Am I a jerk for not waving at trikes?

I always wave at other motorcyclists, whether they are on a sport bike, cruiser, touring bike, etc. In the past few years there has been a large increase in the number of 'trikes', either conversion or a Can Am style. I don't feel any camaraderie with these people, so am I a jerk if I don't wave at them???

Everyone has their peeves, I dont wave at Headlight modulators, but I would a 3 wheeler more than likely, Headlight modulaters just Piss me off.

Keep in mind, some of the trike riders have medical conditions and riding a trike is the only way they can ride. Heck, I'll even wave to scooters if they wave first. However, they only get the 1 finger wave, not the two. :tongue:

Yes.  One of the finest people and riders I know now rides a CanAm after being run over by a semi.  It takes basically no effort to toss a friendly wave, why the hell not do it?

Darn new scooters look like motorcycles from the front end. Usually wave before I realize. Waved to a cop the other day. Generally do that anyway if on 2.
When I first moved to GA I was surprised how many cruiser riders waved to me. Never happens in Fla. Now I'm seeing fewer waves from cruisers these days.

I wave to bikes, trikes, scooters and it makes no difference if they wave first or I do.
I think it makes their day for a scooter rider ro be waved at.

FWIW, when on the VFR, just about everyone waves, both cruisers and sportbikes.
When on the Nighthawk, most cruisers wave but sport bikes almost totally ignore me. Probably less than half return the wave.

For me it's hard to resist waving to anyone on a "bike" no matter number of wheels or style. But I'll admit recently I'm starting to wonder if waving is a good thing. Friendly for sure, but encouraging folks to take their hand off the bars - not so good. 99% of the time it's no issue - but who knows how competent the other rider is...  And I know sometimes I don't wave cause I'm sort of busy keeping my own line or monitoring my own surroundings. Don't mean to discourage anyone from waving.

If I don't wave, due to potential safety issue, I'll at least give a head nod.

What gets me is that when I first starting riding motorcycles some 30 years ago, I recall EVERY motorcycle rider waved to one another, Harley to Honda, Sportbike to Cruiser, Dual-Sport to Chopper, etc.. Now it seems that there are some riders that are too cool to even acknowledge you, let alone give you a wave, unless you fall into their "classification" (I'm guessing). Personally I try and wave at all two wheel riders, but like the fore mentioned safety reason, I'll typically head nod at the three wheeler and sometimes scooter riders if not already waved to. Like someone said before, some scooters look a like like sport bikes from the front.

I had this lady who said nobody ever waved at her. Then I saw her picture riding on the bike. Is it a man or woman, what is it?

I think thats why nobody waved, they couldnt fiqure out what it was riding the bike, looked like a Michelin man, yet non Male, kinda freekish!.

I transfered to Florida Pan handle for 1 year and nobody waved, but after a couple months, I noticed everyone was waving. I think they just never seen the wave before, but adapted quickly.

I wave at everybody, no matter what they ride, and without considering if they will wave back or not. Why can't we all get along??

I wave with both hands while in the middle of a corner that I took too hot--to cagers.

Edit--ask yourself this, if you were on the trike and someone didn't wave back, would you think they are a jerk or snobby? I probably would, after I put both hands back on the bars.

I wave to m'cy riders, trike riders, and even bicycle riders.

I wave at all two wheelers. Almost always get a return wave. Scooter riders often seem surprised when I wave.

So you are judging these people from just the type of transportation that they are currently operating?  I've rode over two thousand miles that I've spread between two different 50cc scooters.  I've had people tell me get a real bike, or says that's cute, but little do they know that I have three other full-size motorcycles sitting at home in my garage.  But from the statement you wrote above, if you see me on one of my scooters you don't feel any camaraderie with me?  Get off your high horse and give the other folks a wave if it's safe to do so.

I wave at everybody.  I am in perpetual motion - sportbikes, Harleys, semis, Type A RVs, Humvees, everything I see.  I am very busy waving.

@Hondalover - "So you are judging these people from just the type of transportation that they are currently operating?"  I'm sorry this upsets you, but aren't you judging me based on who I wave to???  OK, a little background on me...  I commute 110 miles per day on my VFR, plus weekend rides, plus vacation.  I've put on almost 8,000 miles since Memorial day.  Where I live there are TONS of bikes and I wave... a lot.  But where do I draw the line?  "Get off your high horse and give the other folks a wave if it's safe to do so"  No, I choose not to -  I can't wave at everyone and I guess I'd rather be considered a jerk than feel obligated to do something that I don't want to.

I wave even if a pedestrian waves at me.
The only caveat is, it has to be safe and comfortable for me to do.  If a wave throws me out of my rhythm, I don't wave and don't feel bad about it.

I wave at everyone but cages & scooters, unless they wave first. Reason I don't wave at scooters is because to many of them here in this part of Indiana, are complete idiots, & or do not have an operator's license of any kind. Around here we call scooters liquor cicle's!

The solution for people who are tired of waving is simple....





Loosen the left mirror bolts to the point they are just holding but flap like crazy,

pull an old glove -palm forward facing- over the mirror

affix with duct tape




see it wave none stop..........   :owned:

Heck, all I can see w/ the mirrows is my damn elbows, might as well hang a glove off of them...  May I should get some mirror extenders???

What if you wave at another rider and he waves back....then flies into the bushes because he could not make the next turn with one hand waving back to you......might you be sued by this unfortunate rider for injury and damages?? I think yes, in some cases in this very litigious society we live in....

I saw one of those carbon fiber bikes today....  Took me a half mile to shake the image out of memory.

I dont wave in city traffic either or anytime there's something more important to deal with, or if there's a big rally in town and every ten feet there's a motorcycle out on the road, that gets tiring real quick.  But on the open road with not too much going on, if I meet an isolated sportbike or cruiser or a couple, then I'll wave. But bicycles and scooters do take a back seat . when it comes to waving probablity.

But you only said you refuse to wave at 3 wheelers in your opening statement

Well, YOU did ask to be judged.  So there is really no reason to get upset when my thoughts differ from yours.  But I really don't think a lack of wave for a certain type of transportation would catagorize you as a jerk.  Maybe prejudice, but not a jerk.  As for my wave practices, I typically wave at all cyclist when just running around.  While commuting I'm running in the opposite direction of traffic.  So during those times I typically am just a return waver so as not to distract the other rider who may feel obligated to return a wave if I were to start the wave.
