Looking for Inexpensive way to provide 6th gen VFR passenger with lower back support

Hi VFR peeps. i have a 2002 vfr 800 (with a stock seat in great condition) and just want to provide my passenger with some sort of lower back support for as little $ as possible. I'd love to get a corbin lady / gunfighter with the 'oval' type backrest, but the price is about $660 plus tax and shipping ... prob close to $800 all told. So I am looking for ANY cheaper option. I wonder if there is an inexpensive add-on backrest that works with a stock seat?!? Heck I could fashion one perhaps out of some other model backrest ... anyone ever do that? Or if I could get the 2-part Corbin 'Lady / Gunfighter' seat+backrest package at some significant discount (used?) I would but so far this classified, VFRD, ebay and craigslist don't have a listing. Or if any other company offers a bolt-on backrest for that bike, that'd be great.

Any ideas?

By the way i'm hoping to do some touring this year in the west / NW US if anyone is interested... probably should post that on a different forum...

SEB had an idea a few years ago of fabricating a sissy bar that attached to the grab handle mount points and used some kind of steering wheel pad for karting from a JC Whitney catalog.

Yes, I did. I'll try and find the pics later today. I stopped using it when I got the top case.

ill sell you my corbin with backrest. its not the oval backrest but its the bigger one. looks funky but my wife likes the bigger backrest better. ide be willing to part with it for $400 plus shipping. if that interests you.

FInd a used top case and rack and it comes with a backrest on the luggage. To be honest, my spouse rides a lot on the back of the bike and never touches the backrest as it is too far back to be comfortable. I would guess that the Corbin one is the same - the natural position for the pillion is leaning forward not back like on a Goldwing or Cruiser.

Made this up and it was just the right size for my Cortech tail bag. Worked great. Follow the link to go to an album that has pics of the rest by itself, and the hardware I used.

Very nice.  I think your fabricated backrest overall looks better than the Corbin backrest because your version matches the body lines better plus it looks sturdier.  I like the idea of attaching the tail bag to the backrest, looks good.

thanks everyone for all the input.  yes i goofed and posted the inquiry in more than one place.  long story but now I get it (i'm a newbie at forums in general sorry).  anyhoooo, I bought a custom backreast similar to what SEBSPEED made (from the nicest VFRD / VFRW member in Canada), and with a few seat mods it mounts OK.  i'll probably mod the backrest a bit (angle, padding) and it should work well.  Might even make a small bag for the back of it as i see SEBSPEED did - very nice by the way.

Also by the by ... I noticed from the pics that no one seems to have turned their rear-handles around.  Just in case anf FYI, if ya switch them left-to-right, they 'point forward' and the rider can use them for alternate grips (when she's not got her arms around you).  Seems like it'll work out well, unless i'm missing something.  If i get an extra nanosecond before /during the trip i'll take a photo and post it.  Mostly thanks for all the kind info!
