Engine flat past 10,000 rpm?

First of all, new to the VFR, Not new to riding. I've noticed the in first and second gear that the power curve goes flat above 10,000 rpm. My question is, is this just the way the power curve runs, or is there something I need to get looked at? BTW, I am the happy owner of a Black 06 VFR 800 that I purchased with 6900 miles in excellent condition for a highway robbery price. Wish I would have bought one sooner instead of HD's all these past years.

Peak power is at 10,500 rpms, bud.

I usually try to time my shifts for around 10-10.5k rpms when in "haul ass mode".  You don't do yourself any favors by banging off the rev limiter as you've already gone past peak power.

Wasn't trying to bang the limiter, just noticed that it kinda fell off after 10k. I usually shift around there when riding hard, but was wondering If that was the norm. My bikes in the past didn't fall flat like that, so it was unusual to me. Keep in mind that my past rides include 3 harley davidsons, a 95 GSXR 750, and the Blue Beast a 07 ZX14 that had full Yosh exhaust, power commander, butterflies removed, K&N, and was dyno tuned (210 hp at rear wheel). Out of all, I have to say I like the VFR the most, although at times I do miss the almost unlimited power of the ZX14.

I dont know about power falling off, power should stay solidly there even at 11,000 rpm. Is the Vtech working?  that would be the only thing I could think of that would cause pwer to really fall off in that region.

However an 06 with 6,000 miles, maybe it has some fuel injector clogging from sitting

Vtec works fine. I thought about running some injector cleaner through it, just didn't know if it was the norm for the power to flatten out like that. After reading magoo's post it kinda makes sense to me. Just thought it should pull till around 12k. Guess I'll just have to buy the power commander and exhaust sooner.

Howdy,

If you search around on this sight for references to dyno results for 6th gens, you will find that your bike is normal. At the highest rpms, you are past the peak torque, and hp begins to tail off.
Ride it and have fun. If I ever turn 11K on mine it is by accident, cause it is time for the next gear. I find the motor to really be sweet between 7K and 10.5K, if you can run it there in the twists, you will find yourself pleasantly occupied!
Give Shady Valley, TN a ride!

Redline is 12,500 , but I find the bike usable to 11,500 with no sign off , it pulls and stays strong in that area.  are you in over drive(6th gear) when you have this issue?

The 10,500 flat spot on 5th & 6th stock bikes is fairly common. There's plenty of dyno graphs that show this. - If you look at other dyno graphs with the addtion of full flow filter, slip-on exhaust and PC the flat spot goes away. It did on mine - it just pulls to redline, no problem

I actually notice the fall off in first and second. I haven't twisted that high in 5th or 6th as of yet. I ride twisty roads all the time, and keep it in the 6500 to 10k range. Just happened to be on one of the few straight roads in E.TN when I noticed the fall off. But, as has been stated in previous posts, it would be past peak power at that point. I am new to the VTEC motor and wasn't aware of the power curve dropping like it does at higher revs. My last bike was a 07 ZX14 that had no fall off in power unless you turned it off. Thanks for all the info guys.

Mac, where is Shady Valley at? I usually know most of the good riding areas around here. Heading up to the Gap tomorrow for some fun. Havent been up there in a while (a whole 2 weeks) and am having withdrawals. I do get to ride the Devils Triangle all the as time I grew up there and still have family up on the mountain.

Ive only tried to hit the rev limiter one time just to see if it was working (where the Motor will go into a (PINg Ping Ping mode), that was in first gear , It was very quick and did happens around that 12500 rpm range, so the design will do it. But like a say I can blow into 11,500 or higher without any stall out feel, and Im totally stock.

Since you see an obvious issue over 10,000 rpm, Thats not normal from my experience. while I cant hit max rpm in 6th gear, and usually struggle in speed after about 140 or 145, its geared alittle too tall in 6th for that.

Might check Airfilter too area too.

Many here have recommended a can of Seafoam or two (in succession, not all at once) to do any light clean up of the fuel system.  May be just what you need for a bike that seems to have not been ridden much.

Howdy,

Here is the requested addendum to the thread jack:

Shady Valley is on Hwy 421, before you get to Mountain City, TN. Try the linky. It is the local version of Deals Gap. I'll pass through there after church, today.

I can not say from experience, but my guess is that the top speed of my bike would be reached in 5th gear, some where around 150 mph. 6th gear might go a little faster, but there just ain't enough road around here to find out. 3rd gear at 10.5k rpm is somewhere in the neighborhood of 120, and I am usually looking for the brakes before then. Stock motor, air box, this Micron pipes for weight savings, and rumble. No fancy tune.
I just don't need a drag bike.

Thanks Mac. I'm heading up to the Gap today with a friend of mine. I know where your talking about now, I used to do work for Rite Aid pharmacies and one of my stores was in Mountain city. Never rode it, but was a nice drive up to there from Elizabethton.
