I posted a week or so ago about getting my first VFR. She needed tires and new clutch plates for sure. While I had the wheels off I went ahead and put new pads all around, flushed the brake and clutch lines, replaced air filter, and flushed and refilled the coolant. I also changed the oil and filter, rode 50 miles and did it again to make sure all the crap from the burned out clutch plates and the bit of milky oil I had was cleaned out. I had called my local Honda dealer about a gasket I needed and found out that in 2010 a valve had been replaced and that the recall work had already been done on the wiring harnesses. I am making an assumption that when they replaced a valve that they probably checked the clearances on the others while in there. I hope so anyway.
My first ride was awesome and I think I made a great choice buying this bike. I haven't ridden with any regularity in 20 plus years and although I have heard comments about the 800's not being very powerful I would respectfully disagree. Granted the last bike I had was only a 400cc but this VFR has PLENTY of power and is very quick. I rode around the block a few times to get the feel of her and then took a 10 mile jaunt across town. A friend and I checked out a few bike shops and then we got out on the beltway. I must admit I was a tad nervous but after a few mins I was fine. We cruised at about 70 mph most of the time but I took her up to about 85 shortly when I had some room just see how she would do. My buddy said when I passed him that she looked super smooth and tight which made me feel pretty good. He rides a "busa" that he has wrecked severely a few times and I think he was slightly green eyed looking at how nice my VFR looked.
To wrap it up she ran flawlessly both around town and at hwy speeds and I am very pleased. The only slight gripe I could possibly muster is that at 85mph there is a fair amount of wind resistance/buffeting. I have ordered a MRA X sheild spoiler in hopes it will help with future road trips I have planned.
I also wanted to mention having this forum for maintenance tips and product reviews has been fantastic! Next project is to replace fork seals and oil and put a new chain and sprockets on. I should be set for quite a few miles after that.
