I did the Spiegler/LSL bar conversion last year with the Honda 919/599 bars, and added BLS lowering blocks as well. I still get quite a bit of pain in my wrists and neck - I'm short with stubby arms so the reach is still a bit much for me as after 30 or 40 miles things start to get to me. I was interested in this type of Police bar kit:[image: hbk604a.jpg]
Since I already have the riser I would just need a taller more swept back bar and longer hoses/cables. Has anyone here actually done this? Do I just source ST1300 cables and start looking at small cruiser handlebars, or can someone who has done this recommend a specific bar? Thanks!
Meant to post that - sorry. They show a 'Type 4' kit which is the bar only, predrilled. I could get that and hoses/cables locally. Don't know how much shipping from Japan would be though.
I don't know. I didn't see that fine print, but assumed that as the bars had a longer sweep back that it wouldn't need it. Would be nice if they sold the police screen as well. Maybe these can't be rotated that far back without redrilling, which wouldn't be a problem.
I bought an LSL kit for a Ninja 500 and you can put together any kit you want for your specific bike. Just buy the correct base that the bar attaches to and the rest you can pick and choose by part. They will even do custom length brake lines. As for the throttle cables, that I don't have an aswer for. You will need to research to see if the ends will mate up to your bike but if they do I don't see a reason why that kit wouldn't work for you.
I do recommend you getting the steel bar versus the aluminum one because the first time you drop your bike the aluminum one will bend making it useless. That and bar end weights as well as without them the bar will vibrate like crazy making your hands numb. Then you will have to deal with the wind screen clearance issues as well. It won't be cheap but LSL makes quality stuff and their customer support is excellent. Before ordering this from Japan I would talk to the US reps first as they make the parts right there in the shop so will be able to guide you to the right pars and put the kit together right there in a few days.
You might head over to www.st-owners.com and join up with the forum. Then ask your question there as several of those guys have or have had VFR's. You might get an answer to the throttle cable question...
It is very easy to get custom-length brake and clutch lines made. I've used HEL in the USA before--good service. Getting cables made is a bit harder, but I know places like Venhill in the UK do them, so I'm sure somebody in the 'States does as well.
The VFR800Fi (RC49) police top fairing is different than the civilian RC46--shorter, with no mirror mounts, to clear the tall bars, I imagine. I have never seen any photos of the police bike with the wheel turned fully, but this pic gives you an idea:

You'd also have to cut down the screen, I suspect. You might get away with keeping the fairing mirrors if you went for a bit lower bars...
This video shows Japanese LEO spec 5th gens in a riding training/demonstration session. It might give some additional idea of top fairing clearances while turning with the police bars.
Also, it seems to dispel the myth that the VFR is "too heavy", "not sporty enough" or "the riding position is too upright" to be a real sport bike. What It really boils down to is the rider . . . It's really interesting to watch where they point their heads as they ride.
Sooooo......anyone know an answer on the ST1300 hoses and cables?
Dale,
ST cables and it's only later model ST's and I don't know which years are longer than stock VFR cables, but at best there only 2" longer which isn't a lot for this type mod.
Older ST cables are the same length as VFR's(like mid 90's) so Do research before ordering or just have 4" longer cables made.
You could do some research via Japanese forums. I did a quick search and the first one that came up was SBKJapan.com. It isn't heavily populated, but it is in English and they or another forum might be able to point you in the right direction to get the same parts used on the LEO bikes.
Thanks for all the input. I didn't realize we had different fairings from Police bikes. Just makes the challenge more interesting I guess. I've watched a lot of Japanese police riding videos - crazy skills! There are some ST1300 vids too, I think. The photo of the police bike above is interesting in that they used Harley style side bags on the rear. I'll explore getting hoses and cables made. Cheers all.
I am pretty sure those bags are made by Shoei. A good point that was brought up: why limit yourself to the Honda "police bars" you have a wonderland of options:
