I have a new 2008. I bought it a couple of months ago as a leftover from the dealer. I have had no issues of concern. It has a bit of surging in the lower RPM's but nothing terrible enough to prioritize a Powercommander over completely useless mods like adding some color here and there.
Coming off an old Goldwing, I don't see a dire need for enhancing the light output. They are really great stock. But, that is a judgment call. there are some folks who have done HID stuff on here and if you search around the threads you can find some information.
I have not paid for a big service yet so I could not tell you what to expect. But, the valves aren't schedules for adjust until 16,000 miles. Some folks don't even bother then.
I bought my '08 new(in '09 Mar) and have 39000 on it now, the only things I've had done for maint' are fluids/filters/oil/etc., and just in the last month, plugs(the old ones looked good in colour the gab was worn a little. As long as you leave the valves alone the cost is low, most things can be done by you. When you take it in just get the steering pressure checked and any other torque issues checked as well. My bike runs fine(smooth) after I got over 15000 miles on it, 6,700 kick in on the valves is smooth now as well. I have had the suspension upgraded for my wt./riding style (set up by Jamie Daugherty).
No gremlins for me so far.
This Spring i bought a brand new '08 at my local Honda shop. I have put 8000 miles on it so far. Thus far i am a happy camper. I traded in my VStrom 1000.
For the Honda i have spent money on tires and oil changes, period. I may do some front end suspension tuning, but not decided on that for sure yet. I do lots of multi day rides loaded for camping, and this is a sweet riding bike. I am pleased with the comfort and ride quality, especially the clean airstream. I get about 40 mpg so i easily go 200 miles per tank. I hope to ride it for a few years, then who knows?? FYI i got mine for $7k brand spankin new.........then bought the factory hard luggage, a $1k bit, but which is fantastic. Im happy!
