Gents, looking for some help as I am getting frustrated.. My '98 idles high at 1700-1800 rpm vice 1200-1400 (Cal Bike). I have checked all vacuum lines and no FI codes show when diagnostic plug is jumpered. Recently changed fuel tank but put same fuel pump/filter assembly inside. Bike had a history of running rich with black soot building up on stock exhaust outlet but always ran great. Still runs great with no probs except now it idles high. It was normal before fuel tank replacement. Checked all vacuum lines with air box off while changing tank hoping to find cause of rich condition. Everything looked fine and Trace helped QA install to ensure I didn't miss anything. Only thing I found while all was apart was my velocity stacks were not aligned properly inside airbox. The stacks each have two slits on one side and are installed in a certain order. They were improperly installed for the past 25000+ miles and the bike always ran fine except for the running rich condition. Now stacks are properly installed and bike idles high. I've also checked the throttle cable for binding as well as the choke cable (since choke "off" position and idle adjust are the same) and both are smooth and in good working order with the throttle visually checked and hitting throttle stop properly.
My 98 does NOT have the Auto Choke so the Wax issue described in a few threads is not it. Any and all advice will be considered and as always THANKS !
what I meant is when the throttle plates are closed, the idle should go down to normal--- if it doesn't, it almost has to mean that air is getting in from somewhere-- spraying either (sp) or quick start around the intake manifolds will reveal a leak. GL Jeff
Sounds like your fast idle is stuck. You can easily check this. Take off the tank and airbox, and check the idle plate; it should be resting against the idle screw. If the idle plate is not resting against the screw, your fast idle cable is probably sticking and holding it open.
I know you say "this is not it" but you need to verify this with your eyes.

Yeah, that was my first thought as well. Maybe the lever is moving fine, but the cable is not?
Second thought was vacuum hose.

Yeah, we're gonna have a look at them, too, maybe tighten the clamps. I sprayed a little gasoline around under the airbox yesterday, and the idle zoomed to 2000 from 1700, so that might mean something. Or....the SV bleed holes picked up the fumes and jacked the revs. When we get the airbox off this weekend, we'll have ANOTHER careful look at all the tubing and do some gas spraying. We were ultra-careful putting it back together a week ago when we had it apart for other work and I'm sure there's no open vacuum hoses hanging in the breeze (shut-up BR!). But there could be a cracked hose down in the valley of the manifold. That stuff is 12 years old....
Kaldek, Thanks but idle cable has been visually checked and it is seating against the screw properly when choke is in "off" I can back the idle screw out and the plate bottoms on the idle adjust/starter valve assembly.
Monk, I thought of that but didn't think that would be a good use of your tax dollars... :tongue:
IntAceptor and Samaki, Only took off airbox and checked lines and idle was good before I rearranged the velocity stacks in the airbox. Didn't pull throttle bodies off so doubt the Orings went bad and water temp gauge works fine on display so that should rule that out unless there is a different source you speak of.

Allow me to retort! Because you mentioned me in your opening post, according to the Rules Of The Internet (written by Al Gore!), doing that automatically halts any claim that you have that I've "hijacked" anything. It's simply impossible for me to hijack a thread that I technically have ownership in, due to the fact that such secondary ownership was granted pro forma by you, the holder of primary ownership. Who was it who called mq105 Mikey today to shame him into digging through his PACKED TO THE RAFTERS storage unit up there in Florence and find his Motion Pro synch tool and FedEx it to my house by this Saturday? Who? You? NO! :pissed: Me? Yes, indeedy. :happy: Now, whether he finds it or not is another matter, since he already looked for it once sometime last year. He knows it's there, but buried in a box somewhere in the stacks.
Now leave me alone. I have to go back to adjusting the rabbit ears on my three HD televisions....... :musik20:
