Side Stand Bolt

Ok, my Harley Bolt fell out.  It is bolt number 14 in this diagram.

Called my local Honda dealer and the Honda part is $6.56.  Wut the hail???  I looked it up on Fastenal and the same bolt, black oxide coated 10mm X 26mm with 1.25 thread pitch.  Their price is .$85.  That is a markup of 770 times!  I hope that the Honda bolt will make me President of the United States, married to a supermodel with an endless supply of twisty canyons and endless beer for that price!

I recommend putting it in with Red Loctite.

 

Ah, but shipping estimates or even pickup in store for one bolt, Eeek!

You need to buy a few at least for it to be worthwhile. :huh:

Fail  out  when  moving  or  sitting  in  the  driveway ?

Fell out while moving.  There is a Fastenal about 4 miles from my house.  So, even IF I count gas, it is approximately .10 gallons of fuel, so, very little cost and I get to ride my bike.  I suppoe I could buy a few and hold on to them if anyone needs one.  Drop it in a letter and voila.

I replaced one of the mirror mounting bolts with an identical-looking one from Home Depot for 1/4 the price of OEM. But it started rusting almost immediately and I ended up replacing it with the overpriced OEM bolt anyway. While expensive, at least Honda parts are usually decent quality.

Something to keep in mind. I'll see if they have the bolt in stainless and then just paint it black. I just can't justify spending $6.56 on one single bolt. I'm not riding a Harley.

CHECK YOUR SIDE STAND BOLTS!!!!!

When my bolt fell out without my knowledge, the kickstand assembly slid up and crushed the collar that the shifter seal is in, causing an oil leak.  Now, I have to remove all the parts in the way, pull the cover that the seal fits in and get it machined, which means I have to pull the bearing in there as well. 

As you can see from the picture below, this is going to take a small bit of time, plus I have to go buy the part and get all the machining done etc...  The seal is in position 29 and the cover it fits into is position number 3.  And, I have to buy gasket number 4.  Best price I got is from Partzilla if I need to replace the cover with the bearing and seal.  Total is about $90 shipped.  All because of a freaking $6 bolt.

 After two lost bolts and two failed reapplications with Loctite, I went with safety wire.   Cross drilled bolt, corner drilled nut.

I probably didn't clean the bolt hole good enough for Loctite to bond.  But I know the bolt isn't coming out with safety wire.

My bolt cross threaded slightly I think. It was tough putting it in and now it is tight as hell. That couple with Loctite, I don't think it will ever come out on it's own.

I tried taking it out a few times to get the threading right, but it wouldn't have it, it just kept being difficult. Maybe the thread pitch was slightly different, as it isn't a Honda bolt.

Whatever it is, I am going to keep an eye on it, but I really think it is the strongest part of the bike now.

The last couple of threads in the bolt hole probably got damaged as the side stand finally tweaked the bolt out of the hole.  The bolt is a standard pitch.  It would have been best to chase the threads with a tap before strong arming the bolt in.

In retrospect, I completely agree with you. If it falls out again, I'll definitely do that. If it strips, Helicoil and red Loctite...

I know sometimes the Honda parts seem a total rip, however, I have found they are better quality and fit than most alternatives. My strategy has become: find it at the lowest possible price online / phone (Mason City Honda, Partzilla, Ron Ayers, etc...). I then contact my local dealer,

in my case as well as yours Lint, its the Honda shop in Simi. They have always matched or come Very close to the price, within a couple percent. My Honda Stator and Rotor was within $14 of the Partzilla price. It came quickly, no shipping. I do pay the tax, but, I do live in CA, so... They have played ball on all the various bits I have needed over the years. And, no worry on the fit, quality, etc...
