My 02 VFR runs what i think is too warm. Once it gets up to fan "on" temps it does not go below 210. So when ever i am not going over 60 its so damn hot on the bike. The fan is always turning on to keep the bike below 223, which is around when the fan kicks on. I know that cars run good around 190 and my other bikes, SuperHawk, CBR F2, never felt this warm when i am riding. What should i look into? Or is this normal for VFRs.

Pretty normal for stop and go traffic in the summer. Once out on the open road at speed it should come down after awhile but it does take some time.
When was the last time the cooling system was flushed and filled with new coolant? That may help some but those temps you quoted are not out of line for a VFR.

Thanks so much for posting this! It's only around 75-78 in the Pacific Northwest and I've been seeing the same thing, fan comes on at 223/224 and runs hot. I always worry about over heating and have Engine Ice as coolant yet it's still running those numbers.
So happy to see the responses that this is normal and nothing to really worry about as I'm planning a road trip this Labor Day and will have a 15 hour day...
My 06 will hit 220ish in stop and go traffic on a hot summers day, and it'll hit that high again when playing in the twisties if I'm staying in the vtec range. Once on the highway though, cruising at 75-85mph with in a few minutes she will always drop to 177-185ish and stay there.
Keep in mind if you're riding in traffic that you need to leave plenty of space in front of you (once you're really moving, that is) to get additional airflow to the engine. Otherwise the enging temp will stay higher than it normally does.
Of course, leaving space in front of you in traffic is the safe thing to do anyway, but it has the added benefit of helping to keep your bike's engine a little cooler, too. :wink:
The Vtec VFR's are designed to run leaner and hotter than most bikes. Fan set point on is 220 and off around 200.
I've seen mid 240's when pushing hard on a hot day, but Honda doesn't consider it running HOT until over 250. At that point the temp indicator will start to flash red, a good time to chill out! :tongue:
Just be sure your system is burped properly and ride the thing! :tour:
I've ridden mine 3 years with no issues. I agree with what has been said about just changing the temp display to air temp. If the bike is really overheating the air temp display will change to show the engine temperature. At least thats what the manual for my '07 says.
SlexMan, Check you coolent mixture. My 07 ran real hot and when I checked the coolent, it hadn't been mixed with distilled water. It was 100% coolent. After replacing it with a 50/50 mix, it ran a lot cooler. I also installed a switch to bypass the thermostat so I could turn on the fan before the temp got to high.
I'm normally hitting 108c thats about 226F here in the tropics.....reason we feel the bike is hotter is because both the radiators are very near to our knees.....anyone tried Liquid Moly oil based coolants?
The temps you're seeing are pretty standard for your VFR, especially if you're moving slower than 50-60 mph. When riding aggressively, in the mountains, I've seen my engine/coolant temp get up to 138.
Also live in the Pacific northwest. I too will be in the 220 range when lower than 35 mph. However, When i ride in mid 40 degree F temps and its raining out or the roads are wet my bike wont heat up past 145 degrees!!! I assume its a faulty thermostat but i aint digging into the engine for that...Unless other people have this issue.

Thermostat partially open as you indicated. When it got cold around here, my 5th gen didn't go past 140F and my fuel mileage took a dive. I changed the thermostat and all is well again.
