From time to time, my 02 VFR would shut off after a hard acceleration. This happens right when I let go of the throttle and squeeze the clutch to up shift. As I let go of the clutch, the bike would take a nose dive (like hard breaking) because the engine had died. Normally, I would squeeze the clutch again to let the bike coast down to a reasonable speed then let the clutch out again. This would then "kick start" the engine to life. It is somewhat dangerous as I did not anticipate the nose dive, and neither did the cager behind me.
I have had the bike for about 5500 miles (but the bike itself has 14K) and have only experienced this about 5 times. But every time it happened, it is always right after I accelerated hard to about 6000 - 7000 rpm. I know that's nothing for this bike but that's plenty for me.
So ... what the heck is going on? I don't think it's the injectors because if it is then i would have experienced more shutting off. Fuel pump maybe? Hope not! Appreciate any feedback if anyone had experienced this.
I've had the same problem, when I researched it on several forums I found this was a common thing with 6th gens. It happens when hard pulling 1st gear and then pulling in the clutch. Since reading that, I am careful to ease out the throttle rather than abruptly clutching when I do a quick 1st gear pull or (more commonly) do a quick shift to second and pull that gear instead. I have had very few issues since I started doing this.

Ive never heard of this issue, certainly not seen it on mine. Since it sounds like it happens around the vtech area, are you running a power commander, if so take it off, if not put one on, sounds like a fueling issue.
Thanks all for replying. I am not running a PC with this bike. It is bone stock. Folks on VFRworld are suggesting Sea Foam treatment. Come to think of it, I have experienced a slight hesitation every now and then while just cruising at speed - feels like I was letting go of throttle a bit. Could be bad fuel, could be dirty injectors. A can of Sea Foam won't hurt.

Ive never ran sea foam(whats in it?), but I know many mc riders swear by it(that still hasnt swayed me to try it). Techron stuff has a good reputation. Ive probably used a 8 oz or so of fuel injector cleaner in 100,000 miles on the vfr as a preventative. Leaded race fuel is my main cleaner, eating all that Pump Crap fuel.

I never heard of it either, but it seems to be around for some time and has done many a motorists a bit of good.
I doubt it is a fuel related problem, electronics probably and related to the vtec transition as stated by spud. Did you get an FI light warning on the dash, perhaps you can go back and check if there is a code related to the issue stored in the ECM?
I've had my '02 die, but it's never been on hard-throttle upshifts, it's always when shifting down. Usually when I'm planning on engine braking.
No clue what's causing it, but I have had good service from SeaFoam. By no means a cure-all, but does help clean things up a bit.
Used it on many different vehicles, diesel and gasoline, boats, motorcycles, weed-eaters, lawn mowers, all with good results.
Not sure what all is in it, but it is petroleum based. Does double duty as a fuel stabilizer too.
Had the same issue on my 02.
It went away completely after upgrading my electrical system.
It may or may not have been due to upgrades themselves, but I also cleaned and tightened up all connections, especially grounds to the frame.
Try it - Unplug and clean all connectors and undo, clean, retighten grounds.
Each time this has happened to my bike it's been electrical related. Last time - only 3 months ago - it was a dead stator that appeared to be causing it.
Weird stuff alright...
I have had the problem when shifting down, problem went away as soon as I replaced the R/R
