Hi all, I'm hoping someone out there has had a similar issue to mine for a quick fix. Recently my 2004 with 28000 miles has been having a funky coolent issue. When cruising along the bike on average keeps a coolent temp of 180F traditionally with outside temps of about 70F. Recently I am having an issue where the coolent temp fluxuates from 175 to 210. When crusing along the temp fluxuates between 175 and 190, but when I stop at a light the temp quickly begins to climb to 200+. Once I get going again the temp drops pretty quickly and the temp also seems to drop when the fans kicks on as usual.
I just changed the coolent with Honda 50/50 blend and burped the system as described in the manual. Could this be a radiator cap issue (possibly leaking air into the system), air in the system that I can't purge, damaged water pump or possibly a malfunctioning temperature sensor? If it is air in the system I assume that it would need to be trapped by the sensor to see this issue. Is there a way to test the temp sensor to see if its working properly? Thanks for any help or thoughts.

This seems normal. My 98 behaves the same way. It never over heats but is very sensitive to ambient temperature, how hard I am riding it and airflow. The VFR has a larger operating temperature range than I would expect from a water cooled engine but it has been working that way since I got it 30K miles ago.

That's our beloved Veefers for ya!
There is a well known fix: switch the display to ambient temperature.
For a while my temp display on the '99 would cycle up and down in the acceptable range despite traveling at constant speed with no traffic in front of me.
Finally changed the thermostat and all has been well since!
The bike seems to get to operating temp just fine and if I watch the gauge I can see the temperature drop once the t-stat opens up. After that though there seems to be a problem keeping the temp steady.
Sounds like side mounted radiators to me.
Your not overheating or running to cold, and you see thermostat opening probably around 171 or so.
I say ride it.
Now that I think about it sounds like there is still air in the system. Try running the bike (on the side stand) with the rad cap off until the thermostat opens and see if you can get any air out. For what it's worth, my 5th gen will only fluctuate 2-3 degrees while I'm cruising.
