OEM Luggage waterproofness

I havent done any riding in the rain with the OEM luggage yet. Ive noticed there isnt really much of a seal around where they close. just wondering really how waterproof the bags are. If im planning on riding in the rain should I get some sort of liner for them or throw everything in trash bags?

They seal against a rubber o-ring when they shut. I've ridden through literally day after day of downpour and haven't had even a drop get into the bags. They're good!

For backup I've bought extra big ziplock bags from Safeway and put clothes and electronics in those. They are great for separating dirty laundry from the clean when you're on longer road trips.

I have found mine to be very waterproof, no problems with contents getting wet at all.  Until I open them while they're still wet, then stuff gets wet...... :pissed:

ZIPs and/or Garbage bags.....why not?

They hold out the water great while riding, I've done many a kilometer is heavy rain.  Left side bag can let in a few dribbles when sitting on the side-stand in heavy rain.

I don't get any in mine, even when I'm washing and hosing down the bike.

I use mine as pontoons and they work fine.

I had a problem on one trip because I had them so loaded that the seals didn't work.  Knowing that I would probably do that again, I invested in some of these:

I actually bought mine at Cabela's, (I have to patronize in state businesses...) but they quit carrying them.

Yeah, the OEM saddle bags are good even riding in the rain.
But I don't think they has the rubber O-ring around the bag.

Look inside where the clamshell meets. There's an o-ring.

Good sized rubber ring all the way around actually.

Back when I used soft bags, I started putting my gear in large Ziplock freezer bags to keep it dry.  That evolved into packing a day's gear (shorts, socks, tee) into a Ziplock to make it easier to grab and go in the morning.  Works so well that I still do this with my hard bags, and get the backup waterproofing.

A couple years ago, I got stuck in an all day rain coming back from a trip. The bags were great, not a drop inside.
