I am planning to ride down to phillip island from sydney over 2 days for the motogp weekend.
It's about 1000km via the coastal roads route, including some beautiful scenery :)
it will be a leisurely ride, as the police will be out in force, with lots of speed traps for all the riders coming down for the motogp.
Here is a map with some proposed rest stops ( edit: the embed map code didn't work)
The plan will be: 1) leave sydney in the morning. (wednesday oct 16) 2) coffee break at woolongong (probably go via the national park to get there?) 3) Lunch somewhere around Ulladulla
4) continue on through to bega, and have another break.
5) stop at eden, grab some food for dinner and stay, or then go to somewhere in the ben boyd national park to camp the night.
6) Thursday, leave in the AM, drive through the national park to lakes entrance.
7) stop at taralgon for lunch
8) continue on, and end up at the island. claim a camp site and get set up for the weekend.
9) open that beer.
I wonder what the odds are of me crating my bike, shipping it and getting there in time to join . . . yeah - probably not. I guess you'll have to enjoy for the rest of us! Phillip Island has always been my favorite venue to watch M/C racing. Looks like a fun trip.
Here we go, day 1, Sydney to Bright, the best bits are from B onwards, the Sydenu to CBR is boring slab. You could also skip Canberra and go to Gundagain then down thru Tumut to Kiandra, len follow the map to Tumbaraumba and beyond:
If you have a fraction more time, you can get from Sydney to Canberra, with almost no time on the Hume as well (and the Hume isn't the Doom Boreway for nothing). Through Bowral and the Highland Way (top road) then from Marulan to south of Lake George See this link

That's pretty much the same route that I took to the GP in '03.
It looks like you'll have a great ride. Melbourne and Sydney are further apart than I thought, but even though I just returned from my own MotoGP trek I'd love to tag along. Oh well, there is always next year.
If it was me (& I wish it was) I'd head west & take the Bell Line of roads, (although I know getting through Richmond from Sydney is a major pain in the arse) On to Bathurst/Blayney & Cowra & then choose either Wagga 0r Gundagai for getting to Albury. I love riding those roads & at that time of year its magic, but it would put a dent in your time. You will be to sleep deprived & hung over to that route on the trip back..
