It is just easier to fit the APE manual cam chain tensioners, there only about $50 each & you won't have to pull the unit apart & replace rod to adjust or stuff up the tension. I fitted them to my 6th gen which with new Honda tensioners has always been fairly noisy, now has next no zero cam chain noise & I left them with more free play than needed to be safe (it's better there a little lose than to tight).
The mod would work but I havent heard of any VFRs jumping teeth on the cam sprockets like VTRs do and destroying themselves.
On the VTR you get very little warning when a cct lets go and bent valves are the usual result
To my knowledge the VFRs ccts just rattle when they fail, I havent heard of any bent valves but I could be wrong.
the APE manuals are a good solution, but a little tricky to set correctly.
The Honda OEM ones leave a bit to be desired, but if you are aware of the potential issues, they are not too bad.
Some people suggest replacing them as a maintenance item, say at 50000Kms.
But yeah, the rod up the middle would give peace of mind.
