I just replaced my air filter with OEM after discovering a
mouse nest in my airbox. I'm okay with that (the OEM not the mouse nest Posted Image ), since the OEM clearly did an outstanding job--but it was $60 +tax from a local dealer. Ron Ayers has the OEM for about $48 shipped.
What I'm curious about, however, are the non-OEM, non K&N aftermarket options. A few places said they could order an aftermarket filter for me, but as it was Friday, it wouldn't be here until next Tuesday. As for K&N, I know some people swear by them, but I've read some testing that showed while the K&N flowed more air than OEM, it
didn't filter as well (which stands to reason).
In any case, I'm wondering if anyone has experience with the following aftermarket brands which make air filters for 5th and 6th gens (and possibly earlier VFRs too):
- Emgo (on eBay for $21 shipping included)
- HiFlo; and,
- BMC
If the Emgo is any good, for example, given that it's a third the cost of OEM, it might be worth using and changing twice a often.
I like my BMC filter. But all the aftermarket ones are the same general type as the K & N, so if you're worried about filtration, you probably won't want to go that route.
Some folks have made their own using the OEM filter, some cutting and epoxying, plus a sheet of bulk UNI filter foam.
I put a BMC in my 5th gen this year and so far I couldn't be happier. I haven't noticed anything negative yet.

The oem filter recomend is 12,000 mile , as long as you dont live in a Dust or sand bowl, they will easily run to 18,000 mile with no degrade that i can tell, so its a once a year deal. can they go longer 20,000 probably.
The options are making your own filter, which hell no my time is valuable
k@n you may or may not suck dirt, but you have to wash the thing, and lube, I have no time for that
so yeah $50 on a drop in OEM once per year , perfect !!
I'm getting one of my extra ones and cutting the paper out and going to a parts store and size matching one to fit in side. It's ridiculous how much oem filters cost.
This is more of a question than help but correct thread for it, I have read the custom filter thread to make a filter with a larger cross section than the K&N & BMC but I have been told so can't confirm the piper cross uses the full cross section like the VFRD posted custom made filter, can anyone confirm this.
I have had very good luck with the hiflofiltro brand of filters. They are quite a bit cheaper and are designed to be a oem drop in replacement. Used a couple in my bandit 1200, and also just got one for my VFR.
I think they're priced about half of oem.

Bike bandit has them for less than $20. I can't tell tell difference from Honda's gold plated one.
When I replaced my air filter I used an aftermarket EMGO air filter that was bought brand new on Ebay for $21 shipped. It looks identical to the OEM filter is working fine. I am very pleased for the price!!

Ditto on the EMGO. Hard to tell the difference from the OEM.
I like how UNI filters work (same flow and filtration as OEM, more or less), but I've also had two of them disintegrate after many years of use. So, they're disposable, just not as disposable as OEM (and you have to clean them)... :dry:
