but that will be hard for the low side angles.
I tried the suction cup on the side fairing and the thing bounced a lot and it looked like it would detach anytime.

I just came back from a 2 day ride to VA, WV, PA, and back to MD.
I ran out of battery while riding a very twisty section of Skyline dr.   :pissed:
Oh well.  I'm in the editing room and will post a video soon.

I've got to get me a sargent seat.

This one without the rice crispies sound effect.  :)

Looks like I better bookmark this thread. I just got a GoPro HD yesterday.

I've used one of the standard GoPro's once before, but didn't mess with editing the footage enough to really know what I was doing. I just cut a few pictures out of it and cut one lap out of a session during a track day. Hopefully I can figure this thing out and make some good videos.

FYI........... Don't do the auto delete from the camera until you have finished and stored the edited version......I did a 300 mile ride near the Smokies Sat and lost all the video........

The quality is down due to me trying to record a long vid and editing it, then trying to break it into parts that will be in the size excepted. Well it took a few different edit's to get to this point which degraded the quality..... I now know to do one section at a time and not to edit more than once. So anyway, I took a ride up to the BRPW area to a entry point of called Tuggels Gap (which is also a popular local MC Cafe' / motel ). I then U turned And went back down. I'll Have to go up there again and record everything in the correct MB's to show the whole ride next time. But quality aside It's a nice road........

Looks like a fun ride Monk, what did you do to clean up the sound? Or is that just because of where you mounted it? I still get a high pitched wine in mine.

You're right..the sound change is just from "where" it's mounted.

There's a road close by there that has a lot of turns (rt.40)that I need to go back and record. There's a lot of roads near the BRPW that are like the T-Mac area to play on.

Hi guys.

I just tested my Go Pro Hero 2 out yesterday on the VFR.

No problems with the suc-cup mount....  but i had the rattling!!!  Not a happy bunny!!

Seems after researching this that its the power and / or shutter buttons....   some have sent theirs back...many to receive a new camera with same problem.....  some have had no problems since....

Go Pro have also (almost) acknowledged this too.....  Not going to open mine up and fix it....  they should have sorted this out in production.

Will post vid link soon when i get it to youtube.....

Any thoughts / experiences to help would be well received....

Saw this on other site. Looks great. Bringing here for anyone interested:

This is what I am currently using for my Zumo 660. Solid as all hell and mounted to the frame. Most likely the least amount of vibes out of anything out there. JMO

I added 1/4-20 tapped holes to the center section to mount other things.
Ram ball, 12V outlet you decide.

Ok boys, had a happy fathers day and got a GoPro, a basic GoPro, not 3 or4....I know, not the best but still better than not a action camera at all. I wounder if anyone has used the cuped sticker mount on a helmet? Does it hold? Anyway I have a very first model GoPro, the one that use battery's and don't work that well or at all actually, but the mounts I have will fit and that's a bonus I think

I   have seen  the  GoPro  mounted  on  the  helmet  dozens of   times.  And  most  times  when  replayed  the  camera  angle  is  all wrong  and  most  of the  video  is   of  the  gas  tank.

I prefer a side mount to on top of the helmet - seems to give more of a rider's eye view and doesn't look so odd.  If using a suction cup it might be a good idea to have a lanyard on it in case the suction lets go.

#102

I do have a suction mount, but was thinking of a mount whit a sticker/tape for the helmet. Thanks for the input and ideas

From what I have seen on youtube, the chest harness seems to give a pretty good angle.  No actual experience with one though.

And  Walmart  sells  the  chest  strap  here.
